Claims
- 1. A composition of matter comprising:
- (i) a solid sulfonimide cure catalyst, and
- (iii) a solid polyfunctional material capable of reacting with an aminoplast crosslinking agent,
- wherein the solid sulfonimide cure catalyst is selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) a sulfonimide represented by the formula
- RSO.sub.2 NZSO.sub.2 R
- wherein each of the R groups is, independently, selected from the group consisting of
- (a1) a linear, branched or cyclic alkyl, fluoroalkyl or N,N-dialkylamino group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof,
- (a2) an aryl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms containing 5 or less aromatic or heterocyclic aromatic rings substituted by R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 groups, wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 groups are the same or different groups selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluoro, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aryl, haloaryl, carboxy, mercapto, vinyl, chloro, bromo, cyano, nitro, sulfonyl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxy, perfluoroalkoxy, hydroxy, amino, acylamino, alkoxycarbonylamino, carbamoyl, aminocarbonyl, N-alkyl aminocarbonyl and N,N-dialkyl aminocarbonyl groups, and
- (a3) an aralkyl group wherein the alkyl and the aryl groups have the same meaning as the alkyl and aryl groups (a1) and (a2), and
- wherein the Z group is
- (a4) hydrogen,
- (a5) acyl or
- (a6) an alkyl or aralkyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms;
- (b) a sulfonimide represented by the formula
- --(R'--SO.sub.2 NH--SO.sub.2)--.sub.n
- wherein n groups of the --(R'--SO.sub.2 NH--SO.sub.2)--units may be the same or different, and the R' group in each of the n units is independently selected from the group consisting of
- (b1) a linear, branched or cyclic alkylene or fluoroalkylene group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms,
- (b2) an arylene group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms containing 5 or less carbocyclic or heterocyclic aromatic rings substituted by R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 groups, wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 groups are the same or different groups selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluoro, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aryl, haloaryl, carboxy, mercapto, vinyl, chloro, bromo, cyano, nitro, sulfonyl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxy, perfluoroalkoxy, hydroxy, amino, acylamino, alkoxycarbonylamino, carbamoyl, aminocarbonyl, N-alkyl aminocarbonyl and N,N-dialkyl aminocarbonyl groups, and
- (b3) an aralkylene group wherein the alkylene and the arylene groups have the same meaning as the alkylene and arylene groups (b1) and (b2);
- (c) a sulfonimide represented by the formula
- P--(SO.sub.2 NHSO.sub.2 R").sub.n
- wherein P is a polyfunctional group or a polymer of a number average molecular weight greater than 500, R" is an alkyl or aryl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and n is 2 or greater; and
- (d) a latent reactive form thereof.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the solid sulfonimide catalyst (i) is represented by the formula
- RSO.sub.2 NZSO.sub.2 R
- wherein each of the R groups is, independently, selected from the group consisting of:
- (a1) a linear, branched, or cyclic alkyl, fluoroalkyl, or N,N-dialkylamino group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof;
- (a2) an aryl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms containing 5 or less aromatic or heterocyclic aromatic rings substituted by R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, and R.sup.5 groups wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, and R.sup.5 groups are the same or different groups selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluoro, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aryl, haloaryl, carboxyl, mercapto, vinyl, chloro, bromo, cyano, nitro, sulfonyl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxy, perfluoroalkoxy, hydroxy, amino, acylamino, alkoxycarbonylamino, carbamoyl, aminocarbonyl, N-alkylaminocarbonyl and N,N-dialkyl aminocarbonyl groups; and
- (a3) an aralkyl group wherein the alkyl and the aryl groups have the same meaning as the alkyl and aryl groups as in (a1) and (a2) above; and
- wherein the Z group is selected from a group consisting of:
- (a4) hydrogen;
- (a5) acyl; and
- (a6) an alkyl group or an aralkyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the reactive group of the polyfunctional aminoplast reactive material (iii) is selected from the group consisting of carboxy, hydroxy, carbamate, amino, amido, mercapto and mixtures thereof.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein the solid polyfunctional material (iii) is a polyfunctional hydroxy reactant material selected from the group consisting of epoxy or polyurethane prepolymers, alkyds, acrylic resins containing pendant or terminal carboxy or hydroxy functionalities, or polyester resins with pendant or terminal hydroxy or carboxy functionalities.
