Claims
- 1. The method of making an annular, axially extending stent for insertion into a tubular body structure to radially support the tubular body structure, said method comprising the steps of:
- forming a first annular axial portion and a second annular axial portion of said stent so that said first portion is circumferentially strong relative to said second portion, said second portion being axially spaced from said first portion;
- wherein said first portion is formed as an axially medial portion of said stent, and wherein said second portion is formed as an axially end portion of said stent.
- 2. The method defined in claim 1 further comprising the step of:
- forming a third annular axial portion of said stent so that said third portion is circumferentially weak relative to said first portion, said third portion being an axially end portion which is axially remote from said second portion.
- 3. The method defined in claim 1 wherein said forming steps include the step of:
- forming said first portion so that it is circumferentially elastically stronger than said second portion.
- 4. The method defined in claim 1 wherein said forming steps include the step of:
- forming said first portion so that it is circumferentially plastically stronger than said second portion.
- 5. The method defined in claim 1 wherein said forming steps include the step of:
- employing for said second portion a material that is weaker than a material from which said first portion is formed.
- 6. The method defined in claim 5 wherein said employing step comprises the step of:
- producing said second portion from a material that has a lower modulus of elasticity than the material from which said first portion is formed.
- 7. The method defined in claim 5 wherein said employing step comprises the step of:
- producing said second portion from a material that has a lower yield strength than the material from which said first portion is formed.
- 8. The method defined in claim 7 wherein the material of said first and second portions is metal, and wherein said producing step comprises the step of:
- annealing said second portion to a greater degree than said first portion is annealed.
- 9. The method defined in claim 7 wherein the material of said first and second portions is precipitation hardening material, and wherein said producing step comprises the step of:
- precipitation hardening said first portion to a greater degree than said second portion is precipitation hardened.
- 10. The method defined in claim 1 wherein said forming steps include the step of:
- employing for said second portion a member having a smaller cross section than a member from which said first portion is formed.
- 11. The method defined in claim 1 wherein said forming steps include the step of:
- employing for said second portion members that are longer between connections to other members than members from which said first portion is formed.
- 12. The method of making an annular, axially extending stent for insertion into a tubular body structure, said method comprising the steps of:
- forming a first annular axial portion and a second annular axial portion of said stent so that said first portion has a low yield strength relative to said second portion; said second portion being axially spaced from said first portion;
- wherein said first portion is formed as an axially medial portion of said stent, and wherein said second portion is formed as an axial end portion of said stent.
- 13. The method defined in claim 12 further comprising the step of:
- forming a third annular axial portion of said stent so that said third portion has high yield strength relative to said first portion, said third portion being an axial end portion which is axially remote from said second portion.
- 14. The method defined in claim 12 wherein said first and second portions are formed from metal, and wherein said forming steps include the step of:
- annealing said first portion to a greater degree than said second portion is annealed.
- 15. The method defined in claim 12 wherein said first and second portions are formed from precipitation hardening material, and wherein said forming steps include the step of:
- precipitation hardening said second portion to a greater degree than said first portion is precipitation hardened.
