Claims
- 1. A system for preparing an extrusion head for a coating operation, the system comprising:means for cleaning the extrusion head, wherein the means for cleaning comprises means for rinsing the extrusion head and means for scrubbing the extrusion head; means for priming the extrusion head; and means for disposing the means for cleaning and means for priming within a small footprint and convenient to a coating apparatus to permit rapid preparation of the extrusion head between coating operations.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the system for preparing is disposed within the coating apparatus.
- 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the system for preparing is disposed on a cart which is removably attachable to said coating apparatus.
- 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the means for scrubbing comprises means for cleaning the extrusion head employing physical contact between at least one scrubbing instrument and said extrusion head.
- 5. The system of claim 4, wherein said means for scrubbing comprises means for rotating at least one brush against a surface to be cleaned on said extrusion head.
- 6. The system of claim 5, further comprising means for cleaning said at least one brush.
- 7. The system of claim 5, wherein said means for scrubbing further comprises:a solvent pool; and means for directing solvent toward an area of contact between said at least one brush and said extrusion head.
- 8. The system of claim 7, wherein the means for directing solvent includes means for heating the solvent.
- 9. The system of claim 5, wherein said at least one brush comprises two brushes.
- 10. The system of claim 1, wherein the means for rinsing is a rinsing station comprising:a fluid reservoir containing rinsing fluid; and means for directing said fluid toward the extrusion head.
- 11. The system of claim 10, further comprising means for heating the rinsing fluid before said fluid contacts the extrusion head.
- 12. The system of claim 10, further comprising means for ultrasonically agitating the rinsing fluid while said fluid is in contact with the extrusion head.
- 13. The system of claim 10, wherein the rinsing station further comprises a groove wherein the extrusion head resides during rinsing to permit recapture of rinsing solvent.
- 14. The system of claim 10, wherein the means for directing said rinsing fluid comprises a fluid flow structure leading fluid from said fluid reservoir to said extrusion head.
- 15. The system of claim 14, wherein the fluid flow structure comprises:vertical grooves disposed above and in communication with the fluid reservoir; and a slot in communication with the vertical grooves leading fluid to the extrusion head.
- 16. The system of claim 14, wherein the fluid flow structure comprises sintered material disposed between the fluid reservoir and the extrusion head for generating a curtain of rinsing fluid flow to said extrusion head.
- 17. The system of claim 10, where the means for directing fluid comprises a pump.
- 18. The system of claim 10, wherein the rinsing fluid is self-drying.
- 19. The system of claim 14, further comprising means for drying the rinsing fluid using airflow past the extrusion head surface.
- 20. The system of claim 1, wherein the means for priming comprises means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head while the extrusion head is positioned above a receptacle for collecting said coating material.
- 21. The system of claim 1, wherein the means for priming comprises means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head while the extrusion head is positioned above a means for cleaning the extrusion head.
- 22. The system of claim 1, wherein the means for priming comprises means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head over a priming surface mobile with respect to said extrusion head, thereby establishing a relatively mobile priming surface.
- 23. The system of claim 1, further comprising means for placing the extrusion head at a height above said priming means substantially the same as a height of the extrusion head above a surface to be coated.
- 24. The system of claim 22, wherein the relatively mobile priming surface is a rotating cylinder, said cylinder having two ends.
- 25. The system of claim 24, wherein the rotating cylinder is supported at both ends and sags in between said ends in response to gravitational force.
- 26. The system of claim 24, wherein the rotating cylinder is selected and supported so as to sag in conformity with anticipated sag in a dispensing head to be primed using said rotating cylinder.
- 27. The system of claim 24, wherein the cylinder is disposed in a bath of solvent.
- 28. The system of claim 27, further comprising cylinder cleaning means.
- 29. The system of claim 28, wherein the cylinder cleaning means comprises a brush in contact with and rotatably mobile with respect to said cylinder.
- 30. The system of claim 22, wherein the means for priming is housed in a priming station, further comprising means for moving said means for priming into a position accessible to said extrusion head.
- 31. The system of claim 22, further comprising means for dissolving said coating material extruded from said extrusion head.
- 32. The system of claim 1, further comprising means for disposing the system for preparing within an extrusion head moving range.
- 33. The system of claim 1, wherein the coating apparatus comprises means for moving the extrusion head, the means for moving having an extrusion head moving range.
