Claims
- 1. An apparatus for separating a mixed granular material into granules of different sizes and specific gravities, comprising:
- a mechanical screening unit for pre-screening said mixed granular material to remove granules outside a predetermined size range;
- an air separation unit for separating said pre-screened granular material into granules of different specific gravities or ranges of specific gravity;
- a first conveyor for conveying said pre-screened granular material from said mechanical screening unit to said air separation unit;
- a diverter for selectively returning said pre-screened granular material to said mechanical screening unit without passing through said air separation unit; and
- a second conveyor for returning pre-screened granular material which has not passed through said air separation unit from said diverter to said mechanical screening unit.
- 2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said diverter is located at an output of said first conveyor and at inputs of said second conveyor and said air separation unit.
- 3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein said diverter comprises a plate movable between a first position in which pre-screened granular material at said output of said first conveyor is passed to said input of said air separation unit, and a second position in which pre-screened granular material at said output of said first conveyor is diverted to said input of said second conveyor without passing through said air separation unit.
- 4. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first and second conveyors comprise powered conveyor belts.
- 5. A method for separating a mixed granular material into granules of different sizes and specific gravities, comprising the steps of:
- pre-screening said mixed granular material in a mechanical screening unit to remove granules outside a predetermined size range;
- recirculating pre-screened granular material through said mechanical screening unit for additional pre-screening; and
- conveying pre-screened granular material from said mechanical screening unit to an air separation unit for separating said pre-screened granular material into granules of different specific gravities or ranges of specific gravity.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 5, wherein said recirculating step is carried out by a mechanical diverter located proximate to said air separation unit.
- 7. A method as claimed in claim 5, wherein said mechanical screening unit and said air separation unit are connected by conveyors operating in opposite directions between said units, and wherein said recirculating step is carried out by transferring pre-screened granular material between said conveyors without passing through said air separation unit.
