- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
determining a geographic position of the first locomotive and a geographic position of the second locomotive, wherein the power operating mode of the first locomotive and the power operating mode of the second locomotive are determined as function of the determined geographic position of the first locomotive and the determined geographic position of the second locomotive.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the optimization parameter is a performance parameter, wherein a performance profile of the first and second locomotives is known and wherein the first and second operating modes are selected to optimize the performance parameter as a function of the performance profile.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the optimization parameter is identification of a locomotive in which a crew member is located or a locomotive in which a crew member is not riding.
- 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
determining the grade of a track on which the consist is traversing, wherein the power operating mode of the first locomotive and the power operating mode of the second locomotive are determined as a function of the grade of the track.
- 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
communicating a first locomotive profile from the first locomotive; and communicating a second locomotive profile from the second locomotive, wherein determining the power operating mode of the first locomotive and the power operating mode of the second locomotive are a function of the first locomotive profile and the second locomotive profile.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the first locomotive profile and the second locomotive profile include a type of locomotive or a fuel efficiency of the locomotive.
- 12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
storing a first locomotive profile from the first locomotive; and storing a second locomotive profile from the second locomotive, wherein determining the power operating mode of the first locomotive and the power operating mode of the second locomotive are a function of the first locomotive profile and the second locomotive profile.
- 13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
communicating a first locomotive operating characteristic from the first locomotive; and communicating a second locomotive operating characteristic from the second locomotive, wherein determining the power operating mode of the first locomotive and the power operating mode of the second locomotive are a function of the first locomotive operating characteristic and the second locomotive operating characteristic.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the first locomotive operating characteristic and the second locomotive operating characteristic are one or more of the following: a fuel level, a fuel flow rate, electric power generated by the locomotive, tractive effort and wheel slip.
- 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the power operating mode of the first locomotive is a first locomotive throttle setting and the power operating mode of the second locomotive is a second locomotive throttle setting.
- 16. The method of claim 1, where the received control command is received from an operator.
- 17. The method of claim 1, where the received control command is received from a remote control system.
- 18. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
communicating the determined power operating mode of the first locomotive over a communication link to the first locomotive; and communicating the power operating mode of the second locomotive over a communication link to the second locomotive;
- 19. A method for controlling a consist of at least first and second locomotives having discrete operating modes, said method comprising:
receiving a control command from an operator; controlling an operation of the first locomotive responsive to the power operating mode of the first locomotive, said power operating mode of the first locomotive being indicative of the control command; determining a power operating mode of the second locomotive as a function of the control command, said power operating mode of the second locomotive being different as compared to the power operating mode of the first locomotive in at least one mode of operation of the method; communicating the power operating mode of the second locomotive over a communication link to the second locomotive; and controlling an operation of the second locomotive responsive to the power operating mode of the second locomotive.