- 34. The system of claim 33, further comprising:means for moving the system for preparing out of the extrusion head moving range to permit the extrusion head to coat a substrate without interference; and means for moving the system for preparing into the extrusion head moving range to service the extrusion head, wherein the extrusion head moving means positions the extrusion head to be serviced at said system for preparing, thereby providing service to the extrusion head.
- 35. The system of claim 34, wherein the means for moving the extrusion head comprises means for moving the extrusion head substantially linearly.
- 36. The system of claim 34, wherein the means for moving the extrusion head comprises means for rotating the extrusion head; andthe system for preparing further comprises means for moving the system for preparing into position suitable for access by the extrusion head when said head is rotated into a position for preparing.
- 37. The system of claim 36, wherein the service provided to the extrusion head by the system for preparing comprises priming.
- 38. A system for preparing an extrusion head for a coating operation, the system comprising:means for cleaning the extrusion head, wherein the means for cleaning comprises means for rinsing the extrusion head; means for priming the extrusion head comprising means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head over a priming surface mobile with respect to said extrusion head, thereby establishing a relatively mobile priming surface, wherein the relatively mobile priming surface is a rotating cylinder, said cylinder having two ends; and means for disposing the means for cleaning and means for priming within a small footprint and convenient to a coating apparatus to permit rapid preparation of the extrusion head between coating operations.
- 39. The system of claim 38, wherein the system for preparing is disposed within the coating apparatus.
- 40. The system of claim 38, wherein the system for preparing is disposed on a cart which is removably attachable to said coating apparatus.
- 41. The system of claim 38, wherein the means for cleaning comprises means for scrubbing the extrusion head.
- 42. The system of claim 39, wherein the means for scrubbing comprises means for cleaning the extrusion head employing physical contact between at least one scrubbing instrument and said extrusion head.
- 43. The system of claim 42, wherein said means for scrubbing comprises means for rotating at least one brush against a surface to be cleaned on said extrusion head.
- 44. The system of claim 43, further comprising means for cleaning said at least one brush.
- 45. The system of claim 43, wherein said means for scrubbing further comprises:a solvent pool; and means for directing solvent toward an area of contact between said at least one brush and said extrusion head.
- 46. The system of claim 45, wherein the means for directing solvent includes means for heating the solvent.
- 47. The system of claim 43, wherein said at least one brush comprises two brushes.
- 48. The system of claim 38, wherein the means for rinsing is a rinsing station comprising:a fluid reservoir containing rinsing fluid; and means for directing said fluid toward the extrusion head.
- 49. The system of claim 48, further comprising means for heating the rinsing fluid before said fluid contacts the extrusion head.
- 50. The system of claim 48, further comprising means for ultrasonically agitating the rinsing fluid while said fluid is in contact with the extrusion head.
- 51. The system of claim 48, wherein the rinsing station further comprises a groove wherein the extrusion head resides during rinsing to permit recapture of rinsing solvent.
- 52. The system of claim 48, wherein the means for directing said rinsing fluid comprises a fluid flow structure leading fluid from said fluid reservoir to said extrusion head.
- 53. The system of claim 52, wherein the fluid flow structure comprises:vertical grooves disposed above and in communication with the fluid reservoir; and a slot in communication with the vertical grooves leading fluid to the extrusion head.
- 54. The system of claim 52, wherein the fluid flow structure comprises sintered material disposed between the fluid reservoir and the extrusion head for generating a curtain of rinsing fluid flow to said extrusion head.
- 55. The system of claim 48, where the means for directing fluid comprises a pump.
- 56. The system of claim 48, wherein the rinsing fluid is self-drying.
- 57. The system of claim 52, further comprising means for drying the rinsing fluid using airflow past the extrusion head surface.
- 58. The system of claim 38, further comprising means for placing the extrusion head at a height above said priming means substantially the same as a height of the extrusion head above a surface to be coated.
- 59. The system of claim 38, wherein the rotating cylinder is supported at both ends and sags in between said ends in response to gravitational force.
- 60. The system of claim 38, wherein the rotating cylinder is selected and supported so as to sag in conformity with anticipated sag in a dispensing head to be primed using said rotating cylinder.
- 61. The system of claim 38, wherein the cylinder is disposed in a bath of solvent.
- 62. The system of claim 61, further comprising cylinder cleaning means.
- 63. The system of claim 62, wherein the cylinder cleaning means comprises a brush in contact with and rotatably mobile with respect to said cylinder.
- 64. The system of claim 38, wherein the means for priming is housed in a priming station, further comprising means for moving said means for priming into a position accessible to said extrusion head.
