Claims
- 1. A method for cross-matching a platelet-containing fluid sample comprising the steps of:
obtaining a sample of plasma from a patient; mixing the plasma sample with a sample of intact platelet-containing fluid; collecting a transmission spectrum of the plasma sample—intact platelet-containing fluid sample mixture over a predetermined wavelength range comprising at least a portion of the ultraviolet-visible spectrum; determining a particle size distribution from the transmission spectrum; determining an aggregation state from the particle size distribution; and determining platelet compatibility from the aggregation state.
- 2. The method recited in claim 1, wherein the predetermined wavelength range comprises 200-1000 nm.
- 3. The method recited in claim 1, wherein the particle size determining step comprises utilizing Mie scattering theory.
- 4. The method recited in claim 1, wherein the mixing step further comprises adding a low-ionic-strength enhancing medium and incubating the mixture for a predetermined time to enhance aggregation.
- 5. The method recited in claim 1, wherein the aggregation state determining step comprises the step of plotting an optical density spectrum from the transmission spectrum against an optical density spectrum of a control sample.
- 6. The method recited in claim 5, wherein the platelet compatibility determining step comprises the step of comparing the optical density specimen spectrum with the control optical density spectrum.
- 7. An apparatus for cross-matching a platelet-containing fluid sample comprising:
a vessel for mixing a plasma sample from a patient with a platelet-containing fluid sample; a spectrophotometer for collecting a transmission spectrum of the plasma sample—platelet-containing fluid sample mixture over a predetermined wavelength range comprising at least a portion of the ultraviolet-visible spectrum; means for determining a particle size distribution from the transmission spectrum; means for determining an aggregation state from the particle size distribution; and means for determining platelet compatibility from the aggregation state.
- 8. The apparatus recited in claim 7, wherein the means for determining a particle size distribution from the transmission spectrum comprises software means including an algorithm implementing Mie scattering theory.
- 9. The apparatus recited in claim 7, further comprising means for plotting an optical density spectrum from the transmission spectrum, for determining aggregation state and platelet compatibility therefrom.
