Claims
- 1. A method of coating a substrate comprising spraying the substrate with a coating composition containing a binder comprised of an epoxy resin-modified polyester produced by the reaction of:
- (A) a polyester having a number average molecular weight of less than 2000, an acid number of 35 to 240 and an OH number of 56 to 320, which is comprised of the reaction product of:
- (a.sub.1) a polycarboxylic acid containing at least 3 carboxyl groups, or a reactive derivative thereof;
- (a.sub.2) a polyol containing at least one carboxyl group other then components (a.sub.1), (a.sub.3) and (a.sub.4); and
- (a.sub.3) a polycarboxylic acid containing two carboxylic groups or a reactive derivative thereof other than component (a.sub.2); and
- (a.sub.4) a polyol other than component (a.sub.2),
- such that at least 10 mol % of the sum of (a.sub.1), (a.sub.2), (a.sub.3) and (a.sub.4) contains a (cyclo)aliphatic structural element having at least six carbon atoms, and wherein the (a.sub.1) and (a.sub.3) components are co-condensed via at least two carboxyl groups, and
- (B) a bisphenol based epoxy resin having an epoxide equivalent weight of 170 to 1000 and from 0.3 to 1.5 epoxide equivalents per polyester molecule,
- said polyester (A) and epoxy resin (B) reacting under conditions such that essentially only carboxyl groups react with epoxide groups to produce an epoxy resin-modified polyester which is water-dilutable upon at least partial neutralization of the free carboxyl groups with base.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the spraying is conducted electrostatically.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the polyester (A) is reacted with 0.5-1.0 equivalents of epoxy resin (B) per polyester molecule.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the polyester component (a.sub.1) and (a.sub.3) is a dimeric fatty acid.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the polyester (A) is reacted with an epoxy resin (B) based on bisphenol A and a (cyclo)aliphatic monocarboxylic or polycarboxylic acid having at least 6 carbon atoms in the (cyclo)aliphatic group.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the carboxyl groups of the polyester (A) are reacted with the epoxide groups of the epoxide resin (B) at a temperature of 25.degree. to 180.degree. C.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein at least partial neutralization of free carboxyl groups is conducted utilizing at least one base selected from the group consisting of ammonia, diisopropanolamine, dimethylaminoethanol, diethylaminoethanol, trimethylamine, triethylamine and tripropylamine.