- 65. The system of claim 38, further comprising means for dissolving said coating material extruded from said extrusion head.
- 66. The system of claim 38, further comprising means for disposing the system for preparing within an extrusion head moving range.
- 67. The system of claim 38, wherein the coating apparatus comprises means for moving the extrusion head, the means for moving having an extrusion head moving range.
- 68. The system of claim 67, further comprising:means for moving the system for preparing out of the extrusion head moving range to permit the extrusion head to coat a substrate without interference; and means for moving the system for preparing into the extrusion head moving range to service the extrusion head, wherein the extrusion head moving means positions the extrusion head to be serviced at said system for preparing, thereby providing service to the extrusion head.
- 69. The system of claim 68, wherein the means for moving the extrusion head comprises means for moving the extrusion head substantially linearly.
- 70. The system of claim 68, wherein the means for moving the extrusion head comprises means for rotating the extrusion head; andthe system for preparing further comprises means for moving the system for preparing into position suitable for access by the extrusion head when said head is rotated into a position for preparing.
- 71. The system of claim 70, wherein the service provided to the extrusion head by the system for preparing comprises priming.
- 72. A system for preparing an extrusion head for a coating operation, the system comprising:means for cleaning the extrusion head, wherein the means for cleaning is a rinsing station comprising: a fluid reservoir containing rinsing fluid; and means for directing said fluid a fluid flow structure comprising vertical grooves disposed above and in communication with the fluid reservoir and a slot in communication with the vertical grooves leading fluid from said fluid reservoir to said extrusion head; means for priming the extrusion head; and means for disposing the means for cleaning and means for priming within a small footprint and convenient to a coating apparatus to permit rapid preparation of the extrusion head between coating operations.
- 73. The system of claim 72, wherein the system for preparing is disposed within the coating apparatus.
- 74. The system of claim 72, wherein the system for preparing is disposed on a cart which is removably attachable to said coating apparatus.
- 75. The system of claim 72, wherein the means for priming comprises means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head while the extrusion head is positioned above a receptacle for collecting said coating material.
- 76. The system of claim 72, wherein the means for priming comprises means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head while the extrusion head is positioned above a means for cleaning the extrusion head.
- 77. The system of claim 72, wherein the means for priming comprises means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head over a priming surface mobile with respect to said extrusion head, thereby establishing a relatively mobile priming surface.
- 78. The system of claim 72, further comprising means for placing the extrusion head at a height above said priming means substantially the same as a height of the extrusion head above a surface to be coated.
- 79. The system of claim 77, wherein the relatively mobile priming surface is a rotating cylinder, said cylinder having two ends.
- 80. The system of claim 79, wherein the rotating cylinder is supported at both ends and sags in between said ends in response to gravitational force.
- 81. The system of claim 79, wherein the rotating cylinder is selected and supported so as to sag in conformity with anticipated sag in a dispensing head to be primed using said rotating cylinder.
- 82. The system of claim 79, wherein the cylinder is disposed in a bath of solvent.
- 83. The system of claim 82, further comprising cylinder cleaning means.
- 84. The system of claim 83, wherein the cylinder cleaning means comprises a brush in contact with and rotatably mobile with respect to said cylinder.
- 85. The system of claim 72, wherein the means for cleaning comprises means for scrubbing the extrusion head.
- 86. The system of claim 85, wherein the means for scrubbing comprises means for cleaning the extrusion head employing physical contact between at least one scrubbing instrument and said extrusion head.
- 87. The system of claim 86, wherein said means for scrubbing comprises means for rotating at least one brush against a surface to be cleaned on said extrusion head.
- 88. The system of claim 87, further comprising means for cleaning said at least one brush.
- 89. Apparatus for preparing an extrusion head for a coating operation, the apparatus comprising:a scrubbing station for removing viscous coating material from a surface to be cleaned on the extrusion head, thereby establishing a cleaning surface; a rinsing station for performing cleaning solvent removal from said cleaning surface; and a priming station for generating a full and uniform coating bead at the extrusion head.
- 90. The apparatus of claim 89, wherein the priming station comprises a priming surface partially immersed in a solvent bath.
- 91. The apparatus of claim 89, wherein the scrubbing station comprises a plurality of rotatable cylindrical scrubbers located so as to contact the extrusion head when said extrusion head is in position at the scrubbing station.
- 92. The apparatus of claim 91, wherein the dimensions and placement of the scrubbers are established to accommodate the extrusion head to be cleaned.
