Application of cosmetics to the face and body can be a challenging process. Cosmetic applicator products often involve wands or applicators that are dipped in cosmetics such as serums, oils, gels, and other liquid or semi-liquid compositions and then applied to the desired region such as eyelashes, eyelids, eyebrows, and nails.
Problematically, the application of cosmetic material to the face including eyelashes, eyelids, eyebrows, lips, as well as other regions of the body such as nails, presents several challenges for users. Such problems range from issues with cross-contamination between the serum reservoir and the cosmetic applicator to the difficulty and inefficiency of use for cosmetic systems utilizing both a serum reservoir and the cosmetic applicator, as well as the risk of prolonged exposure of the serums to atmospheric conditions which may cause oxidation, degradation, evaporation, or other unwanted changes.
Cross-contamination is the physical movement or transfer of harmful bacteria from one person, object, or from one place to another. Preventing cross-contamination is a key factor in preventing illness. The issue can be particularly dangerous with respect to cosmetics as the cosmetic materials are being applied directly to the human face or body, and quite often, near especially vulnerable areas, such as the eyes and nose.
Unfortunately, cosmetics are well-documented mechanisms for the transmission of pathogens in people's daily lives. Most cosmetics, including customized cosmetics, contain an abundant amount of water and nutrients, which in turn, provide an excellent base material for the survival of a variety of microorganisms. The microbial contamination of cosmetics and the survival of microorganisms not only serve to deteriorate the quality of the cosmetics themselves, but more dangerously, place at risk the health of the user. Though health and safety have improved over time, product recalls nevertheless do still occur worldwide due to microbial contamination of the products themselves.
However, even with verified safe or even sterile cosmetic products, it is entirely possible for cross-contamination to introduce dangerous microorganisms such as bacteria from an outside source directly into the previously safe or sterile cosmetic material through ordinary everyday use. Such microorganisms or bacteria may originate from the user or from sharing of the cosmetic amongst multiple users which may result in dangerous microorganisms being introduced into the cosmetic material and then spread to a different person entirely.
What is needed is a means by which to mitigate the possibility of introducing foreign microorganisms and bacteria into the cosmetic material.
The present state of the art may therefore benefit from the systems, methods, and apparatuses for implementing a self-contained cosmetic applicator kit as is described herein.
Embodiments are illustrated by way of example, and not by way of limitation, and will be more fully understood with reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the figures in which:
Described herein are systems, methods, and apparatuses for implementing a self-contained cosmetic applicator kit.
For example, according to one embodiment there is a cosmetic applicator kit including: a body, in which the body includes: a reservoir portion, in which the reservoir portion is to receive cosmetic material to be applied; an applicator storage recess to receive an applicator cap over a topmost end to seal the applicator storage recess; in which the applicator storage recess is to further receive an applicator comprising an applicator brush-head and an applicator body, in which the applicator brush-head is to receive the cosmetic material to be applied; a cosmetic material transfer compartment (“compartment”) to receive the cosmetic material to be applied, in which the compartment is to receive the applicator brush-head for transfer of the cosmetic material to be applied; a side door adjacent to the cosmetic material transfer compartment, in which the side door opens to provide access to the cosmetic material transfer compartment; a valve portion between the reservoir portion to the receiving compartment portion; and a pump having a top portion above the reservoir portion, in which the top portion of the pump activates to transport the cosmetic material from the reservoir portion into the cosmetic material transfer compartment through the valve portion; and a pump cap to seal over the pump.
Described embodiments overcome the various shortcomings of presently available cosmetic applicator products on the market today through an improved storage and structural design and novel use for the application of cosmetic serums onto the face or body.
For instance, where prior cosmetic applicators must be dipped into an external reservoir of material to be applied, and thus increases the risk of contamination to both the serum reservoir and its material as well as the target surface with microbes as the applicator is frequently transferred between the external reservoir and the target region of application on a recipient's face or body with each use, practice and use of the self-contained cosmetic applicator kit as described herein overcomes these problems as there is no opportunity for cross-contamination between an internal reservoir and the applicator of the self-contained cosmetic applicator kit which comes into contact with the user's face or body due to the advantage of having a valve portion and receiving compartment portion within the body of the cosmetic applicator kit.
