Abstract
Compliance with a standard is demonstrated by displaying a floor plan on a first computer. The displayed floor plan includes designated areas. Each designated area includes a corresponding communication link, and the designated areas are regulated by the standard. A message is transmitted to a second computer in response to selection of one of the designated areas by a user on the first computer. The message is dependent upon the communication link corresponding to the selected designated area and causes compliance information to be downloaded by the second computer to the first computer. The compliance information is displayed on the first computer and demonstrates that the selected designated area is in compliance with the standard.
Description
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a system which assists an organization in demonstrating compliance with standards.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Insurance companies and/or governments require certain buildings, such as hospitals, schools, businesses, and the like, to comply with a variety of standards. These standards may be in the form of industry standards, local codes, federal regulations, state regulations, local regulations, and/or the like, and may regulate, for example, protection against the hazards of fire, smoke, asbestos, and/or the like. In order to assure compliance with applicable standards, inspectors periodically conduct inspections of the buildings covered by such standards. During such inspections, it is incumbent upon building administrators to demonstrate compliance with these standards.
Demonstrating such compliance is often tedious and expensive. For example, pipes running through walls of a building must be sealed with a material acting as a firestop in order to comply with firestop standards. However, these firestops may be between walls, in elevator shafts, and in other places that are often inaccessible or not easily accessible to inspectors. Therefore, it may be necessary to destroy portions of inspected buildings in order to demonstrate compliance with applicable standards.
The present invention permits the administrator of a building to demonstrate compliance to an inspector without destructive testing.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a method executed on a computer comprises the following steps: a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan is regulated by a standard; and, b) displaying information demonstrating that the floor plan is in compliance with the standard.
In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, a method executed on a computer comprises the following steps: a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan includes designated areas, and wherein the designated areas are regulated by a standard; and, b) in response to selection by the user of one of the designated areas, displaying information demonstrating that the selected designated area is in compliance with the standard.
In accordance with still another aspect of the present invention, a method for demonstrating compliance with a standard comprises the following steps which are executed on a first computer: a) displaying a floor plan on the first computer, wherein the displayed floor plan is selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan includes designated areas, wherein each designated area includes a corresponding communication link, and wherein the designated areas are governed by a standard; b) transmitting a message to a second computer in response to selection of one of the designated areas by the user on the first computer, wherein the message is dependent upon the communication link corresponding to the selected designated area; c) receiving information from the second computer, wherein the information demonstrates that the selected designated area is in compliance with the standard; and, d) displaying the information on the first computer.

Certain modifications of the present invention have been discussed above. Other modifications will occur to those practicing in the art of the present invention. For example, as described above, floor plans are displayed by a local computer located in a first building and are used to access information demonstrating compliance from a central computer located in a second building. However, the present invention need not require a central computer. Instead, both the floor plans and the information demonstrating compliance may be stored on the local computer located in a building to be inspected.

Claims
- 1. A method executed on a computer comprising the following steps:a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan is regulated by a standard; and, b) displaying information demonstrating that the floor plan is in compliance with the standard, wherein the displayed information includes before and after illustrations, wherein the before illustration illustrates at least a portion of the floor plan before compliance with the standard, and wherein the after illustration illustrates at least the portion of the floor plan after compliance with the standard.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the displayed information includes an illustration pertinent to the floor plan, and wherein the illustration illustrates compliance with the standard.
- 3. A method executed on a computer comprising the following steps:a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan includes designated areas, and wherein the designated areas are regulated by a standard; and, b) in response to selection by the user of one of the designated areas, displaying information demonstrating that the selected designated area is in compliance with the standard.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the displayed information includes an illustration of the selected designated area, and wherein the illustration illustrates compliance with the standard.
- 5. The method of claim 3 wherein the displayed information includes before and after illustrations of the selected designated area, wherein the before illustration illustrates the selected designated area before compliance with the standard, and wherein the after illustration illustrates the selected designated area after compliance with the standard.
- 6. The method of claim 3 wherein the displayed information includes at least a portion of the standard relating to the selected designated area.
- 7. The method of claim 3 wherein the displayed information includes a description of the selected designated area, wherein the description includes first and second Goto areas, wherein the first Goto area permits the user to view at least a portion of the standard relating to the selected designated area, and wherein the second Goto area permits the user to view an illustration of the selected designated area.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the illustration illustrates compliance with the standard.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein the illustration includes before and after illustrations of the selected designated area, wherein the before illustration illustrates the selected designated area before compliance with the standard, and wherein the after illustration illustrates the selected designated area after compliance with the standard.
- 10. The method of claim 3 wherein the displayed information includes a description of the selected designated area, wherein the description includes a Goto area, and wherein selection of the Goto area causes compliance information of the selected designated area to be displayed.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the compliance information includes an illustration showing compliance of the selected designated area to be displayed.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein the compliance information includes before and after illustrations to be displayed, wherein the before illustration shows the selected designated area before compliance, and wherein the after illustration shows the selected designated area after compliance.
- 13. The method of claim 10 wherein the compliance information includes a portion of the standard pertinent to the selected designated area to be displayed.