- 93. The apparatus of claim 89, wherein the rinsing station comprises:a pool of rinsing solvent; apparatus delivering said rinsing solvent to a surface to be cleaned on the extrusion head.
- 94. The apparatus of claim 93, further comprising a groove in which the extrusion head is located during rinsing to minimize the vertical footprint of the apparatus for preparing, and to permit efficient recapture of rinsing fluid.
- 95. The apparatus of claim 89, further comprising means for controlling operating parameters at at least one said station in response to characteristics of the extrusion head and of a coating operation.
- 96. The apparatus of claim 95, further comprising means for coordinating operating parameters in the apparatus for preparing with operating parameters of a coating apparatus.
- 97. The apparatus of claim 96, wherein the means for coordinating operating parameters comprises means for coordinating extrusion of coating material from the extrusion head with a velocity of a priming surface at said priming station.
- 98. Apparatus for automatically preparing an extrusion head for a coating operation, the apparatus comprising:means for cleaning the extrusion head comprising a plurality of cylindrical brushes disposed so as to occupy minimal space while allowing said extrusion head to contact said plurality of brushes for cleaning, wherein said cylindrical brushes have axes of rotation; and means for priming the extrusion head, wherein said means for cleaning and said means for priming are disposed close to a substrate to be coated and within a small footprint thereby enabling rapid preparation of the extrusion head between coating operations.
- 99. The apparatus of claim 98, wherein the means for cleaning further comprises means for directing solvent at a surface to be cleaned on said extrusion head, wherein the brushes cooperate with solvent to remove coating material from said surface to be cleaned.
- 100. The apparatus of claim 98, wherein the means for cleaning further comprises:a solvent pool; and inlet and outlet ports to said solvent pool to permit used solvent to be removed and new solvent to be introduced to said solvent pool.
- 101. The apparatus of claim 98, wherein the axes of rotation of said cylindrical brushes are fixed with respect to the apparatus.
- 102. The apparatus of claim 98, wherein the axes of rotation of said cylindrical brushes are movable with respect to the apparatus.
- 103. The apparatus of claim 98, wherein the means for cleaning comprises means for rinsing said extrusion head.
- 104. The apparatus of claim 103, wherein the means for rinsing comprises a recessed area for placement of the extrusion head during rinsing, said recessed area having a bottom, wherein said recessed area permits the means for rinsing to occupy a smaller footprint.
- 105. The apparatus of claim 104, wherein the means for rinsing further comprises holes disposed along the bottom of said recessed area to permit recapture of fluid used during rinsing.
- 106. The apparatus of claim 104, wherein the means for rinsing comprises means for directing an uninterrupted curtain of solvent flow toward a surface to be cleaned on said extrusion head.
- 107. The apparatus of claim 104, wherein the means for priming comprises a cylindrical priming surface to occupy a minimal footprint.
- 108. The apparatus of claim 107, wherein the cylindrical priming surface is disposed in a solvent pool, and the means for priming further comprises means for rotating the cylindrical priming surface.
- 109. The apparatus of claim 107, further comprising means for rapidly removing solvents from the extrusion head to permit said extrusion head to resume coating operations with minimal delay.
- 110. The apparatus of claim 109, further comprising means for scheduling cleaning and priming of the extrusion head to substantially coincide with removal of a substrate coated by said extrusion head from a chuck, and placement of a substrate to be coated by said extrusion head in said chuck, wherein said removal of a coated substrate, said placement of a substrate to be coated, and coating of said substrate to be coated by the extrusion head represents a cycle of a coating apparatus.
- 111. The apparatus of claim 110, wherein means for cleaning and means for priming of the extrusion head are activated once for each cycle of the coating apparatus.
- 112. The apparatus of claim 110, wherein means for cleaning and means for priming of the extrusion head are activated only upon completion of a plurality of cycles of the coating apparatus since a previous activation of said means for cleaning and said means for priming.
- 113. Apparatus for automatically preparing an extrusion head for a coating operation, the apparatus comprising:means for cleaning the extrusion head, wherein the means for cleaning comprises means for rinsing said extrusion head, wherein the means for rinsing comprises a recessed area for placement of the extrusion head during rinsing, said recessed area having a bottom, wherein said recessed area permits the means for rinsing to occupy a smaller footprint; and means for priming the extrusion head comprising a cylindrical priming surface to occupy a minimal footprint, wherein said means for cleaning and said means for priming are disposed close to a substrate to be coated and within a small footprint thereby enabling rapid preparation of the extrusion head between coating operations.