Similarly, prior cosmetic applicators require transferring of the serum material to be applied to the user's face or body via a process that can be messy and inefficient, with material dripping or spraying along the way or being applied by accident before being positioned in the target region.
Cosmetic applicators on the market today simply do not accommodate for clean and easy use. Especially problematic with prior known solutions is the need to transfer cosmetic material such as serums or oils onto applicators such as wands before application. This is often done via droppers or by directly pouring the cosmetic material onto the applicator, which can create a mess and damage surrounding surfaces where the transfer occurs, such as a vanity surface or a bathroom sink.
Further still, prior cosmetic applicators result in the unnecessary and prolonged exposure of the serum material to atmospheric elements that can result in oxidative deterioration and decreased shelf life of the material to be applied. Exposure to atmospheric elements occurs when cosmetic containers are repetitively opened and closed, as occurs with each use of such prior cosmetic applicators and associated serums.
A cosmetic applicator kit is thus described herein which may be utilized with the application of cosmetic or other material to a recipient's face or body, yet aids the user by avoiding the common problems with cosmetic applicators on the market discussed above. Such a cosmetic applicator kit is notably distinct from conventional cosmetic applicators given its ability to apply cosmetic material to a target region directly. Furthermore, the cosmetic applicator kit described herein has a sealed internal reservoir to receive cosmetic material to be applied, which allows for greater protection of the material from contamination, oxidative deterioration, and unwanted dispersion. Also distinct is the present cosmetic applicator kit's cosmetic material transfer compartment portion allowing a transfer mechanism for reservoir material onto an applicator brush-head in a hygienic environment involving controlled forward release of cosmetic material from the reservoir compartment portion, and as will be described in greater detail below.
In certain embodiments, the material to be cosmetically applied is pre-loaded into the reservoir of the cosmetic applicator kit, thus making the cosmetic applicator kit disposable after use and eliminating the need to fill the applicator device manually.
In other embodiments, the reservoir of the applicator kit comes pre-filled with material to be applied but may be refilled by the user. In yet other embodiments, the material to be applied must be obtained separately and manually loaded by a user. In such embodiments requiring manual filling of the reservoir, a portion of the body of the kit may be detached to access and fill the reservoir with the relevant material. Once the reservoir is filled, the body of the kit may be sealed again by re-affixing the detached portion of the body.
According to certain embodiments, the self-contained cosmetic applicator kit provides for easy sanitation as it can be washed in a dishwasher or cleaned in a readily commercially available sanitizing solution specifically for cleaning cosmetic applicators and cosmetic accessories, or other instruments designed to be used on the human body and face. Specifically, the applicator may be removed for cleaning, the applicator storage recess may be accessed for cleaning by removing the applicator cap, and the cosmetic material transfer compartment may be accessed for cleaning by opening the sliding door. In other embodiments, the self-contained cosmetic applicator kit is manufactured and distributed in a sealed and self-contained package which is disposable after the internal contents (e.g., such as the cosmetic material to be applied including serum) are exhausted, and thus, the applicator kit does not require at home sanitizing as it is simply discarded. In such embodiments, the applicator kit may employ a tamper-proof design to discourage unintended refilling of the reservoir portion and re-use by consumers.
According to other embodiments, the cosmetic applicator kit has cosmetic applications beyond eyelash, eyebrow, and periorbital regions. For example, this cosmetic applicator device may provide solutions for the many possible applications of cosmetics to other parts of the face and body, such as touching up grey hair with hair color or highlighting hair by individuals or cosmetologists and skincare involving applying creams and moisturizers, as well as application to the nails of the hands and feet.
According to still other embodiments, the cosmetic applicator kit has applications beyond cosmetic use and may be used, for example, in the healthcare setting, such as for medical and perioperative procedures involving, for example, the application of topical anesthetics such as lidocaine, marking human anatomy, or sterilizing regions of the face or body.
In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth such as examples of specific configurations, use cases, materials, components, etc., in order to provide a thorough understanding of the various embodiments. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art that these specific details need not be employed to practice the embodiments disclosed herein. In other instances, well-known materials or methods have not been described in detail in order to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the disclosed embodiments.
