Claims
- 1. A scanning module for reading indicia having parts of different light reflectivity, said module comprising:
- a) a base;
- b) an oscillatable scanning component for directing a light beam toward the indicia;
- c) an elongated, flexible spring having a fixed end operatively connected to the base, and a movable end operatively connected to the scanning component;
- d) drive means for flexing the spring and oscillating the scanning component about an axis during reading; and
- e) means for resisting over flexing the spring when the module is subjected to shock forces, including an oversized opening located on one of said base and said scanning component, and a pin received with radial clearance in said opening, said pin being located on the other of said base and said scanning component.
- 2. The module according to claim 1, wherein the scanning component includes a reflector, and a support for supporting the reflector.
- 3. The module according to claim 2, wherein the reflector is a generally planar mirror, and wherein the spring lies in a plane generally perpendicular to the mirror in an unflexed condition of the spring.
- 4. The module according to claim 3, wherein the spring has an open central area.
- 5. The module according to claim 2, wherein the support includes first means for fastening said movable end of the spring to the support, and second means for fastening said fixed end of the spring to the base.
- 6. The module according to claim 5, wherein each fastening means includes a pair of fasteners extending through a pair of holes at a respective end of the spring.
- 7. The module according to claim 5, wherein each fastening means includes a clamping plate.
- 8. The module according to claim 2; and further comprising an arm fixed to the base, said oversized opening being formed in and extending through the arm; and wherein the pin is fixedly supported on the support.
- 9. The module according to claim 2; and further comprisng a light source for emitting light along a first path portion to the reflector for reflection therefrom along a second path portion, said first and second path portions being oriented at substantially a right angle.
- 10. The module according to claim 9; and further comprising a detector for detecting light reflected from the indicia, said detector being located adjacent the light source.
- 11. The module according to claim 1; and further comprising a printed circuit board lying in a plane above the base and carrying electrical circuitry for the module.
- 12. The module according to claim 1, wherein the drive means includes a permanent magnet, and an electromagnetic coil to which an alternating drive signal is applied to produce oscillating movement of the scanning component.
- 13. A method of preventing damage to a scanning module for reading indicia having parts of different light reflectivity, said method comprising the steps of:
- a) providing an oscillatable scanning component for directing a light beam toward the indicia;
- b) operatively connecting a fixed end of an elongated, flexible spring to a base, and operatively connecting a movable end of the spring to the scanning component;
- c) flexing the spring and oscillating the scanning component about an axis during reading; and
- d) resisting overflexing the spring when the module is subjected to shock forces, by locating an oversized opening on one of said base and said scanning component, and receiving a pin with radial clearance in said opening, and locating said pin on the other of said base and said scanning component.
- 14. The method according to claim 13, wherein the scanning component includes a reflector, and a support for supporting the reflector.
- 15. The method according to claim 14, wherein the reflector is a generally planar mirror, and wherein the spring lies in a plane generally perpendicular to the mirror in an unflexed condition of the spring.
- 16. The method according to claim 14; and further comprising fastening said movable end of the spring to the support, and fastening said fixed end of the spring to the base.
- 17. The method according to claim 14, and further comprising the step of emitting light along a first path portion to the reflector for reflection therefrom along a second path portion, said first and second path portions being oriented at substantially a right angle.
- 18. The method according to claim 13; and further comprising the step of positioning a printed circuit board lying in a plane above the base and carrying electrical circuitry for the module.
- 19. The method according to claim 13, wherein the oscillating step is performed by a permanent magnet, and an electromagnetic coil to which an alternating drive signal is applied to produce oscillating movement of the scanning component.