- 114. The apparatus of claim 113, wherein the means for rinsing further comprises holes disposed along the bottom of said recessed area to permit recapture of fluid used during rinsing.
- 115. The apparatus of claim 113, wherein the means for rinsing comprises means for directing an uninterrupted curtain of solvent flow toward a surface to be cleaned on said extrusion head.
- 116. The apparatus of claim 113, wherein the cylindrical priming surface is disposed in a solvent pool, and the means for priming further comprises means for rotating the cylindrical priming surface.
- 117. The apparatus of claim 113, further comprising means for rapidly removing solvents from the extrusion head to permit said extrusion head to resume coating operations with minimal delay.
- 118. The apparatus of claim 117, further comprising means for scheduling cleaning and priming of the extrusion head to substantially coincide with removal of a substrate coated by said extrusion head from a chuck, and placement of a substrate to be coated by said extrusion head in said chuck, wherein said removal of a coated substrate, said placement of a substrate to be coated, and coating of said substrate to be coated by the extrusion head represents a cycle of a coating apparatus.
- 119. The apparatus of claim 118, wherein means for cleaning and means for priming of the extrusion head are activated once for each cycle of the coating apparatus.
- 120. The apparatus of claim 118, wherein means for cleaning and means for priming of the extrusion head are activated only upon completion of a plurality of cycles of the coating apparatus since a previous activation of said means for cleaning and said means for priming.
- 121. A system for preparing an extrusion head for operation, the apparatus comprising:means for scrubbing the extrusion head; means for rinsing said extrusion head; and means for priming said extrusion head.
- 122. The system of claim 121, wherein said means for priming includes a priming surface movable with respect to an extrusion head held stationary.
- 123. The system of claim 121, wherein said means for priming comprises:means for priming a previously rinsed extrusion head.
- 124. The system of claim 121, wherein said means for rinsing and said means for priming are disposed within a small footprint.
- 125. The system of claim 121, wherein the rinsing means and the priming means are adaptable for placement on a cart which is removably attachable to a coating apparatus.
- 126. Apparatus for preparing an extrusion head for a coating operation, the apparatus comprising:a scrubber for removing coating material from a surface on said extrusion head adjacent to an extrusion orifice of said extrusion head; and a priming roller disposed in proximity to said scrubber adapted to rotate while receiving coating material from said extrusion head.
- 127. The apparatus of claim 126, wherein the scrubbing assembly comprises a cylindrical scrubber having a plurality of bristles disposed along its length.
- 128. The apparatus of claim 126, further comprising:means for scrubbing a surface on said extrusion head adjacent to an extrusion orifice of said extrusion head.
- 129. The apparatus of claim 126, further comprising:a rinsing station disposed in proximity to said scrubber and said priming assembly.
- 130. A system for preparing an extrusion head for a coating operation, the system comprising: means for cleaning the extrusion head; means for priming the extrusion head generating a full and uniform coating bead at the extrusion head; and means for disposing the means for cleaning and means for priming within a small footprint and convenient to a coating apparatus to permit rapid preparation of the extrusion between coating operations, wherein the system for preparing is disposed on a cart which is removably attachable to said coating apparatus.
- 131. A system for preparing an extrusion head for a coating operation, the system comprising: means for cleaning the extrusion head; means for priming the extrusion head generating a full and uniform coating bead at the extrusion head; and means for disposing the means for cleaning and means for priming within a small footprint and convenient to a coating apparatus to permit rapid preparation of the extrusion between coating operations.
- 132. The system of claim 131, wherein the system for preparing is disposed within the coating apparatus.
- 133. The system of claim 131, wherein the system for preparing is disposed on a cart which is removably attachable to said coating apparatus.
- 134. The system of claim 131, wherein the means for cleaning comprises means for scrubbing the extrusion head.
- 135. The system of claim 131, wherein the means for scrubbing comprises means for cleaning the extrusion head employing physical contact between at least one scrubbing instrument and said extrusion head.
- 136. The system of claim 135, wherein said means for scrubbing comprises means for rotating at least one brush against a surface to be cleaned on said extrusion head.
- 137. The system of claim 136, further comprising means for cleaning said at least one brush.
- 138. The system of claim 136, wherein said means for scrubbing further comprises:a solvent pool; and means for directing solvent toward an area of contact between said at least one brush and said extrusion head.
- 139. The system of claim 138, wherein the means for directing solvent includes means for heating the solvent.
