Claims
- 1. An apparatus, comprising:
an input device configured to accept and to transmit a telephone number offered by an entity in conjunction with a proposed financial transaction; a computer processor configured to receive the telephone number transmitted by the input device and to use the telephone number to assist in evaluating the risk of a financial transaction; computer memory, accessible by the computer processor, wherein the computer memory stores a record of information indicative of the validity or non-validity of a telephone number offered in association with the financial transaction, and wherein the computer processor uses the information in the record, at least in part, to evaluate the risk of the financial transaction; and a display apparatus configured to communicate to a clerk associated with the financial transaction an indication of the computer processor's evaluation of the risk of the financial transaction.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the record of information comprises information about prior validity determinations for telephone numbers.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the record of information comprises information about telephone numbers that were determined to be valid.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the record of information comprises information about telephone numbers that were determined to be non-valid.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the record of information comprises information about telephone numbers that were determined to be valid and information about telephone numbers that were determined to be non-valid.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the record of information comprises information about the telephone number and about the date of the prior validity determination.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the prior validity determination takes place when a telephone number is called and when the validity of the telephone number is determined based at least in part on a tone emitted in response to the call.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the record of information comprises information that associates telephone number area codes with telephone number prefixes.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the record of information comprises information that associates telephone number area codes with postal zip codes.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the record of information comprises information that associates telephone number area codes, telephone number prefixes, and postal zip codes.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is configured to operate in conjunction with an online purchase, and wherein the input device is further configured to accept and to transmit address information offered by the entity, and wherein the computer processor is further configured to use the address information, at least in part, to evaluate the risk of the online purchase.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an imaging device configured to capture an image of a promissory payment offered in association with the financial transaction, wherein the computer processor is further configured to extract address information from the image for use in evaluating the risk of the transaction.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a telephone connection accessible by the computer processor for dialing the telephone number if the stored information is not sufficiently current.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the stored information is not sufficiently current if more than a threshold period of time has elapsed since the information was last updated.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the threshold period of time is six months.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the threshold period of time is one year.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a telephone connection accessible by the computer processor for dialing the telephone number if the stored information suggests, but does not confirm, that the telephone number is valid.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a telephone connection accessible by the computer processor for dialing the telephone number if the stored information suggests, but does not confirm, that the telephone number is non-valid.
- 19. A computer-implemented method for using a point of sale device to determine if a telephone number provided in association with a financial transaction is a valid number, the method comprising the acts of:
receiving from a point of sale device input indicative of a telephone number from an entity participating in a financial transaction; accessing with a computer, stored information associated with the telephone number that is indicative of whether the telephone number is a valid number; determining, based at least in part on the stored information, whether the telephone number is a valid number; and making the results of the determination available to an operator of the point of sale device.
- 20. The method of claim 19, wherein the entity is a customer.
- 21. The method of claim 19, wherein accessing stored information with a computer comprises accessing information that helps to verify the entity's association with the telephone number.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein accessing stored information comprises accessing information that associates telephone numbers with entity names.
- 23. The method of claim 21, wherein accessing stored information comprises accessing information that associates telephone numbers with entity identifiers.
- 24. The method of claim 21, wherein accessing stored information comprises accessing information that associates telephone numbers with entity bank account identifiers.
- 25. The method of claim 19, wherein determining, based at least in part on the stored information, whether the telephone number is a valid number comprises accessing the stored information and dialing the telephone number if the stored information suggests, but does not confirm, the validity or non-validity of the telephone number.
- 26. The method of claim 19, wherein determining whether the telephone number is a valid number comprises accessing the stored information and dialing the telephone number if the stored information is not sufficient to confirm the validity or non-validity of the telephone number.
- 27. A computer-implemented method for determining if a telephone number provided in association with a financial transaction is a valid number, and for evaluating the risk associated with the financial transaction, based at least in part on the determination, the method comprising the acts of:
receiving input indicative of a telephone number from an entity participating in a financial transaction; accessing stored information associated with the telephone number that is indicative of whether the telephone number is a valid number; and evaluating the risk of the financial transaction, based at least in part on whether the telephone number is a valid number.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein accessing stored information comprises accessing information that is stored locally to the processor.
- 29. The method of claim 27, wherein accessing stored information comprises accessing information that is stored remotely from the processor.
- 30. A system for evaluating risk associated with a financial transaction, based at least in part on a determination of whether a telephone number provided in association with the financial transaction is a valid number, the system comprising:
means for receiving input indicative of a telephone number from an entity participating in a financial transaction; means for accessing stored information indicative of whether the telephone number is a valid number; and means for evaluating risk associated with the financial transaction, based at least in part on the accessed information.
- 31. A computer storage medium having instructions encoded thereon for determining whether a telephone number provided in association with a financial transaction is a valid number, and for evaluating, based at least in part on the determination, the risk of the financial transaction, the computer storage medium comprising:
a computer encoded instruction for receiving input indicative of a telephone number for an entity participating in a financial transaction; a computer encoded instruction for accessing stored information associated with the telephone number; a computer encoded instruction for determining whether the stored information indicates that the telephone number is a valid number; and a computer encoded instruction for evaluating the risk of the financial transaction, based at least in part on the determination.
- 32. A device for assisting a sales person in assessing the risk of accepting a non-cash payment from an entity at a point of sale for a good or service, the device comprising:
an input component that inputs at least a telephone number provided by the entity; a verification component associated with the input component wherein the verification component verifies the validity of the telephone number; and a display component that displays to the sales person the result of the verification of the validity of the telephone number to the sales person.
- 33. The device of claim 32, wherein the verification component comprises a database that correlates area codes and prefixes and wherein the verification component verifies that the prefix of the telephone number provided by the entity comprises a prefix that is assigned to the area code.
- 34. The device of claim 33, wherein the input component further inputs a postal zip code and wherein the database correlates area codes and prefixes with the zip code to verify that the prefix and the area code of the telephone number provided by the entity comprise a prefix and area code that is assigned to the zip code.
- 35. The device of claim 32, wherein the input component further inputs entity identification information and wherein the verification component associates the entity identification information with the phone number and builds a database of entity information associated with telephone numbers.
- 36. The device of claim 35 wherein the verification component, upon receiving entity information and a telephone number ascertains whether the telephone number has been previously associated with the entity and provides an indication to the display component that the telephone number is not associated with the entity identification information in the database.
- 37. The device of claim 32, wherein the verification component dials the telephone number and recognizes whether a valid telephone number is received.
- 38. The device of claim 32, wherein the input component is implemented in a point of sale device.
- 39. The device of claim 32, wherein the verification component is implemented in a point of sale device.
