Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming a three-dimensional object on a substantially cross-section-by-cross-section basis including formation of a removable support structure, comprising:
- at least one container for containing a building material which is normally in a solid state and which is made flowable when maintained at or above a first flowable temperature, and for containing a support material which is normally in a solid state and which is made flowable when maintained at or above a second flowable temperature;
- a building chamber maintained at a temperature below at least the first flowable temperature;
- at least one computer programmed to identify, for at least one cross-section, object locations which comprise the object and support locations which are exclusive of the object and to transmit positioning control signals for the at least one cross-section;
- at least one heater for maintaining the building material and the support material at a temperature at or above the respective first and second flowable temperatures thereby forming flowable building material and flowable support material;
- at least one dispenser coupled to the at least one container, and responsive to the positioning control signals, and adapted to selectively dispense the flowable building and support materials into the building chamber in accordance with the positioning control signals; and
- wherein the positioning control signals position the at least one dispenser to selectively dispense flowable building material at at least some object locations, and position the at least one dispenser to selectively dispense flowable support material at only a portion of the support locations.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the dispenser is configured to dispense one of the flowable support material and the flowable building material as a flow of material.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the dispenser is configured to dispense both the flowable building material and the flowable support material as flows of material.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the computer is programmed to transmit positioning control signals to form at least a portion of the support structure in long and slender cross-sectional elements.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the building chamber is configured to be maintained at a temperature below both the first and the second flowable temperatures.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 further comprising a second container for containing the support material, the at least one dispenser being coupled to the first and second containers.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a moveable platform and wherein at least a portion of the support locations are located below object locations on a successive cross-section.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the at least one computer is further programmed to additionally identify, for at least one cross-section, supported object portions which are supported by a previous cross-section and unsupported object portions which are unsupported by a previous cross-section, the computer being further programmed to additionally transmit positioning control signals to the at least one dispenser such that building material is dispensed from a supported object portion to an unsupported object portion so that intercross-sectional horizontal adhesion of successively dispensed quantities of building material is used to at least partially support vertically unsupported regions of the cross-section.
- 9. A method for forming a three-dimensional object on a substantially cross-section-by-cross-section basis including formation of a removable support structure, comprising the steps:
- containing at least one building material which is normally in a solid state and which is made flowable when maintained at or above a first flowable temperature, and at least one support material which is normally in a solid state and which is made flowable when maintained at or above a second flowable temperature;
- maintaining a building chamber at a temperature below at least the first flowable temperature;
- maintaining the building material and the support material at a temperature at or above the respective first and second flowable temperatures thereby forming flowable building material and flowable support material;
- identifying for at least one cross-section, object locations which comprise the object and the support locations which are exclusive of the object;
- transmitting positioning control signals of the identified object locations for the at least one cross-section;
- relatively positioning the at least one dispenser in accordance with the transmitted positioning control signals to allow selective dispensing of the flowable building material at object locations, and allow selective dispensing of flowable support material at only a portion of the support locations; and
- selectively dispensing the flowable building material and the flowable support material, through the at least one dispenser, into the building chamber in accordance with the transmitted positioning control signals.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of selectively dispensing further comprises dispensing at least one of the flowable support material and the flowable building material as a flow of material.
- 11. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of selectively dispensing further comprises dispensing both the flowable building material and the flowable support material as flows of material.
- 12. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of maintaining a building chamber comprises maintaining the building chamber temperature below both the first and the second flowable temperatures.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of containing additionally comprises separately containing the building material and the support material.
- 14. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of identifying comprises identifying support locations which are below object locations on a successive cross-section.
- 15. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of identifying additionally comprises identifying for at least one cross-section, supported object portions which are supported by a previous cross-section and unsupported object portions which are unsupported by a previous cross-section.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein the step of transmitting additionally comprises transmitting positioning control signals to the at least one dispenser such that building material is dispensed from a supported object portion to an unsupported object portion so that intercross-sectional horizontal adhesion of successively dispensed quantities of building material is used to at least partially support vertically unsupported regions of the cross-section.
