Claims
- 1. A solid state senor for sensing a physical parameter, the sensor comprising:
- a first resonantly vibratable member formed in a substrate and arranged such that its frequency of vibration is dependent upon the parameter to be sensed, the first vibratable member comprising a first beam anchored in the substrate at each end thereof such that the tension therein is affected by the parameter to be sensed; and
- a second resonantly vibratable member which is formed in the substrate adjacent to said first member but which is arranged to be substantially insensitive to the parameter to be sensed, said second member comprising a cantilever beam which is free at one end and which is at right angles to said first member,
- wherein both vibratable members are arranged to be optically excited into vibration via a common optical fibre.
- 2. A sensor as claimed in claim 1, wherein the free end of the second resonantly vibratable member is disposed adjacent the midpoint of the first beam.
- 3. A sensing system for sensing a physical parameter, the system comprising:
- a solid state sensor comprising a first resonantly vibratable member formed in a substrate and arranged such that its frequency of vibration is dependent upon the parameter to be sensed, and a second resonantly vibratable member which is formed in the substrate adjacent to said first member but which is arranged to be substantially insensitive to the parameter to be sensed, said first vibratable member comprising a first beam anchored in said sensor at each end thereof such that the tension therein is affected by the parameter to be sensed, while said second vibratable member comprises a second beam, in the form of a cantilever beam free at one end, said second beam being at right angles to said first beam;
- an optical fibre;
- means for applying an optical input signal to said substrate via the optical fibre, to excite resonant vibration of said first and second vibratable members;
- means for deriving from said first and second vibratable members first and second optical signals respectively each representative of the frequency of vibration of a respective one of said members; and
- means responsive to the optical signals derived from said vibratable members to produce an output signal representative of said parameter and compensated for temperature changes of said vibratable members.
- 4. A sensing system as claimed in claim 3, wherein the free end of the second resonantly vibratable member is disposed adjacent the midpoint of the first beam.
