Claims
- 1. In a vehicle propulsion system including a hydraulic drive unit for transmitting vehicle drive torque and having a variable displacement pump with a positionable swashplate for controlling the operation of the hydraulic drive unit and a fixed displacement motor connected in closed circuit to the variable displacement pump, a neutral return device comprising:
- a centering mechanism adjacent the swashplate for controlling the orientation thereof in the absence of a swashplate positioning force, the centering mechanism including
- a) a cam follower arm on the swashplate and having an end-mounted roller,
- b) a rotatable cam mounted adjacent the swashplate and having a notch adapted to receive the roller of the cam follower arm, and
- c) a spring connected between the pump and the rotatable cam for biasing the swashplate toward a centered position.
- 2. The vehicle propulsion system defined in claim 1 in which the swash plate centering assembly includes adjustment means for prescribing the position of the swashplate corresponding to the neutral position.
- 3. The vehicle propulsion system defined in claim 1 wherein the notch is V-shaped and includes an apex, the spring biasing the roller to the apex of the notch wherein the swashplate is in the centered position.
- 4. A drive arrangement for a vehicle propulsion system operative for transmitting vehicle drive torque and for independently driving external implements including a hydraulic drive unit, comprising:
- a power input shaft driven by a prime mover;
- a variable displacement pump having a pump shaft driven by the power input shaft and a positionable swashplate for controlling the operation of the hydraulic drive unit, the swashplate having a neutral position representative of the absence of swashplate positioning forces;
- a spring biased centering mechanism adjacent the swash plate for controlling the orientation of the swashplate, the centering mechanism being operative to move the swashplate toward the neutral position in the absence of a swashplate positioning force;
- adjustment means for prescribing the position of the swashplate corresponding to the neutral position; and
- a fixed displacement motor connected in closed circuit to the variable displacement pump and having a motor output shaft.
- 5. The drive arrangement of claim 4 in which the neutral position adjustment means comprises a mounting means whereby the centering assembly is mounted on the variably displacement pump to accurately prescribe a swashplate position corresponding to neutral pump operation.
- 6. The drive arrangement of claim 4 in which the swashplate centering mechanism includes a cam follower arm on the swashplate and having an end-mounted roller, a rotatable cam mounted adjacent the swashplate and having a notch adapted to receive the roller of the cam follower arm, and a spring connected between the pump and the rotatable cam for biasing the cam toward a position in which the roller is forced into the bottom of the notch and the follower arm thereby is rotated to a position in which the swashplate is forced into a centered position.
- 7. The drive arrangement of claim 6 in which the adjustment means comprises a plurality of openings peripherally spaced about the mechanism for loosely receiving a plurality of threaded fasteners when the centering mechanism is installed, and whereby after the centering assembly has sought a centered equilibrium position the threaded fasteners are firmly tightened.
