Claims
- 1. A method for treating the surface of a metal substrate, comprising the steps of:
providing a substrate; exposing the substrate to an acid, thereby forming a first treated substrate; and exposing the first treated substrate to an alkaline perborate solution, thereby forming a second treated substrate.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the acid is a protic acid.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the acid is sulfuric acid.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the perborate solution comprises sodium perborate.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the alkaline perborate solution comprises NaOH.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of degreasing the substrate prior to applying the acid to the substrate.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is a metal substrate.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises titanium.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is a Ti-6-4 alloy.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the alloy is shiny Ti-6-4 alloy.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the alloy is dark Ti-6-4 alloy.
- 12. The method of claim 1, wherein the metal comprises aluminum.
- 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises 2024-T3 aluminum alloy.
- 14. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises stainless steel.
- 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is PH17-7 stainless steel.
- 16. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is copper.
- 17. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is glass.
- 18. The method of claim 1, wherein the substrate is a silicon wafer.
- 19. The method of claim 1, wherein the first treated substrate is subjected to ultrasonic washing with water prior to application of the base.
- 20. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of applying a sol-gel coating to said second treated substrate.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein said sol-gel coating comprises a phenylethynyl containing amide acid.
- 22. The method of claim 20, wherein said sol-gel coating comprises a phenylethynyl imide silane.
- 23. The method of claim 20, wherein said sol-gel coating comprises an imide silane having a pendant phenylethynyl group.
- 24. The method of claim 20, wherein said sol-gel coating comprises tetraethoxysilane.
- 25. The method of claim 1, wherein the first treated substrate is exposed to the perborate solution for at least 10 minutes.
- 26. The method of claim 1, wherein the first treated substrate is exposed to the perborate solution for at least 30 minutes.
- 27. The method of claim 1, wherein the first treated substrate is exposed to the perborate solution at room temperature.
- 28. The method of claim 1, wherein the first treated substrate is exposed to the perborate solution at a temperature of at least 40° C.
- 29. The method of claim 1, wherein the first treated substrate is exposed to the perborate solution at a temperature of at least 60° C.
- 30. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of applying a primer to the second treated substrate.
- 31. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of applying an adhesive to the second treated substrate.
- 32. A method for treating the surface of a metal substrate, comprising the steps of providing a metal substrate;
etching at least a portion of the surface of the substrate with an acid, thereby forming a first treated surface; oxidizing the first treated surface with an alkaline perborate solution, thereby forming a second treated surface; and applying a sol-gel coating to the second treated surface.
- 33. The method of claim 32, wherein the oxidizing agent is an alkaline perborate solution.
- 34. A method for treating the surface of a metal substrate, comprising the steps of:
providing a metal substrate comprising a titanium alloy; etching a surface of the substrate with sulfuric acid, thereby forming a first treated surface; and oxidizing the first treated surface by exposing the first treated surface to an alkaline perborate solution, thereby forming a second treated surface.
- 35. The method of claim 34, wherein the first treated surface is exposed to an alkaline perborate solution at a temperature of at least 30° C. for at least about 30 minutes.
- 36. The method of claim 34, wherein the first treated surface is exposed to an alkaline perborate solution at a temperature of at least 60° C. for at least about 1 hour.
