Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula:
- wherein R is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, cycloalkyl, heteroalkyl, aralkyl, a heteropolynuclear aralkyl group or an aryl group; Z is an enzyme-cleavable moiety selected from the group consisting of an acetate ester, phosophoryloxy, oxacarboxylate, 1-phoso-2,3-diacylglyceride, D-xyloside, D-fucoside, 1-thio-D-glucoside, adenosine triphosphate, adenosine diphosphate, adenosine monophosphate, adenosine, .alpha.-D-galactoside, .beta.-D-galactoside, .alpha.-D-glucoside, .beta.-D-glucoside, .alpha.-D-mannoside, .beta.-D-mannoside, .beta.-D-fructofuranoside, .beta.-D-glucosiduronate, p-toluenesulfonyl-L-arginine ester and p-toluenesulfonyl-L-arginine amide; and Y is a chromophor moiety, selected from the group consisting of phenylene, naphthalene, anthracene, rhodamine, fluorescein, eosin, coumarin, erythrosin, benzheteroazole, pyrene, stilbene, nitrobenzoxadiazole, quinolin, acridine, acidoacridine, carbazole, flourescent cyanines, carbocyanine, pyridinium salts, oxnol and resorofins.
- 2. The compound of claim 1, wherein Z is selected from the consisting of acetate ester, phosophorolxy, D-galactoside and D-glucosiduronate moieties, R is a branched or unbranched alkyl substituted with at least one substituent which enhances the water solubility of the compound, selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid moieties, sulfonic acid moieties and quartenary amino salts, and wherein R bears an electron withdrawing group selected from the group consisting of fluoro, chloro, cyano, nitro and trifluoromethyl.
- 3. The compound of claim 1, wherein Y is phenylene, Z is phosphoryloxy, R is an ethyl moiety, wherein said ethyl moiety bears a fluoro substituent, and two substituents which enhance the water solubility of the 1,2-dioxetane selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid and quarternary amino salts.
- 4. The compound of claim 3, wherein said compound has the formula: ##STR47## wherein M is selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal, ammonium, quarternary ammonium ion and polymeric quarternary ammonium ion.
- 5. A compound of claim 1, wherein Y is phenylene, Z is phosphoryloxy, R is a propyl moiety, wherein said propyl moiety bears a fluoro substituent, and two substituents which enhance the water solubility of the 1,2-dioxetane selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid, sulphonic acid and quaternary amino salts.
- 6. The compound of claim 5, wherein said compound has the formula ##STR48## wherein each M is, independently, selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal, ammonium, quaternary ammonium ion and polymeric quaternary ammonium ion.