- 17. A method for demonstrating compliance with a standard comprising the following steps executed on a first computer:a) displaying a floor plan on the first computer, wherein the displayed floor plan is selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan includes designated areas, wherein each designated area includes a corresponding communication link, and wherein the designated areas are governed by a standard; b) transmitting a message to a second computer in response to selection of one of the designated areas by the user on the first computer, wherein the message is dependent upon the communication link corresponding to the selected designated area; c) receiving information from the second computer, wherein the information demonstrates that the selected designated area is in compliance with the standard; and, d) displaying the information on the first computer.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the information displayed on the first computer includes an illustration of the selected designated area, and wherein the illustration illustrates compliance with the standard.
- 19. The method of claim 17 wherein the information displayed on the first computer includes before and after illustrations of the selected designated area, wherein the before illustration illustrates the selected designated area before compliance with the standard, and wherein the after illustration illustrates the selected designated area after compliance with the standard.
- 20. The method of claim 17 wherein the information displayed on the first computer includes at least a portion of the standard relating to the selected designated area.
- 21. The method of claim 17 wherein the information displayed on the first computer includes a description of the selected designated area, wherein the description includes first and second Goto areas, wherein the first Goto area permits the user to view at least a portion of the standard relating to the selected designated area, and wherein the second Goto area permits the user to view an illustration of the selected designated area.
- 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the illustration illustrates compliance with the standard.
- 23. The method of claim 21 wherein the illustration includes before and after illustrations of the selected designated area, wherein the before illustration illustrates the selected designated area before compliance with the standard, and wherein the after illustration illustrates the selected designated area after compliance with the standard.
- 24. The method of claim 17 wherein the information displayed on the first computer includes a description of the selected designated area, wherein the description includes a Goto area, and wherein selection of the Goto area causes compliance information of the selected designated area to be displayed.
- 25. The method of claim 24 wherein the compliance information includes an illustration showing compliance of the selected designated area to be displayed.
- 26. The method of claim 24 wherein the compliance information includes before and after illustrations to be displayed, wherein the before illustration shows the selected designated area before compliance, and wherein the after illustration shows the selected designated area after compliance.
- 27. The method of claim 24 wherein the compliance information includes a portion of the standard pertinent to the selected designated area to be displayed.
- 28. The method of claim 27 wherein the communication links include Internet addresses to the second computer.
- 29. The method of claim 17 wherein the first computer is located within a first building governed by the standard, and wherein the second computer is located within a second building.

- 32. A method executed on a computer comprising the following steps:a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan is regulated by a standard; and, b) displaying information demonstrating that the floor plan is in compliance with the standard, wherein the displayed information includes at least a portion of the standard.
- 33. A method executed on a computer comprising the following steps:a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan is regulated by a standard; and, b) displaying information demonstrating that the floor plan is in compliance with the standard, wherein the displayed information includes a description pertinent to at least a portion of the floor plan, wherein the description includes a Goto area, and wherein selection of the Goto area causes compliance information of at least the portion of the floor plan to be displayed.
- 34. The method of claim 33 wherein the compliance information includes an illustration showing compliance of at least the portion of the floor plan to be displayed.
- 35. The method of claim 33 wherein the compliance information includes before and after illustrations to be displayed, wherein the before illustration shows at least the portion of the floor plan before compliance, and wherein the after illustration shows at least the portion of the floor plan after compliance.
- 36. The method of claim 33 wherein the compliance information includes a portion of the standard pertinent to the portion of the floor plan to be displayed.

A method executed on a computer comprising the following steps:a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan is regulated by a standard; and, b) displaying information demonstrating that the floor plan is in compliance with the standard, wherein the displayed information includes a description of at least a portion of the floor plan, wherein the description includes first and second Goto areas, wherein the first Goto area permits the user to view at least a portion of the standard relating to at least the portion of the floor plan, and wherein the second Goto area permits the user to view an illustration of at least the portion of the floor plan.
- 38. The method of claim 37 wherein the illustration illustrates compliance with the standard.
- 39. The method of claim 37 wherein the illustration includes before and after illustrations of at least the portion of the floor plan, wherein the before illustration illustrates at least the portion of the floor plan before compliance with the standard, and wherein the after illustration illustrates at least the portion of the floor plan after compliance with the standard.
- 40. A method executed on a computer comprising the following steps:a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan is regulated by a standard, and wherein the standard relates to firestops; and, b) displaying information demonstrating that the floor plan is in compliance with the standard.
- 41. A method executed on a computer comprising the following steps:a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan is regulated by a standard, and wherein the standard relates to asbestos; and, b) displaying information demonstrating that the floor plan is in compliance with the standard.
- 42. A method executed on a computer comprising the following steps:a) displaying a floor plan selected by a user, wherein the displayed floor plan is regulated by a standard, and wherein a communication link is embedded in the displayed floor plan; and, b) displaying information demonstrating that the floor plan is in compliance with the standard.