- 140. The system of claim 136, wherein said at least one brush comprises two brushes.
- 141. The system of claim 131, wherein the means for rinsing is a rinsing station comprising:a fluid reservoir containing rinsing fluid; and means for directing said fluid toward the extrusion head.
- 142. The system of claim 141, further comprising means for heating the rinsing fluid before said fluid contacts the extrusion head.
- 143. The system of claim 141, further comprising means for ultrasonically agitating the rinsing fluid while said fluid is in contact with the extrusion head.
- 144. The system of claim 141, wherein the rinsing station further comprises a groove wherein the extrusion head resides during rinsing to permit recapture of rinsing solvent.
- 145. The system of claim 141, wherein the means for directing said rinsing fluid comprises a fluid flow structure leading fluid from said fluid reservoir to said extrusion head.
- 146. The system of claim 145, wherein the fluid flow structure comprises:vertical grooves disposed above and in communication with the fluid reservoir; and a slot in communication with the vertical grooves leading fluid to the extrusion head.
- 147. The system of claim 145, wherein the fluid flow structure comprises sintered material disposed between the fluid reservoir and the extrusion head for generating a curtain of rinsing fluid flow to said extrusion head.
- 148. The system of claim 141, where the means for directing fluid comprises a pump.
- 149. The system of claim 141, wherein the rinsing fluid is self-drying.
- 150. The system of claim 145, further comprising means for drying the rinsing fluid using airflow past the extrusion head surface.
- 151. The system of claim 131, wherein the means for priming comprises means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head while the extrusion head is positioned above a receptacle for collecting said coating material.
- 152. The system of claim 131, wherein the means for priming comprises means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head while the extrusion head is positioned above a means for cleaning the extrusion head.
- 153. The system of claim 131, wherein the means for priming comprises means for extruding coating material from the extrusion head over a priming surface mobile with respect to said extrusion head, thereby establishing a relatively mobile priming surface.
- 154. The system of claim 131, further comprising means for placing the extrusion head at a height above said priming means substantially the same as a height of the extrusion head above a surface to be coated.
- 155. The system of claim 153, wherein the relatively mobile priming surface is a rotating cylinder, said cylinder having two ends.
- 156. The system of claim 155, wherein the rotating cylinder is supported at both ends and sags in between said ends in response to gravitational force.
- 157. The system of claim 155, wherein the rotating cylinder is selected and supported so as to sag in conformity with anticipated sag in a dispensing head to be primed using said rotating cylinder.
- 158. The system of claim 155, wherein the cylinder is disposed in a bath of solvent.
- 159. The system of claim 158, further comprising cylinder cleaning means.
- 160. The system of claim 159, wherein the cylinder cleaning means comprises a brush in contact with and rotatably mobile with respect to said cylinder.
- 161. The system of claim 153, wherein the means for priming is housed in a priming station, further comprising means for moving said means for priming into a position accessible to said extrusion head.
- 162. The system of claim 153, further comprising means for dissolving said coating material extruded from said extrusion head.
- 163. The system of claim 131, further comprising means for disposing the system for preparing within an extrusion head moving range.
- 164. The system of claim 131, wherein the coating apparatus comprises means for moving the extrusion head, the means for moving having an extrusion head moving range.
- 165. The system of claim 164, further comprising:means for moving the system for preparing out of the extrusion head moving range to permit the extrusion head to coat a substrate without interference; and means for moving the system for preparing into the extrusion head moving range to service the extrusion head, wherein the extrusion head moving means positions the extrusion head to be serviced at said system for preparing, thereby providing service to the extrusion head.
- 166. The system of claim 165, wherein the means for moving the extrusion head comprises means for moving the extrusion head substantially linearly.
- 167. The system of claim 165, wherein the means for moving the extrusion head comprises means for rotating the extrusion head; andthe system for preparing further comprises means for moving the system for preparing into position suitable for access by the extrusion head when said head is rotated into a position for preparing.
- 168. The system of claim 167, wherein the service provided to the extrusion head by the system for preparing comprises priming.
- 169. A system for preparing an extrusion head for operation, said system comprising:means for rinsing said extrusion head; and a priming means for priming said extrusion head, said priming means including a priming surface movable with respect to an extrusion head held stationary.
- 170. The system of claim 169, further including means for scrubbing said extrusion head.
- 171. The system of claim 169, wherein the rinsing means and the priming means are adapted for placement on a cart which is removably attachable to a coating apparatus.
