Claims
- 1. A combination heating and cooling apparatus which comprises:
- a compartment into which an item to be heated or cooled may be placed;
- an electromagnetic wave generator;
- wherein during a first mode of operation of the apparatus, the electromagnetic waves are directed into the compartment to heat the item;
- at least one sorber having a housing defining an enclosure;
- a sorbate/sorbent compound located within the enclosure;
- means for coupling electromagnetic waves generated by the electromagnetic wave generator to the sorber;
- wherein electromagnetic waves transmitted by the electromagnetic wave generator are propagated through the enclosure to desorb the sorbate from the sorbate/sorbent compound;
- a condenser connected to the sorber;
- an evaporator connected to both the condenser and the sorber and positioned in heat exchange relation with the compartment; and
- a controllable valve interposed between the condenser and the evaporator;
- wherein sorbate which is desorbed in the sorber is condensed in the condenser and then, during a second mode of operation of the apparatus, controllably released into the evaporator to create a cooling effect and cool the item, after which the sorbate is drawn back into the sorber.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sorber comprises a hollow outer conductor and an inner conductor coaxial with the outer conductor, the inner and outer conductors being sized and spaced to form a waveguide for the electromagnetic waves.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the inner conductor extends substantially the length of the outer conductor and the sorbent is positioned between the inner and outer conductors.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the coupling means comprises a waveguide connected between the electromagnetic wave generator and the sorber.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein:
- the waveguide comprises a first section positioned adjacent the compartment;
- the compartment comprises a window through which electromagnetic waves may be transmitted from the first section to the compartment; and
- the apparatus further comprises means for selectively directing the electromagnetic waves to either the window or the sorber.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
- a waveguide electrically coupled to the electromagnetic wave generator and having a first section adjacent the compartment;
- the compartment comprising a window through which electromagnetic waves may be transmitted from the first section to the compartment;
- wherein the sorber is positioned in or adjacent the compartment and comprises a portion which is exposed to the compartment;
- wherein the coupling means comprises the waveguide and the compartment; and
- wherein electromagnetic waves are directed through the waveguide, into the compartment and to the sorber to desorb the sorbate from the sorbate/sorbent compound.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein:
- the sorber comprises a hollow outer conductor and an inner conductor;
- the inner conductor comprises a first portion extending coaxially within the outer conductor and a second portion extending from the first portion into the compartment; and
- electromagnetic waves in the compartment are received by the second portion and propagated through the sorber to desorb the sorbate from the sorbate/sorbent compound.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the second portion of the inner conductor is perpendicular to the first portion.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein:
- the sorber comprises a non-metallic housing and an inner conductor located within the housing; and
- electromagnetic waves in the compartment are received by the inner conductor, re-radiated by the inner conductor and propagated through the sorber to desorb the sorbate from the sorbate/sorbent compound.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein:
- the sorber comprises at least one chamber adjacent the compartment and an electromagnetic wave-transparent cover secured over the chamber to form a sealed enclosure;
- electromagnetic waves in the compartment are propagated through the cover and into the sorber to desorb the sorbate from the sorbate/sorbent compound.
- 11. In combination with a microwave oven having a cooking compartment, a magnetron and means for directing the microwaves generated by the magnetron into the cooking compartment, the improvement comprising:
- at least one sorber having a housing forming an enclosure;
- a sorbent located within the enclosure;
- an evaporator in fluid communication with the enclosure and connected in heat exchange relation with the compartment;
- a condenser in fluid communication with both the enclosure and the evaporator;
- wherein during a first portion of a cooling cycle a sorbate is evaporated in the evaporator to cool the compartment and then adsorbed by the sorbent;
- means for coupling microwaves generated by the magnetron to the sorber;
- wherein during a second portion of the cooling cycle the sorbate is desorbed from the sorbent by the microwaves and then condensed in the condenser.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the sorber comprises a hollow outer conductor and an inner conductor coaxial with the outer conductor, the inner and outer conductors being sized and spaced to form a waveguide for the electromagnetic waves.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the inner conductor extends substantially the length of the outer conductor and the sorbent is positioned between the inner and outer conductors.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein:
- the directing means comprises a waveguide electrically coupled to the magnetron;
- the waveguide includes a first section positioned adjacent the compartment;
- the compartment comprises a window through which microwaves may be transmitted from the waveguide to the compartment;
- the waveguide comprises a second portion electrically coupled to the sorber; and
- the coupling means comprises the waveguide.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising:
- means for selectively directing the microwaves to either the window or the sorber.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein:
- the directing means comprises a waveguide electrically coupled to the magnetron;
- the waveguide includes a first section positioned adjacent the compartment;
- the compartment comprises a window through which microwaves may be transmitted from the waveguide to the compartment;
- the sorber is positioned in or adjacent the compartment and comprises a portion which is exposed to the compartment;
- the coupling means comprises the waveguide and the compartment; and
- microwaves are directed through the waveguide, into the compartment and to the sorber to desorb the sorbate from the sorbent.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein:
- the sorber comprises a hollow outer conductor and an inner conductor;
- the inner conductor comprises a first portion extending coaxially within the outer conductor and a second portion extending from the first portion into the compartment; and
- microwaves in the compartment are received by the second portion and propagated through the sorber to desorb the sorbate from the sorbent.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the second portion of the inner conductor is perpendicular to the first portion.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein:
- the sorber comprises a non-metallic housing and an inner conductor located within the housing; and
- microwaves in the compartment are received by the inner conductor, re-radiated by the inner conductor and propagated through the sorber to desorb the sorbate from the sorbent.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein:
- the sorber comprises at least one chamber adjacent the compartment and a microwave-transparent cover secured over the chamber to form a sealed enclosure;
- microwaves in the compartment are propagated through the cover and into the sorber to desorb the sorbate from the sorbent.
- 21. A method of selectively heating or cooling an item comprising the steps of:
- providing a source of electromagnetic energy;
- directing electromagnetic energy from the source to the item to heat the item;
- providing a sorbate;
- providing a sorbent;
- positioning the item in heat exchange relation with a heat exchanger;
- evaporating the sorbate in the heat exchanger to produce a cooling effect and thereby cool the item;
- adsorbing the evaporated sorbate onto the sorbent;
- directing electromagnetic energy from the source to the sorbent to desorb the sorbate from the sorbent;
- condensing the desorbed sorbate.
- 22. An apparatus for selectively heating or cooling an item, the apparatus comprising:
- means for generating electromagnetic waves;
- means for directing the electromagnetic waves to the item to heat the item during a first mode of operation of the apparatus;
- means positioned in heat exchange relation with the item for evaporating a sorbate to produce a cooling effect and thereby cool the item during a second mode of operation of the apparatus;
- a sorber containing a sorbent on which the evaporated sorbate is adsorbed;
- means for coupling the electromagnetic waves to the sorber to desorb the sorbate from the sorbent;
- means for condensing the sorbate which has been desorbed from the sorbent.
