Claims
- 1. A tape printing device for printing data on a tape, said tape printing device comprising;
- input means for inputting print data;
- printing length calculation means for calculating a printing length of said input print data;
- margin setting means for setting at least a margin in a direction along a length of said tape;
- tape length calculation means for adding a length of said margin to said calculated printing length of said print data to determine a calculated tape length;
- tape length input means for enabling a user to input a desired tape length;
- print mode specification means for selecting either a first print mode in which printing is carried out based on said input desired tape length, or a second print mode in which printing is carried out based on said calculated tape length; and
- print means for printing said print data on said tape in said selected print mode.
- 2. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 1 further comprising:
- data arrangement setting means, wherein when said first print mode is selected said data arrangement setting means specifies an arrangement of said input print data on said tape having said desired tape length.
- 3. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 2 wherein said data arrangement setting means determines whether said print data is arranged closer to the leading portion of said desired tape length, is arranged on a substantial center of said desired tape length, or is arranged closer to the trailing portion of said desired tape length.
- 4. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said margin setting means independently sets a length of a front margin which is closer to the leading portion of said tape, and sets a length of a rear margin which is closer to the trailing portion of said tape.
- 5. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 4 wherein said tape length calculation means calculates said calculated tape length as a sum of said printing length of said print data, said length of the front margin, and said length of the rear margin.
- 6. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 4 wherein said margin setting means independently provides a plurality of choices for said length of the front margin and a plurality of choices for said length of the rear margin, and independently selects an adequate length for said front margin and an adequate length for said rear margin.
- 7. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said margin setting means includes:
- margin specification means for setting said margin based on a relative term including standard, smaller, or greater.
- 8. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 7 wherein said margin setting means includes:
- absolute margin length cal culation means for calculating an absolute length of said margin based on the setting by said margin specification means.
- 9. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 8 wherein said absolute margin length calculation means calculates said absolute length of the margin based on a width of said tape.
- 10. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 7 further comprising:
- printing start instruction means for providing an instruction to start printing; and
- means for calculating an absolute length of said margin based on the setting by said margin specification means and for causing said tape length calculation means to calculate said calculated tape length from said absolute length of said margin in response to said instruction to start printing.
- 11. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 2 further comprising:
- a display unit that enables the arrangement of said print data to be displayed when said data arrangement setting means specifies the arrangement of said print data.
- 12. A tape printing device for printing data on a tape, said tape printing device comprising;
- an input unit by which a user enters print data, enters a desired tape length, and selects either a first print mode in which printing is carried out based on said input desired tape length, or a second print mode in which printing is carried out based on a calculated tape length;
- a margin setting key by which a user sets at least a margin in a direction along a length of said tape;
- a control unit arranged to calculate a printing length of said input print data, and being further arranged to add a length of said margin to said calculated printing length of said print data to determine said calculated tape length; and
- an output unit arranged to print said print data on said tape in said selected print mode.
- 13. A tape printing device in accordance with claim 12 wherein said input unit is further arranged to specify an arrangement of said input print data on said tape when said first print mode is selected.
- 14. A method of printing data on a tape in a tape printing device, said method comprising;
- inputting print data;
- inputting a desired tape length;
- calculating a printing length of said input print data;
- setting at least a margin in a direction along a length of said tape;
- adding a length of said margin to said calculated printing length of said print data to determine a calculated tape length;
- selecting either a first print mode in which printing is carried out based on said input desired tape length, or a second print mode in which printing is carried out based on said calculated tape length; and
- printing said print data on said tape in said selected print mode.
- 15. A method in accordance with claim 14 further comprising:
- specifying an arrangement of said input print data on said tape when said first print mode is selected.
