Claims
- 1. A system for freezing, thawing, and storing a biopharmaceutical material, said system comprising:a flexible container adapted to receive biopharmaceutical material therein for freezing, thawing, and storing, said container comprising a first substantially trapezoidal portion attached to a second substantially trapezoidal portion; a temperature control unit; and wherein said container is configured to conform to a shape of an interior of said temperature control unit in response to said container being substantially filled with the biopharmaceutical material.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein said first portion and said second portion are connected to each other at a seam and wherein said container is adapted to be longitudinally received in said temperature control unit to cause said seam to be located in a plane substantially perpendicular to at least one lateral wall of said temperature control unit.
- 3. The system of claim 1 further comprising a temperature control unit adapted to receive said container, said temperature control unit comprising a wall, wherein said first portion and said second portion are connected to each other at a seam and wherein said wall comprises a depression to receive said seam to allow said container to substantially conform to a shape of an interior of said temperature control unit.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein said temperature control unit is adapted to receive said container and adapted to control a temperature of the biopharmaceutical material when the biopharmaceutical material is contained in said container in an interior of said temperature control unit.
- 5. The system of claim 4 further comprising a controller for controlling said temperature control unit wherein said controller is controllable by a user.
- 6. A system for freezing, thawing, and storing biopharmaceutical materials comprising:a flexible container adapted to receive a biopharmaceutical material therein for freezing, thawing, and storing, said container being formed of a first substantially flat sheet of flexible material joined together by a seam with a second substantially flat sheet of flexible material, so as to lie substantially flat when empty, said container fully enclosing an interior portion for receiving the biopharmaceutical material; said container being configured to form a three dimensional shape when filled with the biopharmaceutical material, said three dimensional shape having a first side and a second side opposite the first side; a conduit connected to said flexible container, the outside of said container being in fluid communication with said interior portion via said conduit; and a temperature control unit comprising a first surface and a second surface facing said first surface, wherein at least one of said first surface and second surface comprises a heat transfer surface, said temperature control unit configured to receive said flexible container therein, wherein said container conforms to the shape of said interior of said temperature control unit, when said container is filled with the biopharmaceutical material, and said first side and said second side of said container contact said first surface and said second surface of said temperature control unit.
- 7. A system for freezing, thawing, and storing a biopharmaceutical material, said system comprising:a flexible container adapted to receive biopharmaceutical material therein for freezing, thawing, and storing said container configured to conform to a shape of an interior of a temperature control unit, in response to said container being substantially filled with the biopharmaceutical material; and wherein said temperature control unit comprises at least one heat transfer surface and at least one movable wall configured to move relative to said container to compress said container, when said container is placed within said interior of said temperature control unit, to inhibit a clearance between said container and said at least one heat transfer surface.
- 8. The system of claim 7 wherein said container comprises a first portion attached to a second portion and wherein said first portion and said second portion comprise at least one of substantially trapezoidal portions, substantially triangular portions, substantially rectangular portions, substantially parallelepipedic portions, substantially elliptic portions, substantially semicircular portions and substantially parabolic portions.
- 9. The system of claim 7 wherein said container is adapted to form at least one of a prismatic shape, a cylindrical shape, and a conical shape in response to said compressing by said at least one movable wall.
- 10. The system of claim 7 wherein said temperature control unit is adapted to regulate a temperature of the biopharmaceutical material when the biopharmaceutical material is contained in said container in said interior of said temperature control unit.
- 11. The system of claim 10 further comprising a controller for controlling said temperature control unit wherein said controller is controllable by a user.
- 12. The system of claim 7 wherein said flexible container is formed of a first substantially flat sheet of flexible material joined together by a seam with a second substantially flat sheet of flexible material, so as to lie substantially flat when empty.
- 13. The system of claim 7 further comprising a conduit connected to said flexible container, the outside of said container being in fluid communication with an interior of said container via said conduit.
- 14. A system for freezing, thawing, and storing a biopharmaceutical material, said system comprising:a container adapted to receive biopharmaceutical material therein for freezing, thawing, and storing said container configured to conform to a shape of an interior of a temperature control unit, when said container is substantially filled with the biopharmaceutical material; and wherein said container comprises a first portion attached to a second portion and said first portion and said second portion comprise at least one of flat substantially trapezoidal portions, flat substantially triangular portions, flat substantially rectangular portions, flat substantially parallelepipedic portions, flat substantially elliptic portions, and flat substantially parabolic portions.
- 15. A method for freezing, thawing, and storing a biopharmaceutical material, the method comprising:connecting a first flat substantially trapezoidal portion to a second flat substantially trapezoidal portion to form a container configured to contain the biopharmaceutical material and configured to conform to a shape of an interior of a temperature control unit; and locating the container in the interior of the temperature control unit and moving a wall of the interior to compress the container to inhibit a clearance between the container and at least one heat transfer surface of the temperature control unit.
- 16. The method of claim 15 further comprising causing the container to form a prismatic shape by the compressing.
- 17. The method of claim 16 further comprising causing the compressing by moving at least one wall of the temperature control unit.
- 18. The method of claim 15 further comprising at least one of freezing and thawing the biopharmaceutical material in the container in the interior of the temperature control unit.
- 19. A method for freezing, thawing, and storing a biopharmaceutical material, the method comprising:providing a container adapted to contain the biopharmaceutical material for freezing, thawing, and storing; adapting the container to conform to a shape of an interior of a temperature control unit; and moving a wall of the temperature control unit relative to the container to compress the container, when the container is received in the interior of the temperature control unit, to inhibit a clearance between the container and at least one heat transfer surface of the temperature control unit.
- 20. The method of claim 19 further comprising at least one of freezing and thawing the biopharmaceutical material in the container in the interior of the temperature control unit.
- 21. The method of claim 19 further comprising causing the compressing by moving at least one wall of the temperature control unit.
- 22. The method of claim 19 further comprising joining a first substantially flat sheet of flexible material by a seam to a second substantially sheet of flexible material to form the flexible container.
- 23. The method of claim 19 further comprising connecting a conduit to the flexible container to provide fluid communication between the outside of the container and an interior of the container via the conduit.
- 24. A method for freezing, thawing, and storing a biopharmaceutical material, the method comprising:joining a first substantially flat sheet of flexible material by a seam with a second substantially flat sheet of flexible material to form a flexible container adapted to receive a biopharmaceutical material therein for freezing, thawing, and storing; fully enclosing an interior portion of said container for receiving the biopharmaceutical material by the joining of the first substantially flat sheet of flexible material with the second substantially flat sheet of flexible material; forming a three dimensional shape with the container by filling the container with the biopharmaceutical material wherein the three dimensional shape has a first side and a second side opposite the first side; connecting a conduit to the flexible container wherein the outside of the container is in fluid communication with the interior portion via the conduit; and receiving the container in a temperature control unit having a first surface and a second surface facing the first surface, conforming the shape of the container to an interior of the temperature control unit, and contacting the first surface and the second surface of the temperature control unit with the first side and the second side of the container, wherein at least one of the first surface and the second surface comprises a heat transfer surface.

This is a Continuation-In-Part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 09/905,488, filed Jul. 13, 2001, now U.S. Pat. No. 6,453,683 entitled Cryopreservation System with Controlled Dendritic Freezing Front Velocity, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference, which is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 09/863,126 filed May 22, 2001, the disclosure of which is also incorporated herein by reference. Also, this application claims priority from U.S. Provisional application No. 60/334,622, filed Nov. 1, 2001, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
