Claims
- 1. A system for recovering from performance errors in an optical disc drive for optical media with a pitted premastered area that cannot be overwritten and a grooved user-writeable area that can be overwritten, comprising:
instructions operable to detect a problem with at least one of: focus control, tracking control, or spin control when accessing the optical media; instructions operable to save the current state of the disc drive; instructions operable to attempt to recover from the problem; and instructions operable to restore the current state of the disc drive after recovering from the problem.
- 2. The system, as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
instructions operable to classify the problem as a spin, focus, or tracking control problem.
- 3. The system, as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
instructions operable to control the disc drive to a state from which recovery can be attempted.
- 4. The system, as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
instructions operable to determine whether the recovery attempt was successful.
- 5. The system, as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
instructions operable to turn off tracking and focus when a problem with spin control is detected.
- 6. The system, as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
instructions operable to turn off tracking when a problem with focus control is detected.
- 7. The system, as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
instructions operable to turn off tracking when a problem with tracking control is detected.
- 8. The system, as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
instructions operable to determine whether a tracking actuator arm is positioned off a formatted portion of an optical disc.
- 9. The system, as set forth in claim 8, further comprising:
instructions operable to position the tracking actuator arm to a predetermined location when the tracking actuator arm is positioned off the formatted portion of the optical disc.
- 10. The system, as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
instructions operable to determine whether the attempt to recover from the problem is excessive.
- 11. A method for recovering from performance errors in an optical disc drive for optical media with a pitted premastered area that cannot be overwritten and a grooved user-writeable area that can be overwritten, comprising:
detecting a problem with at least one of: focus control, tracking control, or spin control when accessing the optical media; saving the current state of the disc drive; attempting to recover from the problem; and restoring the current state of the disc drive after recovering from the problem.
- 12. The method, as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:
classifying the problem as a spin, focus, or tracking control problem.
- 13. The method, as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:
controlling the disc drive to a state from which recovery can be attempted.
- 14. The method, as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:
determining whether the recovery attempt was successful.
- 15. The method, as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:
turning off tracking and focus when a problem with spin control is detected.
- 16. The method, as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:
turning off tracking when a problem with focus control is detected.
- 17. The method, as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:
turning off tracking when a problem with tracking control is detected.
- 18. The method, as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:
determining whether a tracking actuator arm is positioned off a formatted portion of an optical disc.
- 19. The method, as set forth in claim 18, further comprising:
positioning the tracking actuator arm to a predetermined location when the tracking actuator arm is positioned off the formatted portion of the optical disc.
- 20. The method, as set forth in claim 11, further comprising:
determining whether the attempt to recover from the problem is excessive.
- 21. An apparatus for recovering from performance errors in an optical disc drive for optical media with a pitted premastered area that cannot be overwritten and a grooved user-writeable area that can be overwritten, comprising:
means for detecting a problem with at least one of: focus control, tracking control, or spin control when accessing the optical media; means for saving the current state of the disc drive; means for attempting to recover from the problem; and means for restoring the current state of the disc drive after recovering from the problem.
- 22. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 21, further comprising:
means for classifying the problem as a spin, focus, or tracking control problem.
- 23. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 21, further comprising:
means for controlling the disc drive to a state from which recovery can be attempted.
- 24. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 21, further comprising:
means for determining whether the recovery attempt was successful.
- 25. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 21, further comprising:
means for turning off tracking and focus when a problem with spin control is detected.
- 26. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 21, further comprising:
means for turn off tracking when a problem with focus control is detected.
- 27. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 21, further comprising:
means for turning off tracking when a problem with tracking control is detected.
- 28. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 21, further comprising:
means for determining whether a tracking actuator arm is positioned off a formatted portion of an optical disc.
- 29. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 28, further comprising:
means for positioning the tracking actuator arm to a predetermined location when the tracking actuator arm is positioned off the formatted portion of the optical disc.
- 30. The apparatus, as set forth in claim 21, further comprising:
means for determining whether the attempt to recover from the problem is excessive.
- 31. A computer program product comprising: instructions to implement the method of claim 11.
- 32. A carrier wave data signal comprising: instructions to implement the method of claim 11.
