Claims
- 1. A plurality of separate particles each comprising a core and a plurality of fibrous extensions therefrom, the core and extensions consisting essentially of the same material wherein the material comprises a thermoplastic polymer and at least one other component dispersed therein.
- 2. A plurality of particles according to claim 1 wherein the particles are physically interlinked by the extensions of the particles.
- 3. A plurality of particles according to claim 1 wherein said at least one other component comprises at least one pigment.
- 4. A plurality of particles according to claim 1 wherein said at least one other component comprises a colored material.
- 5. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 4 wherein the colored material comprises a finely divided ferromagnetic material.
- 6. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 4 wherein the colored material comprises carbon black.
- 7. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein said at least one other component comprises silica.
- 8. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic polymer comprises a plurality of different thermoplastic polymers.
- 9. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein each particle has a diameter of between 0.1 and 5 micrometers.
- 10. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is substantially insoluble in a nonpolar liquid at temperatures below 40.degree. C.
- 11. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 10 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is solvatable in the nonpolar liquid at temperatures above a given temperature and wherein the given temperature is greater than 50.degree. C.
- 12. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 11 wherein the given temperature is in the range from about 65.degree. C., to 100.degree. C.
- 13. A separate particle according to claim 1 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethyl vinyl acetate copolymer.
- 14. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the polymer material comprises an isotactic polypropylene.
- 15. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the polymer material comprises a polybutyl terethalate.
- 16. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethylene ethyl acrylate.
- 17. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethylene vinyl acetate.
- 18. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the polymer material comprises a methacrylate.
- 19. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethylene copolymer.
- 20. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 19 wherein the ethylene copolymer has a carboxylic acid functionality and an acid number between about 54 and 90.
- 21. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the fibers are adapted to mat with like fibers of other like particles during development of an image with a liquid developer comprising the particles and a non-polar liquid.
- 22. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 1 wherein the particles are adapted for charging with an electrostatic charge of a predetermined polarity.
- 23. A plurality of separate particles according to claim 22 wherein the particles are adapted for charging with an electrostatic charge of a predetermined polarity by the addition of a charge director compound and a non-polar liquid.
- 24. A toner particle useful for developing a latent electrostatic image, the particle comprising a core and a plurality of fibrous extensions therefrom, the core and extensions consisting essentially of the same material wherein the material comprises a thermoplastic polymer and at least one other component.
- 25. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein said at least one other component comprises at least one pigment.
- 26. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein said at least one other component comprises a colored material.
- 27. A toner particle according to claim 26 wherein the colored material comprises a finely divided ferromagnetic material.
- 28. A toner particle according to claim 26 wherein the colored material comprises carbon black.
- 29. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein said at least one other component comprises silica.
- 30. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the thermoplastic polymer comprises a plurality of different thermoplastic polymers.
- 31. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein each particle has a diameter of between 0.1 and 5 micrometers.
- 32. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is substantially insoluble in a nonpolar liquid at temperatures below 40.degree. C.
- 33. A toner particle according to claim 32 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is solvatable in the nonpolar liquid at temperatures above a given temperature and wherein the given temperature is greater than 50.degree. C.
- 34. A toner particle according to claim 33 wherein the given temperature is in the range from about 65.degree. C., to 100.degree. C.
- 35. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethyl vinyl acetate copolymer.
- 36. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the polymer material comprises an isotactic polypropylene.
- 37. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the polymer material comprises a polybutyl terethalate.
- 38. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethylene ethyl acrylate.
- 39. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethylene vinyl acetate.
- 40. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the polymer material comprises a methacrylate.
- 41. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethylene copolymer.
- 42. A toner particle according to claim 41 wherein the ethylene copolymer has a carboxylic acid functionality and an acid number between about 54 and 90.
- 43. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the fibers are adapted to mat with like fibers of other like particles during development of an image with a liquid developer comprising the particles and a non-polar liquid.
- 44. A toner particle according to claim 24 wherein the particle is adapted for charging with an electrostatic charge of a predetermined polarity.
- 45. A toner particle according to claim 44 wherein the particle is adapted for charging with an electrostatic charge of a predetermined polarity by the addition of a charge director compound and a non-polar liquid.
- 46. A toner particle useful for developing a latent electrostatic image by electrophoretic movement of the particles through a non-polar liquid, the particle comprising a core and plurality of fiberous extensions therefrom, the core and the fibrous extensions consisting essentially of the same material wherein the material comprises a thermoplastic polymer and at least one other component.
- 47. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein said at least one other component comprises at least one pigment.
- 48. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein said at least one other component comprises a colored material.
- 49. A toner particle according to claim 48 wherein the colored material comprises a finely divided ferromagnetic material.
- 50. A toner particle according to claim 48 wherein the colored material comprises carbon black.
- 51. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein said at least one other component comprises silica.
- 52. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein the thermoplastic polymer comprises a plurality of different thermoplastic polymers.
- 53. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein each particle has a diameter of between 0.1 and 5 micrometers.
- 54. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is substantially insoluble in a nonpolar liquid at temperatures below 40.degree. C.
- 55. A toner particle according to claim 54 wherein the thermoplastic polymer is solvatable in the nonpolar liquid at temperatures above a given temperature and wherein the given temperature is greater than 50.degree. C.
- 56. A toner particle according to claim 55 wherein the given temperature is in the range from about 65.degree. C., to 100.degree. C.
- 57. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethyl vinyl acetate copolymer.
- 58. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein the polymer material comprises an isotactic polypropylene.
- 59. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein the polymer material comprises a polybutyl terethalate.
- 60. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein the polymer material comprises an ethylene ethyl acrylate.

- 65. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein the fibers are adapted to mat with like fibers of other like particles during development of an image with a liquid developer comprising the particles and a non-polar liquid.
- 66. A toner particle according to claim 46 wherein the particle is adapted for charging with an electrostatic charge of a predetermined polarity.
- 67. A toner particle according to claim 66 wherein the particle is adapted for charging with an electrostatic charge of a predetermined polarity by the addition of a charge director compound and a non-polar liquid.
- 68. A mixture comprising a liquid having a plurality of particles according to claim 1 dispersed therein.
- 69. A mixture comprising a liquid having a plurality of particles according to claim 3 dispersed therein.
- 70. A mixture comprising a liquid having a plurality of particles according to claim 24 dispersed therein.