- 5. The composition of claim 2 wherein the solid polyfunctional material (iii) is a polyfunctional hydroxy reactant material selected from the group consisting of epoxy or polyurethane prepolymers, alkyds, acrylic resins containing pendant or terminal carboxy or hydroxy functionalities, or polyester resins with pendant or terminal hydroxy or carboxy functionalities.
- 6. The composition of claim 5 wherein the sulfonimide cure catalyst is represented by the formula: ##STR28## wherein X is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chloro, methyl, alkyl, nitro, amino, cyano, alkoxycarbonyl, carboxyl, acyl, N-alkylamino, carbonyl, and N,N-dialkylaminocarbonyl groups.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 wherein the sulfonimide cure catalyst is represented by the formula: ##STR29##
- 8. The composition of claim 6 wherein the sulfonimide cure catalyst is represented by the formula: ##STR30##
- 9. The composition of claim 6 wherein the sulfonimide cure catalyst is represented by the formula: ##STR31##
- 10. The composition of claim 5 wherein the sulfonimide cure catalyst is represented by the formula: ##STR32##
- 11. The composition of claim 5 wherein the weight ratio of the sulfonimide cure catalyst (i) to the polyfunctional material (iii) is about 3:1 to about 1:20.
- 12. The composition of claim 5 wherein the polyfunctional material (iii) has a number average molecular weight between from about 100 to about 50,000.
- 13. The composition of claim 5 wherein the polyfunctional material (iii) is selected from a carboxy functional polyester resin and a carboxy functional acrylic resin.
- 14. The composition of claim 5 wherein the polyfunctional material (iii) is selected from a hydroxy functional polyester resin and a hydroxy functional acrylic resin.
- 15. A process for the preparation of a solid cure catalyst/polyfunctional material combination comprising the steps of:
- (1) heating a mixture of (i) a solid sulfonimide cure catalyst and (iii) a solid polyfunctional material capable of reacting with an aminoplast crosslinking agent, at a temperature sufficient to produce a uniform melt-mixed resinous material;
- (2) cooling said melt-mixed resinous material to a temperature sufficient to produce a solid; and
- (3) crushing the solid to produce a powdered sulfonimide cure catalyst/polyfunctional material combination,
- wherein the solid sulfonimide cure catalyst is selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) a sulfonimide represented by the formula
- RSO.sub.2 NZSO.sub.2 R
- wherein each of the R groups is, independently, selected from the group consisting of
- (a1) a linear, branched or cyclic alkyl, fluoroalkyl or N,N-dialkylamino group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof,
- (a2) an aryl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms containing 5 or less aromatic or heterocyclic aromatic rings substituted by R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 groups, wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 groups are the same or different groups selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluoro, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aryl, haloaryl, carboxy, mercapto, vinyl, chloro, bromo, cyano, nitro, sulfonyl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxy, perfluoroalkoxy, hydroxy, amino, acylamino, alkoxycarbonylamino, carbamoyl, aminocarbonyl, N-alkyl aminocarbonyl and N,N-dialkyl aminocarbonyl groups, and
- (a3) an aralkyl group wherein the alkyl and the aryl groups have the same meaning as the alkyl and aryl groups (a1) and (a2), and
- wherein the Z group is
- (a4) hydrogen,
- (a5) acyl or
- (a6) an alkyl or aralkyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms;
- (b) a sulfonimide represented by the formula
- --(R'--SO.sub.2 NH--SO.sub.2)--.sub.n
- wherein n groups of the --(R'--SO.sub.2 NH--SO.sub.2)-- units may be the same or different, and the R' group in each of the n units is independently selected from the group consisting of
- (b1) a linear, branched or cyclic alkylene or fluoroalkylene group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms,
- (b2) an arylene group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms containing 5 or less carbocyclic or heterocyclic aromatic rings substituted by R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 groups, wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 groups are the same or different groups selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluoro, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aryl, haloaryl, carboxy, mercapto, vinyl, chloro, bromo, cyano, nitro, sulfonyl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxy, perfluoroalkoxy, hydroxy, amino, acylamino, alkoxycarbonylamino, carbamoyl, aminocarbonyl, N-alkyl aminocarbonyl and N,N-dialkyl aminocarbonyl groups, and
- (b3) an aralkylene group wherein the alkylene and the arylene groups have the same meaning as the alkylene and arylene groups (b1) and (b2);
- (c) a sulfonimide represented by the formula
- P--(SO.sub.2 NHSO.sub.2 R").sub.n
- wherein P is a polyfunctional group or a polymer of a number average molecular weight greater than 500, R" is an alkyl or aryl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and n is 2 or greater; and
- (d) a latent reactive form thereof.
