Claims
- 1. For use with a syringe barrel having a female thread at a distal end thereof, a plunger at least partially within the barrel and adapter engagement structure on a distal end portion of the plunger, an adapter comprising:
- an adapter body having a male thread for releasable threaded engagement with the female thread at the distal end of the barrel to releasably secure the adapter and the barrel to one another and enable withdrawal of the adapter body into the barrel;
- said adapter body having a central axial passageway for passing fluid between respective proximal and distal end portions thereof;
- a plunger engagement structure on a proximal end portion of said adapter body for engagement with the adapter engagement structure on the distal end portion of the plunger, said plunger engagement structure including connective and drive surfaces, said connective surfaces including one of a generally radially extending rib or groove for engagement with a generally complementary-shaped groove or rib, respectively, of the adapter engagement structure of the plunger for withdrawing the adapter body into the barrel upon release thereof from the barrel;
- said drive surfaces including a plurality of generally axially extending circumferentially spaced surfaces for engagement by generally complementary-shaped drive surfaces, respectively, of the adapter engagement structure of the plunger and rotating said adapter body relative to the barrel to unscrew the adapter body from the barrel in response to joint rotation of the plunger and adapter body relative to the barrel.
- 2. An adapter according to claim 1 wherein said adapter body includes a seal proximal of the male threads of the adapter body for sealing engagement about the barrel upon securement of the adapter and the barrel to one another.
- 3. An adapter according to claim 1 wherein the distal end of the adapter body carries a tip having an opening for receiving fluid from or supplying fluid to the central passageway.
- 4. An adapter according to claim 1 wherein said adapter body includes a flange proximal of said male threads and extending radially outwardly of said male threads for engaging an end portion of the barrel.
- 5. An adapter according to claim 1 wherein said one radially extending rib or groove comprises a pair of circumferentially spaced fingers flexible in a radial direction to engage with the generally complementary-shaped groove or rib of the adapter engagement structure of the plunger.
- 6. An adapter according to claim 1 wherein said connective surfaces include at least one radially extending rib carried by said adapter body for engagement with a complementary-shaped groove on the adapter engagement structure of the plunger.
- 7. An adapter according to claim 1 wherein said connective surfaces include at least one radially extending groove carried by said adapter body for engagement with a complementary-shaped rib on the adapter engagement structure of the plunger.
- 8. An adapter according to claim 1 wherein said adapter body includes a seal proximal of the male threads of the adapter body for sealing engagement about the barrel upon securement of the adapter and the barrel to one another, the distal end of the adapter body carrying a tip having an opening for receiving fluid from or supplying fluid to the central passageway, said adapter body including a flange proximal of said male threads and extending radially outwardly of said male threads for engaging an end portion of the barrel and said one radially extending rib or groove comprising a pair of circumferentially spaced fingers flexible in a radial direction to engage with the generally complementary-shaped groove or rib of the adapter engagement structure of the plunger.
- 9. A syringe comprising:
- (a) a hollow, axially elongated barrel having a hollow interior;
- (b) an adapter carried by said barrel adjacent a distal end thereof and removable therefrom in response to rotation relative to and about the axis of said barrel, the adapter having a passage for providing fluid communication with the interior of said hollow barrel;
- (c) a plunger axially movable in said barrel between positions axially spaced from said adapter and engaging said adapter, said plunger having first and second opposite ends; and
- (d) adapter engagement structure disposed at said first end of the plunger and engageable with a mating connection engagement structure on the adapter, said structures each having drive and connective engagement surfaces, said drive surfaces of said respective structures being engageable with one another when said plunger engages said adapter and jointly movable to enable rotation of the adapter relative to the barrel in response to relative rotation of the plunger and barrel to cause the adapter to part from the distal end of the barrel, said connective surfaces being engageable with one another to connect the plunger and adapter one with the other and enable said adapter, when parted from the end of the barrel in response to joint rotation of said adapter and said plunger relative to said barrel, to be withdrawn wholly into the interior of the barrel in response to joint axial movement of said plunger and said adapter in a direction away from the distal end of the barrel.
- 10. A syringe according to claim 9 wherein said plunger includes rupturable structure intermediate said first and second ends thereof for detachably connecting said first and second ends relative to one another whereby said second end can be detached from said first end when said adapter is withdrawn into the interior of the barrel.
- 11. A syringe according to claim 9 wherein said second end of said plunger has structure for connecting said plunger second end with structure adjacent the distal end of the barrel, rupturable structure intermediate said first and second ends of said plunger for detachably connecting said first and second ends of said plunger, whereby said second end of said plunger can be detached from said first end when said adapter is withdrawn into the interior of the barrel, leaving said first end in said barrel, said second end being attachable to said structure at the distal end of the barrel.
- 12. A syringe according to claim 9 wherein the drive surfaces of each said structure are spaced circumferentially from one another, an alignment surface carried by said plunger and cooperable with another alignment surface of said syringe to orient said plunger relative to said adapter so that said drive surfaces carried by the plunger lie in circumferential registration with the drive surfaces of said adapter when said plunger is moved into its axially distal-most engaged position relative to said adapter.
