Claims
- 1. A slurry comprising(a) a dispersing medium and (b) porous inorganic oxide particles wherein the slurry has abrasive properties such that a slurry consisting of water and the inorganic particles having a solids content of 12.6% by weight and pH of about 10.8 removes silica at a rate of at least 120 nm/minute.
- 2. The slurry of claim 1 wherein the inorganic oxide particles have a BET surface area in the range of 40 to 120 m2/g and the removal rate of silica is in the range of 150 to 250 nm/minute.
- 3. The slurry of claim 2 wherein the dispersing medium is water and the inorganic oxide particles comprise silica.
- 4. The slurry of claim 3 wherein the silica comprises silica gel.
- 5. The slurry of claim 3 wherein the inorganic oxide consists essentially of one inorganic oxide.
- 6. The slurry of claim 2 wherein the silica has a pore volume in the range of 0.2 to 0.6 cc/g.
- 7. The slurry of claim 1 wherein the silica has a BET surface area of 60 m2/g or less.
- 8. The slurry of claim 1 wherein the median particle size of the inorganic oxide particles is in the range of 0.1 to about 0.5 microns and substantially all of the particle size distribution is below one micron.
- 9. The slurry of claim 1 wherein the inorganic oxide particles are selected from the group consisting of silica gel, fumed silica, precipitated silica, and alumina.
- 10. The slurry of claim 9 wherein the slurry is prepared by heating silica gel to at least 100° C.
- 11. The slurry of claim 10 wherein the slurry is prepared in an autoclave.
- 12. The slurry of claim 1 wherein the inorganic oxide consists essentially of one inorganic oxide.