- 16. The process of claim 15 wherein the solid sulfonimide catalyst (i) is represented by the formula
- RSO.sub.2 NZSO.sub.2 R
- wherein each of the R groups is, independently, selected from the group consisting of:
- (a1) a linear, branched, or cyclic alkyl, fluoroalkyl, or N,N-dialkylamino group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof;
- (a2) an aryl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms containing 5 or less aromatic or heterocyclic aromatic rings substituted by R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, and R.sup.5 groups wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, and R.sup.5 groups are the same or different groups selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, fluoro, alkyl, fluoroalkyl, aryl, haloaryl, carboxyl, mercapto, vinyl, chloro, bromo, cyano, nitro, sulfonyl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkoxy, perfluoroalkoxy, hydroxy, amino, acylamino, alkoxycarbonylamino, carbamoyl, aminocarbonyl, N-alkylaminocarbonyl and N,N-dialkyl aminocarbonyl groups; and
- (a3) an aralkyl group wherein the alkyl and the aryl groups have the same meaning as the alkyl and aryl groups as in (a1) and (a2) above; and
- wherein the Z group is selected from a group consisting of:
- (a4) hydrogen;
- (a5) acyl; and
- (a6) an alkyl group or an aralkyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
- 17. The process of claim 15 wherein the solid polyfunctional material (iii) is a polyfunctional hydroxy reactant material selected from the group consisting of epoxy or polyurethane prepolymers, alkyds, acrylic resins containing pendant or terminal carboxy or hydroxy functionalities, or polyester resins with pendant or terminal hydroxy or carboxy functionalities.
- 18. The process of claim 15 wherein the weight ratio of the sulfonimide cure catalyst (i) to the polyfunctional material (iii) is about 3:1 to about 1:20.
- 19. The composition of claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of the sulfonimide cure catalyst (i) to the polyfunctional material is from about 1:10,000 to about 9:1.
- 20. The composition of claim 19 wherein the weight ratio of the sulfonimide cure catalyst (i) to the polyfunctional material (iii) is from about 1:10,000 to about 9:1.
- 21. The composition of claim 2 wherein the solid sulfonimide cure catalyst is represented by the formula: ##STR33## wherein X is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chloro, methyl, nitro, amino, cyano, alkoxycarbonyl, carboxyl, acyl, N-alkylaminocarbonyl, and N,N-dialkylaminocarbonyl groups.
- 22. The composition of claim 21 wherein the solid sulfonimide cure catalyst is represented by the formula: ##STR34##
- 23. The composition of claim 21 wherein the solid sulfonimide cure catalyst is represented by the formula: ##STR35##
- 24. The composition of claim 21 wherein the solid sulfonimide cure catalyst is represented by the formula: ##STR36##
- 25. The composition of claim 3 wherein the polyfunctional material (iii) has a number average molecular weight between from about 100 to about 50,000.
- 26. The composition of claim 4 wherein the polyfunctional material is selected from a carboxy terminated polyester and a carboxy functional acrylic resin.
- 27. The composition of claim 4 wherein the polyfunctional material is a hydroxy functional acrylic resin or a hydroxy functional polyester resins.
- 28. The process of claim 15 wherein the temperature of the melt is from about 50.degree. to 200.degree. C.
- 29. The process of claim 15 wherein the cooling temperature of the melt-mixed material is in the range from about -20.degree. C. to about 50.degree. C.
