Claims
- 1. A system for plotting a graphic image on a substrate, the system comprising:
- scanning-head means for directing n beams onto the substrate, where n is an integer greater than one;
- first axis translation means for causing relative movement of the beams along a first axis of the substrate; and
- second axis translation means for causing relative movement of the beams along a second axis of the substrate, so as to create a succession of passes by the scanning-head means at intervals along the second axis,
- wherein during each pass each beam exposes points on the substrate that define a line substantially parallel to the first axis, each line having a width w, wherein between each pair of adjacent lines being plotted simultaneously there is a strip of the substrate n times w wide, where w is a real number greater than zero, and wherein the strip is exposed by beams during prior and subsequent passes.
- 2. A system according to claim 1, wherein the scanning-head means includes
- source means for providing an original beam;
- deflection means, having an input, for deflecting along a path n portions of the original beam, each portion being deflected by an amount dependent upon the frequency of a signal that is present at the input, wherein the n portions of the original beam form the n beams;
- a signal generator for providing n signals, each signal having a different frequency, to the input of the deflection means.
- 3. A system according to claim 2,
- wherein the source means provides two original beams having different wavelengths;
- wherein the deflection means deflects along a path n portions of each of the two original beams by amounts dependent upon the frequencies of the signal present at the input;
- wherein the signal generator provides n signals for each of the two original beams, so that the deflection means creates n beam portions from each of the two original beams.
- 4. A system according to claim 3, wherein the source means further includes means for providing a third original beam having a third wavelength.
- 5. A system according to claim 3, wherein the deflection means includes
- an acousto-optical crystal for each of the two original beams, each crystal being positioned so that the corresponding beam passes through the crystal, and
- a transducer for causing vibrations in each crystal based on the frequency of the signal received by the deflection means.
- 6. A system according to claim 5, wherein the first axis is disposed circumferentially about a cylinder, on which the substrate is situated, the cylinder having a central axis, and the second axis is disposed parallel to the central axis; and
- wherein the first axis translation means includes means for rotating the cylinder around the central axis, and the second axis translation means includes means for moving the scanning-head means in a direction parallel to the central axis, so as to cause the substrate to be plotted along a plurality of helical paths around the circumference of the cylinder.
- 7. A system for plotting a graphic image on a substrate, the system comprising:
- scanning-head means for directing n beams onto the substrate, where n is an integer greater than one:
- first axis translation means for causing relative movement of the beams along a first axis of the substrate: and
- second axis translation means for causing relative movement of the beams along a second axis of the substrate,
- wherein each beam exposes points on the substrate that define a line substantially parallel to the first axis, each line having a width w, wherein between each pair of adjacent lines being plotted simultaneously there is a strip of the substrate n times w wide, where w is a real number greater than zero;
- wherein the scanning-head means includes
- source means for providing an original beam:
- deflection means, having an input, for deflecting along a path n portions of the original beam, each portion being deflected by an amount dependent upon the frequency of a signal that is present at the input, wherein the n portions of the original beam form the n beams:
- a signal generator for providing n signals, each signal having a different frequency, to the input of the deflection means;
- wherein the source means provides two original beams having different wavelengths;
- wherein the deflection means deflects along a path n portions of each of the two original beams by amounts dependent upon the frequencies of the signal present at the input;
- wherein the signal generator provides n signals for each of the two original beams, so that the deflection means creates n beam portions from each of the two original beams;
- wherein the deflection means includes
- an acousto-optical crystal for each of the two original beams, each crystal being positioned so that the corresponding beam passes through the crystal, and
- a transducer for causing vibrations in each crystal based on the frequency of the signal received by the deflection means;
- wherein the first axis is disposed circumferentially about a cylinder, on which the substrate is situated, the cylinder having a central axis, and the second axis is disposed parallel to the central axis;
- wherein the first axis translation means includes means for rotating the cylinder around the central axis, and the second axis translation means includes means for moving the scanning-head means in a direction parallel to the central axis, so as to cause the substrate to be plotted along a plurality of helical paths around the circumference of the cylinder;
- wherein the scanning-head means includes a plate located in the path of the beams between the deflection means and the substrate, the plate having n apertures for permitting the n beams to pass through the plate.
- 8. A system according to claim 7, wherein the scanning-head means includes means for moving the plate out of the path of the beams.
