Claims
- 1. Apparatus for generating a plurality of teeth of gears, splines or the like spaced about the periphery of a non-rotating workpiece having an axis, said apparatus comprising a head rotatable about an axis which is aligned axially with the axis of said workpiece, a shaping cutter, means on said head for supporting said cutter for rotation about an axis extending substantially parallel to and laterally displaced from the axis of said head and the axis of said workpiece, means for rotating said head about its axis while rotating said cutter about its axis in timed relation with rotation of the head whereby the cutter orbits around said workpiece, means for reciprocating said cutter along its axis through an active cutting stroke and an inactive return stroke, means mounting said cutter on said head for movement of the axis of the cutter laterally toward and away from the axis of the workpiece thereby to enable the lateral displacement between the cutter and workpiece axes to be varied, means for moving the axis of the cutter laterally toward and away from the axis of the workpiece in timed relation with the cutting and return strokes of the cutter so as to cause the cutter to engage the workpiece during said cutting stroke and to clear the workpiece during said return stroke, and means for infeeding the axis of the cutter laterally toward the axis of the workpiece to increase the depth of cut of the cutter into the workpiece.
- 2. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 in which said cutter is mounted on said head to swing about an infeed pivot axis displaced laterally from and extending parallel to the axes of the cutter and the workpiece, said infeeding means being operable to swing said cutter about said infeed pivot axis.
- 3. Apparatus as defined in claim 2 in which said infeed pivot axis is located such that an arc struck from said infeed pivot axis passes through the axis of the cutter and the axis of the workpiece.
- 4. Apparatus for generating a plurality of teeth of gears, splines or the like spaced about the periphery of a non-rotating workpiece having an axis, said apparatus comprising a head rotatable about an axis which is aligned axially with the axis of said workpiece, a shaping cutter, means on said head for supporting said cutter for rotation about an axis extending substantially parallel to and laterally displaced from the axis of said head and the axis of said workpiece, means for rotating said head about its axis while rotating said cutter about its axis in timed relation with rotation of the head whereby the cutter orbits around said workpiece, means for reciprocating said cutter along its axis through an active cutting stroke and an inactive return stroke, means for maintaining said cutter in engagement with the workpiece during the cutting stroke of the cutter and for maintaining the cutter out of engagement with the workpiece during the return stroke of the cutter, means mounting said cutter to swing on said head about an infeed pivot axis displaced laterally from and extending parallel to the axes of the cutter and the workpiece, and means for swinging said cutter about said infeed pivot axis and toward said workpiece thereby to increase the depth of cut of the cutter into the workpiece.
- 5. Apparatus as defined in claim 4 in which said infeed pivot axis is located such that an arc struck from said infeed pivot axis passes through the axis of the cutter and the axis of the workpiece.
- 6. A method of generating a plurality of teeth of gears, splines or the like spaced around the periphery of a non-rotating workpiece having an axis, said method comprising the steps of, rotating a shaping cutter about an axis coinciding with the axis of the cutter and extending substantially parallel to the axis of the workpiece, simultaneously orbiting the cutter about the axis of the workpiece and in timed relation with the rotation of the cutter, shifting the cutter in one direction along its axis through an active cutting stroke as the cutter rotates and orbits and maintaining the cutter in contact with the workpiece during such shifting, shifting the cutter in the opposite direction along its axis through an inactive return stroke as the cutter rotates and orbits and maintaining the cutter out of contact with the workpiece during such shifting, and infeeding the axis of the cutter laterally toward the axis of the workpiece to increase the depth of cut of the cutter into the workpiece.
- 7. A method as defined in claim 6 in which infeeding of the cutter is effected by swinging the cutter about a pivot axis extending parallel to and laterally displaced from the axis of the cutter and the axis of the workpiece, the arc followed by the axis of the cutter during such swinging extending along an arc struck from said pivot axis and passing through the axis of the workpiece.
- 8. A method of generating a plurality of teeth of gears, splines or the like spaced around the periphery of a non-rotating workpiece having an axis, said method comprising the steps of, rotating a shaping cutter about an axis coinciding with the axis of the cutter and extending substantially parallel to the axis of the workpiece, simultaneously orbiting the cutter about the axis of the workpiece and in timed relation with the rotation of the cutter, shifting the cutter in one direction along its axis through an active cutting stroke as the cutter rotates and orbits and maintaining the cutter in contact with the workpiece during such shifting, shifting the cutter in the opposite direction along its axis through an inactive return stroke as the cutter rotates and orbits and maintaining the cutter out of contact with the workpiece during such shifting, and swinging the axis of said cutter laterally toward the axis of said workpiece to infeed the cutter relative to the workpiece and increase the depth of cut of the cutter into the workpiece, said swinging of the cutter axis being effected about a pivot axis extending parallel to and laterally displaced from the axis of the cutter and the axis of the workpiece and being effected along an arc struck from said pivot axis and passing through the axis of the workpiece.