- 13. A syringe according to claim 9 wherein the drive surfaces of each said structure are spaced circumferentially from one another, said adapter engagement and connection engagement structures on said plunger and adapter, respectively, including alignment surfaces engageable with one another in response to axial movement of said plunger toward said adapter causing orientation of said plunger and said adapter relative to one another to enable said drive surfaces to lie in circumferential opposition to one another.
- 14. A syringe according to claim 13 wherein said alignment surfaces are inclined to the axis of the barrel and engage one another in response to axial movement of the plunger toward the adapter to cause relative rotation between said plunger and said adapter to bring said drive surfaces into engagement with one another.
- 15. A syringe according to claim 13 wherein said second end of said plunger has structure for connecting said plunger second end with structure adjacent the distal end of the barrel, rupturable structure intermediate said first and second ends of said plunger for detachably connecting said first and second ends of said plunger, whereby said second end of said plunger can be detached from said first end when said adapter is withdrawn into the interior of the barrel, leaving said first end in said barrel, said second end being attachable to said structure at the distal end of the barrel.
- 16. A syringe according to claim 9 wherein said connective surfaces include a radial extending projection carried by one of said plunger and said adapter and a recess carried by another of said plunger and said adapter for receiving said projection.
- 17. A syringe according to claim 9 wherein said connective surfaces include a pair of circumferentially spaced radially extending projections carried by one of said plunger and said adapter and grooves carried by another of said plunger and said adapter for receiving said projections.
- 18. A syringe according to claim 9 wherein said connective surfaces include a radial extending projection carried by one of said plunger and said adapter and a groove carried by another of said plunger and said adapter for receiving said projection in response to relative rotation of said plunger and said adapter.
- 19. A syringe according to claim 9 wherein said connective surfaces include a pair of radial extending projections carried by said plunger and a pair of grooves carried by said adapter for receiving said projections, respectively, in response to relative rotation of said plunger and said adapter.
- 20. A syringe according to claim 9 wherein an alignment surface carried by said plunger and cooperable with another alignment surface of said syringe to orient said plunger relative to said adapter so that said drive surfaces carried by the plunger lie in circumferential registration with the drive surfaces of said adapter when said plunger is moved into its axially distal-most engaged position relative to said adapter, said plunger including rupturable structure intermediate said first and second ends thereof for detachably connecting said first and second ends relative to one another whereby said second end can be detached from said first end when said adapter and needle are withdrawn into the interior of the barrel.
- 21. A syringe comprising:
- (a) a hollow, axially elongated barrel;
- (b) an adapter carried by said barrel adjacent a distal end thereof and removable therefrom in response to rotation relative to said barrel, the adapter having a central passage for providing fluid communication with the interior of said hollow barrel;
- (c) a plunger axially movable in said barrel between positions axially spaced from said adapter and engaging said adapter, said plunger having first and second opposite ends; and
- (d) adapter engagement structure disposed at said first end of the plunger and engageable with a mating connection engagement structure on the adapter, said structures each having drive and connective engagement surfaces, said drive surfaces being engageable with one another when said plunger lies in said adapter engaged position, said drive surfaces being jointly movable to enable rotation of the adapter relative to the barrel in response to relative rotation of the plunger and barrel to cause the adapter to part from the distal end of the barrel, said connective surfaces (i) lying in axial opposition to and engaged with one another when said drive surfaces are engaged with one another to connect the plunger and adapter one with the other and (ii) enabling said adapter, when parted from the end of the barrel in response to joint rotation of said adapter and said plunger relative to said barrel, to be withdrawn into the interior of the barrel in response to joint axial movement of said plunger and said adapter in a direction away from the distal end of the barrel.
- 22. A syringe according to claim 21 wherein said second end of said plunger has structure for connecting said plunger second end with structure at the distal end of the barrel, rupturable structure intermediate said first and second ends of said plunger for detachably connecting said first and second ends of said plunger, whereby said first and second ends of said plunger can be detached from one another when said adapter and needle are withdrawn into the interior of the barrel, leaving said first end in said barrel, said second end being attachable to said structure at the distal end of the barrel.
- 23. A syringe according to claim 21 wherein said adapter engagement and connection engagement structures on said plunger and adapter, respectively, include alignment surfaces inclined to an axis of the barrel and engageable with one another in response to axial movement of said plunger toward said adapter causing relative rotation between said plunger and said adapter.
- 24. A syringe according to claim 23 wherein said second end of said plunger has structure for connecting said plunger second end with structure at the distal end of the barrel, rupturable structure intermediate said first and second ends of said plunger for detachably connecting said first and second ends of said plunger, whereby said first and second ends of said plunger can be detached from one another when said adapter is withdrawn into the interior of the barrel, leaving said first end in said barrel, said second end being attachable to said structure at the distal end of the barrel.
