Claims
- 1. A method of manufacturing a single use processing substrate, the method comprising the steps of:
extruding a first layer having ridges and troughs between the ridges; placing a second layer into the troughs while the first layer is pliant; and compressing the pliant ridges so that the second layer is bound into the troughs.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first layer comprises a sheet of thermoplastic resin.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the thermoplastic resin is selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyesters, polystyrene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, polyacrylonitrile, ABS and ethylvinylacetate.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the second layer comprises an absorbent material.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the absorbent material is selected from the group consisting essentially of non-woven fabrics of synthetic polymers or blends of fibers; laminates of various fabrics or combination of fabrics; cellulosic material(s), meltblown and spunbonded nonwoven fabrics, woven fabrics, multiple layers and combinations of fabrics and papers, absorbent powders like polyacrylic acid polymers, open-celled foams, perforated closed cell foams and/or blends of polymer and cellulosic materials.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of compressing further comprises the step of contacting the first layer and the second layer with a calendaring roll.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first layer comprises a material that is pliant when at a temperature substantially less than a melting point of the material.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of compressing comprises the step of calendaring the first and second layers while the first layer is at least partially molten.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the step of calendaring is undertaken substantially immediately following the step of extruding and before the first layer has substantially cooled below the melting point thereof.
- 10. The method of claim 8, including the further stop of allowing the first layer to cool to a temperature substantially below a melting point of the first layer, and subsequently heating the first layer to at least a temperature that causes the first layer to be pliant when the calendaring step is undertaken.
- 11. An apparatus for production of a single use processing substrate, comprising:
first means for extruding a first layer having ridges and troughs between the ridges; second means for placing a second layer into the troughs while the first layer is pliant; and third means for compressing the pliant ridges so that the second layer is bound into the troughs.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the first layer comprises a sheet of thermoplastic resin.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the thermoplastic resin is selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyesters, polystyrene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, polyacrylonitrile, ABS and ethylvinylacetate.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the second layer comprises an absorbent material.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the absorbent material is selected from the group consisting essentially of non-woven fabrics of synthetic polymers or blends of fibers; laminates of various fabrics or combination of fabrics; cellulosic material(s), meltblown and spunbonded nonwoven fabrics, woven fabrics, multiple layers and combinations of fabrics and papers, absorbent powders like polyacrylic acid polymers, open-celled foams, perforated closed cell foams and/or blends of polymer and cellulosic materials.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the first means comprises an extrusion die.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the compressing means comprises a calendaring roll.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the first layer comprises a material that is pliant when at a temperature substantially less than a melting point of the material.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the compressing means comprises a calendaring roll that contacts the first layer while the first layer is partially molten.
- 20. A sheet material, comprising:
a first cut-resistant layer having a plurality of projections extending away from troughs disposed between the projections; and a second layer of absorbent material disposed in the troughs and captured therein by overhanging portions of the projections.
- 21. The sheet material of claim 20, wherein the first layer comprises a sheet of thermoplastic resin.
- 22. The sheet material of claim 21, wherein the thermoplastic resin is selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyesters, polystyrene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, polyacrylonitrile, ABS and ethylvinylacetate.
- 23. The sheet material of claim 20, wherein the absorbent material is selected from the group consisting essentially of non-woven fabrics of synthetic polymers or blends of fibers; laminates of various fabrics or combination of fabrics; cellulosic material(s), meltblown and spunbonded nonwoven fabrics, woven fabrics, multiple layers and combinations of fabrics and papers, absorbent powders like polyacrylic acid polymers, open-celled foams, perforated closed cell foams and/or blends of polymer and cellulosic materials.
