Claims
- 1. A magnetic recording tape drive comprising:
a read/write head; and means for guiding tape past the read/write head.
- 2. A magnetic recording tape drive comprising:
a magnetic read/write head; and a stationary guide for guiding tape past the magnetic read/write head, the stationary guide having: a mounting portion and a separate guide surface portion mounted on the mounting portion; and a spring arrangement mounted directly on the mounting portion to apply pressure to a top edge of the tape during guiding of the tape.
- 3. The drive of claim 2, wherein the guide surface portion is composed of a wear-resistant material.
- 4. The drive of claim 3, wherein the wear-resistant material is a ceramic.
- 5. The drive of claim 4, wherein the mounting portion comprises a molded plastic.
- 6. The drive of claim 5, wherein the mounting portion has molded spring mounting elements, the spring arrangement having mating spring seating elements that mate with the spring mounting elements to mount to the spring arrangement on the mounting portion.
- 7. The drive of claim 6, wherein the mounting portion has guide surface portion mounting elements, the guide surface portion having mating elements that mate with the guide surface portion mounting elements to mount the guide surface portion to the mounting portion.
- 8. The drive of claim 7, wherein the spring arrangement includes two spring beams, each spring beam supporting a pad finger configured to bear against the top of the tape during guiding of the tape.
- 9. The drive of claim 8, wherein the spring arrangement further includes a connecting notch between the two spring beams that connects the spring beams.
- 10. The drive of claim 9, further comprising a damping disk on each of the spring beams.
- 11. The drive of claim 10, wherein the mounting portion has an inclined seat configured to receive and seat the spring arrangement to incline the spring arrangement at a non-perpendicular angle with respect to the tape during guiding of the tape.
- 12. A stationary tape guide for a tape drive, comprising:
a mounting portion made of a first material; a guide surface portion made of a second material different from the first material and mounted to the mounting portion, the guide surface portion including a tape guide surface; and a spring arrangement mounted directly on the mounting portion to apply pressure to a top edge of the tape during guiding of the tape.
- 13. The tape guide of claim 12, wherein the first material is a molded plastic, and includes integral mounting elements that mate with mounting elements of the spring arrangement and mounting elements of the guide surface portion to respectively mount the spring arrangement and the guide surface portion.
- 14. The tape guide of claim 13, wherein the spring arrangement includes first and second spring beams, each spring beam having a pad finger mounted on an undersurface thereof, and a connecting notch between the first and second spring beams to connect the first and second spring beams to provide a synchronous mode of biasing by the pad fingers against the tape.
- 15. The tape guide of claim 14, wherein the spring arrangement further includes: a third beam parallel to and connected to the first and second spring beams at the ends of the first and second spring beams; and
damping disks mounted on an upper surface at the ends of the first and second spring beams.
- 16. The tape guide of claim 15, wherein the guide surface portion includes an inclined seat from which the integral mounting elements extend, and the spring arrangement includes a plate section with apertures therein, forming part of the third beam, the plate section resting on the inclined seat and the integral mounting elements extending through the apertures when the guide surface portion and the spring arrangement are in an assembled position.
- 17. The tape guide of claim 16, wherein the second material is a ceramic.
- 18. The tape guide of claim 17, wherein the first and second spring beams have a spring rate of between 25-150 g/in.
- 19. The tape guide of claim 12, wherein the spring arrangement has two spring mounted pad fingers biased against the top edge of the tape during guiding of the tape, the pad fingers being coupled to operate synchronously.
- 20. The tape guide of claim 19, wherein the first material is a plastic and the second material is a ceramic.