In addition to various hardware components depicted in the figures and described herein, embodiments further include various operations described below. The operations described in accordance with such embodiments may be performed by specially manufactured components or may utilize general-purpose components in certain instances to realize and perform the innovative function and configuration of the described embodiments. Alternatively, the operations may be performed by a combination of customized specially manufactured components with certain general-purpose components to make, use, and practice the inventive aspects as set forth herein.

As shown here, there is a sliding door 201A and 201B between right lateral wall 102 and left lateral wall 103 of the cosmetic applicator kit 200, in a closed configuration to seal cosmetic material within a transfer compartment 205. As shown here, the door 201A on the left diagram is in a closed position, thus sealing off the transfer compartment 205, whereas the door 201B on the right diagram is in an open position, thus permitting access to a cosmetic material within the transfer compartment 205.
According to certain embodiments, sliding door 201A and 201B may sit in channels between right lateral wall 102 and left lateral wall 103 of the cosmetic applicator kit 200 and slide up and down along the channels to open and close, thus exposing and closing cosmetic material transfer compartment 205 respectively.
Varying types of pumps or expressing mechanisms may be utilized to force the cosmetic material which is held within the cosmetic storage reservoir through a one-way valve and into the cosmetic material transfer compartment 305. For instance, as is depicted here at element 302, a twisting “pump” or “plunger” mechanism may be utilized to induce a pushing force or mechanical pushing pressure into the cosmetic material within the cosmetic storage reservoir and thus, force the cosmetic material through a one-way valve and into the cosmetic material transfer compartment 305. Alternatively, a pump having an up and down travel function may be utilized to induce pressure into the cosmetic storage reservoir and to thus force the cosmetic material through a one-way valve and into the cosmetic material transfer compartment 305. Similarly, a compressed gas could be utilized which when activated by the pump release, the compressed gas would then flow into the cosmetic storage reservoir and thus force the cosmetic material through a one-way valve and into the cosmetic material transfer compartment 305 through the aid of the air pressure released into the reservoir.
Additionally depicted here, is the pump cap 301 which may be removed from, or placed over to seal, pump 302 or more specifically the actuator mechanism of the pump 302, which in this example is a twist-plunger mechanism. Applicator 306 represents the entirety of the applicator brush-head 309, body 308, and cap 307, which, as is shown here, may be removed from, or placed into applicator storage recess 303. Applicator cap 307 fits over the topmost portion of applicator storage recess 303 to seal applicator storage recess 303. According to certain embodiments, applicator cap 307 may be continuous with applicator body 308 and applicator brush-head 309 to form applicator 306. According to yet other embodiments, applicator cap 307 may be a separate component and applicator 306 may include at least or only applicator body 308 and applicator brush-head 309.
As further shown here, the right and lateral edges of sliding door 304 may be moved upwards along channels in each of right lateral wall 102 and left lateral wall 103 of the body of cosmetic applicator kit 300, in order to open and seal cosmetic material transfer compartment 305.
As shown by
As before, the pump 402 is again depicted here, and with the applicator door 405 in an open position, the pump (e.g., whether twist-plunger, press pump, air pressure pump, etc.) is then activated to release cosmetic material to be applied from the cosmetic storage reservoir and onto the applicator 406 and specifically onto the brush-head (see element 309 of
According to certain embodiments, applicator 406 may be rotated or moved forwards and backwards 407 for a more effective transfer of the cosmetic material to be applied onto applicator brush-head (see element 309 of
Applicator 406 may then be removed with the cosmetic material to be applied on applicator brush-head (see element 309 of
According to certain embodiments, applicator brush-head (see element 309), applicator 406, applicator storage recess 403, and cosmetic material transfer compartment 405 may be exposed for cleaning before and/or after use of cosmetic applicator kit 400. According to certain embodiments, applicator storage recess 403 and cosmetic material transfer compartment 405 may be flushed with liquids, detergents, and air for cleaning, or may be scoured with fabrics, cloth, or wipes. Likewise, applicator 406 may be cleaned with liquids or textiles and/or air-dried.
