Claims
- 1. In a tire inspection apparatus of the type having drive means for delivering and positioning a tire at an inspection station, an inspection apparatus having a movable penetrative emanation source for emitting penetrative emanation along a path, and a movable penetrative emanation detector, first and second motive structures for moving said source and detector, the improvement of a positioning system comprising:
- (a) sensing means for producing signals indicating the positions of said source and said detector;
- (b) positioning means connected between said sensing apparatus and said first and second motive structures and being responsive to said position indicating signals to compare the relative positions of said source and detector to produce output signals to said first and second motive structures to effect the maintenance of a substantially constant spatial relation between said source and said detector.
- 2. The system of claim 1, further comprising:
- (a) structure supporting said detector for movement along an arcuate travel path;
- (b) structure supporting said source for pivotal movement about an axis perpendicular to the plane containing said arcuate path;
- (c) said positioning means being responsive to the pivoting of said source relative to move said detector along said arcuate path to maintain said detector substantially in the path of penetrative emanation from said source.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein:
- (a) said source and said detector are independently supported for movement along parallel paths; and
- (b) said positioning means includes means for actuating one of said motive structures to move one of said detector and source in response to movement of the other to maintain a predetermined distance between said source and said detector.
- 4. The system of claim 3, wherein said predetermined distance is that distance at which the center of said arcuate path is located substantially at the emission point of said source.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein:
- (a) said source and said detector are independently supported for movement along parallel paths toward and away from each other; and,
- (b) said positioning means includes means for actuating one of said motive structures to move one of said detector and said source in response to movement of the other in said same direction to maintain predetermined distance between said source and said detector.
- 6. A method of cooperatively positioning a penetrative emanation source and a penetrative emanation detector for a tire inspection apparatus, said source and detector being independently movable and connected to first and second motive structures, respectively, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) sensing the relative positions of said source and said detector;
- (b) comparing the relative positions of said source and said detector; and,
- (c) actuating said motive structures in response to said comparison to effect the maintenance of a substantially constant spatial relation between said source and said detector, notwithstanding the movement of one of said source and said detector.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein said detector is movable along an arcuate travel path and said source is pivotally movable about an axis perpendicular to a plane containing said arcuate travel path, and said actuating step includes maintaining a constant relative rotational orientation between said detector and said source.
- 8. The method of claim 6, wherein said source and said detector are independently movable along parallel paths, and said actuating step includes maintaining a predetermined spacing between said source and said detector with respect to movement along said parallel paths.