- 9. A system according to claim 8, wherein the signal generator may produce a plurality of signals which includes a first set of signals below an established frequency and a second set of signals above the established frequency, and the signal generator includes means for supplying simultaneously to the deflection means a signal from the first set and a signal from the second set in successive pairs of signals so as to cause scanning of beam portions in a direction parallel to the second axis simultaneously at two different and proximate locations on the first axis.
- 10. A system for plotting a graphic image on a substrate, the system comprising:
- scanning-head means for directing n beams onto the substrate, where n is an integer greater than one;
- first axis translation means for causing relative movement of the beams along a first axis of the substrate; and
- second axis translation means for causing relative movement of the beams along a second axis of the substrate;
- wherein each beam exposes points on the substrate that define a line substantially parallel to the first axis, each line having a width w, wherein between each pair of adjacent lines being plotted simultaneously there is a strip of the substrate n times w wide, where w is a real number greater than zero,
- wherein the scanning-head means includes
- source means for providing an original beam;
- deflection means, having an input, for deflecting along a path n portions of the original beam, each portion being deflected by an amount dependent upon the frequency of a signal that is present at the input, wherein the n portions of the original beam form the n beams;
- a signal generator for providing n signals, each signal having a different frequency, to the input of the deflection means;
- wherein the scanning-head means includes a plate located in the path of the beams between the deflection means and the substrate, the plate having n apertures for permitting the n beams to pass through the plate.
- 11. A system according to claim 10, wherein the scanning-head means includes means for moving the plate out of the path of the beams.
- 12. A system according to claim 11, wherein the signal generator may produce a plurality of signals which includes a first set of signals below an established frequency and a second set of signals above the established frequency, and the signal generator includes means for supplying simultaneously to the deflection means a signal from the first set and a signal from the second set in successive pairs of signals so as to cause scanning of beams in a direction parallel to the second axis simultaneously at two different and proximate locations on the first axis.
- 13. A system for plotting a graphic image on a substrate, the system comprising:
- scanning-head means for directing n beams onto the substrate, each beam having a width w, where n is an integer greater than one and w is a real number greater than zero;
- first axis translation means for causing relative movement of the scanning-head means along a first axis of the substrate, so that each beam exposes points on the substrate that define a line substantially parallel to the first axis; and
- second axis translation means for causing relative movement of the scanning-head means along a second axis of the substrate, the relative movement along the second axis being slower than the relative movement along the first axis, so that the scanning head makes more than two passes across the substrate along the first axis while making only one pass along the second axis;
- wherein between each pair of adjacent lines being plotted during the same pass along the first axis there is a strip of the substrate n times w wide, wherein the strip is exposed by beams during prior and subsequent passes, and wherein during each pass the second translation means causes relative movement of a distance n times w between the scanning head means and the substrate along the second axis.
- 14. A system for plotting a graphic image on a substrate, the system comprising:
- scanning-head means for directing n beams onto the substrate, each beam having a width w, where n is an integer greater than one and w is a real number greater than zero;
- first axis translation means for causing relative movement of the scanning-head means along a first axis of the substrate, so that each beam exposes points on the substrate that define a line substantially parallel to the first axis; and
- second axis translation means for causing relative movement of the scanning-head means along a second axis of the substrate, the relative movement along the second axis being slower than the relative movement along the first axis, so that the scanning head makes more than one pass across the substrate along the first axis while making only one pass along the second axis;
- wherein between each pair of adjacent lines being plotted during the same pass along the first axis there is a strip of the substrate n times w wide, and wherein the second translation means causes relative movement of a distance n times w between the scanning head means and the substrate along the second axis,
- wherein the scanning-head means includes a plate located in the path of the beams, the plate having at least n apertures for permitting the n beams to pass through the plate.
- 15. A system according to claim 14, wherein the scanning-head means includes means for moving the plate out of the path of the beams.
- 16. A system according to claim 15, wherein the scanning-head means includes
- source means for providing an original beam;
- deflection means, having an input, for deflecting along a path n portions of the original beam, each portion being deflected by an amount dependent upon the frequency of a signal that is present at the input, wherein the n portions of the original beam form the n beams;
- a signal generator for providing n signals, each signal having a different frequency, to the input of the deflection means.
- 17. A system according to claim 16, wherein the signal generator may produce a plurality of signals which includes a first set of signals below an established frequency and a second set of signals above the established frequency, and the signal generator includes means for supplying simultaneously to the deflection means a signal from the first set and a signal from the second set in successive pairs of signals so as to cause scanning of beams in a direction parallel to the second axis simultaneously at two different and proximate locations on the first axis.
