Claims
- 1. In the leaching of aluminum from aluminum-diffused nickel or iron with aqueous caustic, the improvement according to which the aqueous caustic also contains from about 0.1% to about 3% hydrogen peroxide by weight.
- 2. The leaching process of claim 1 in which iron is the metal leached, and the caustic further contains dissolved tin ions.
- 3. The leaching process of claim 2 in which, after the leaching, the leached metal is treated with weak acid to further increase its pyrophoric output.
- 4. The leaching process of claim 1 in which the metal leached is a foil between about 1 and about six mils thick and after the leaching the foil is folded to further increase its high temperature dwell at least about 60%.
- 5. In the process of preparing pyrophoric aluminide by preparing precursor aluminide on a supporting web, and then leaching those particles, the improvement according to which the particles on the web are compacted at a temperature above about 400.degree. C. to essentially fill all voids.
- 6. The process for preparing pyrophoric iron by providing unmelted Raney type iron-aluminum alloy, and then leaching the alloy to dissolve out most of the aluminum and thus leave an activated iron.
- 7. The process of claim 6 in which the unmelted alloy is in the form of particles not over about 100 microns in size.
- 8. The process of claim 7 in which the unmelted alloy is provided by the low temperature diffusion aluminizing of iron particles.
- 9. The process of claim 6 in which the leaching is effected with an aqueous caustic containing dissolved tin.
