Claims
- 1. A crosslinkable coating composition comprising a mixture of:
- a. a di or polyhydroxy functional polymeric component selected from the group consisting of a polyester resin, a diester of an organic diol and an organic dicarboxylic acid, an alkyd resin, an acrylic resin and a polycarbonate resin, said polymeric component further characterized as having a number average molecular weight within the range of about 200 to about 20,000;
- b. a bis-aromatic polyhydric phenol having the structure: ##STR14## wherein X is a divalent organic radical having a molecular weight of less than 400, and wherein Y is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, C1 to C4 alkyl and C1 to C4 alkoxy; and
- c. a methylol (alkoxymethyl) amino crosslinking agent present in an amount effective to crosslink the composition.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polyhydric phenol is present in said composition at a level of from about 1 to about 60% by weight based on the combined weight of said polymer and amino crosslinking agent taken together.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein said polyhydric phenol is present at a level of from about 5 to about 35% by weight, based on the combined weight of said polymer and an amino crosslinking agent taken together.
- 4. The composition of claim 2 wherein said polyhydric phenol is phenolphthalein.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polymeric component has a number average molecular weight within the range of about 200 to about 10,000.
- 6. The composition of claim 2 wherein X is a divalent radical having the formula ##STR15## wherein R.sub.1 is a divalent organic radical containing from 2 to about 20 carbon atoms.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 wherein said polyhydric phenol is the diester reaction product of neopentyl glycol and para hydroxy benzoic acid.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polymeric component is a diester or polyester polymer having the structure: ##STR16## wherein n is 0 or an integer ranging from 1 to about 40, R.sub.2 is a divalent aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical containing from 2 to about 40 carbon atoms or a mixture of such radicals, and R.sub.3 is a divalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic radical, containing from 2 to about 40 carbon atoms, or a mixture of such radicals.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein n is 0.
- 10. The composition of claim 8 wherein n ranges from 1 to about 40.
- 11. The composition of claim 8 wherein said polymeric component is an alkyd resin.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein said polymeric component is a polycarbonate polymer having the structure: ##STR17## wherein q is an integer ranging from 1 to about 40, n is an integer ranging from 0 to 40, and R.sub.2 is a divalent aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radical containing from 2 to about 40 carbon atoms or a mixture of such radicals and R.sub.3 is a divalent aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical containing from 2 to about 40 carbon atoms, or a mixture of such radicals.
- 13. The composition of claim 9 wherein said diester is the condensation product of neopentyl glycol and adipic acid present in a respective molar ratio of about 2 to 1.
- 14. The composition of claim 10 wherein said polyester is the condensation product of neopentyl glycol and adipic acid, present at a respective molar ratio of p+1 to p wherein p is the number of moles of adipic acid.
- 15. The composition of claim 2 wherein said methylol (alkoxymethyl) amino crosslinking agent is present at a level of from about 3 to about 50 percent by weight, based on the combined weight of crosslinking agent and crosslinkable polymer components.
- 16. The composition of claim 15 wherein said amino crosslinking agent is hexamethoxymethyl melamine.
- 17. The composition of claim 2 wherein the number average molecular weight of said polymeric component is within the range of from about 200 to about 6,000.
- 18. The composition of claim 17 wherein said number average molecular weight ranges from about 200 to about 3,000.
- 19. The composition of claim 2 further containing an organic solvent.
- 20. The composition of claim 2 wherein Y in said bis-aromatic polyhydric phenol is hydrogen and the hydroxy groups are at the 4,4' positions.
