Claims
- 1. A flat-bed scanner for scanning an original document to obtain a digitized representation of said original document, comprising:a scan carriage movably disposed for linear motion along a scanning axis; and a converging device, enclosed within said scan carriage, for converging an optical pathway comprising a scan line of said original document onto an image sensor, said converging device including at least a first and a second optical lens and a drive device for moving either said first or said second optical lens into said optical pathway.
- 2. The flat-bed scanner according to claim 1, wherein said drive device automatically moves either said first or said second optical lens closer to or further from said image sensor for automatically focusing said original document onto said image sensor.
- 3. The flat-bed scanner according to claim 1, wherein said flat-bed scanner further comprises a stationary reflective object focal plane for supporting a reflective original document and a stationary transmissive object focal plane disposed substantially parallel to and at a vertical distance below said stationary reflective object focal plane for supporting a transmissive original document.
- 4. The flat-bed scanner according to claim 1, wherein said first lens is a lower-resolution lens than said second lens.
- 5. The flat-bed scanner according to claim 1, wherein said first and said second lenses are fixedly mounted to a lens carriage, said lens carriage being slideably mounted on a mounting carriage, said mounting carriage being slidably mounted on said scan carriage.
- 6. The flat-bed scanner according to claim 5, further comprising a pin fixedly mounted to said scan carriage for engaging and causing movement of said lens carriage relative to said scan carriage.
- 7. The flat-bed scanner according to claim 6, wherein said lens carriage includes a groove for engaging said pin and causing said movement of said lens carriage.
- 8. The flat-bed scanner according to claim 7, wherein said groove is disposed in said lens carriage at an oblique angle relative to a direction substantially parallel to said optical pathway.
- 9. The flat-bed scanner according to claim 8, further comprising a lead screw threadedly engaged with said mounting carriage wherein said drive device rotates said lead screw for moving said mounting carriage in a direction substantially parallel relative to said optical pathway, said pin causing said lens carriage to move said first or said second optical lens into said optical pathway.
- 10. The flat-bed scanner according to claim 9, wherein said groove includes a first and a second end, said first and said second end being substantially parallel to said optical pathway for engaging said pin and allowing said lens carriage to move substantially parallel to said optical pathway for focusing said original document onto said image sensor.
- 11. A flat-bed scanner for scanning an original document to obtain a digitized representation of said original document, comprising:a stationary reflective object focal plane for supporting a reflective original document and a stationary transmissive object focal plane disposed substantially parallel to and at a vertical distance below said stationary reflective object focal plane for supporting a transmissive original document; a scan carriage movably disposed for linear motion along a scanning axis; and a converging device, enclosed within said scan carriage, for converging an optical pathway comprising a scan line of said original document onto an image sensor, said converging device including at least a first and a second optical lens and a drive device for moving either said first or said second optical lens into said optical pathway.
- 12. A method for scanning an original document to obtain a digitized representation of said original document, comprising the steps of:advancing a scan carriage along a scanning axis, said scan carriage including a converging device for imaging an object comprising a scan line of said original document onto an image sensor said converging device comprising an optical pathway substantially comprising an optical axis passing between the scan line and the image sensor and at least a first optical lens and a second optical lens enclosed therein; and, moving one of said first optical lens or said second optical lens into the optical pathway.
- 13. The method according to claim 12 wherein said first optical lens has a first focal length and said second optical lens has a second focal length, which is different from the first focal length, and wherein the step of moving the first optical lens or the second optical lens into the optical pathway further comprises the step of moving the first optical lens or the second optical lens substantially along an axis parallel with the optical axis such that the magnification of the image of the scan line formed onto the sensor is different between the first optical lens and the second optical lens.
- 14. The method according to claim 12 further comprising the step of further moving either the first or the second optical lens along the optical axis to focus the image of the scan line onto the image sensor.
- 15. The method according to claim 14 wherein the steps of moving one of said first optical lens or said second optical lens into the optical pathway and further moving either the first or the second optical lens along the optical axis to focus the image of the scan line onto the image sensor are each performed by a single drive device moving along an axis which is substantially parallel with the optical axis.

This application is related to application Ser. No. 08/922,664, entitled “SINGLE LAMP ILLUMINATION SYSTEM IN A DUAL PLANE FLAT-BED SCANNER” which is filed simultaneously with the filing of this application, the disclosure of which is incorporated by reference.
