Abstract
A two-piece hardtop for sport utility vehicles. The hardtop has front and rear roof sections removably securable to each other. The front and rear sections have overlapping portions, each of which has an inverted U-shape with vertically extending legs and a horizontally extending base between them. The U-shapes nest together with side latches being provided between adjacent legs of the front and rear sections to draw the two pieces vertically together and secure them in place. Other features include a sealing member that is provided between the nested roof sections and a gutter that is created between the sealing member and the rear roof section. The gutter helps to effectively direct water away from between the two roof sections and the vehicle. Additionally, an improved air vent is provided that allowing air to flow out from the interior of the vehicle without letting water enter the vehicle through it.
Description




BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION




1. Field of the Invention




This invention relates to the field of hardtops for sport utility vehicles and more particularly to the field of two-piece hardtops for such vehicles.




2. Discussion of the Background




Sport utility vehicles have become very popular, particularly ones with removable tops. Such removable tops can be either hard or soft and can be made of single or multiple pieces. Soft tops of canvas or vinyl are relatively simple to put on and take off the vehicle as they are lightweight and flexible. Hardtops on the other hand offer more challenges as they tend to be heavier and more cumbersome to handle, particularly one-piece hardtops. As compared to such unitary hardtops, two-piece tops offer the basic advantage that they are easier to manipulate. They also allow the user the option of removing both pieces at once or just the front piece to give different open air experiences. However, unlike one-piece hardtops, two-piece ones present the need to have an effective securing and sealing arrangement between the two pieces. An effective seal is particularly important because the two pieces are normally joined together right above the driver and front passenger and any leak between the two pieces will drip directly on them.




With this in mind, the present invention was developed. The invention provides improved securing and sealing arrangements between the front and rear roof sections of a removable, two-piece hardtop for sport utility vehicles.




SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION




This invention involves a two-piece hardtop for sport utility vehicles. The hardtop has front and rear roof sections that are removably securable to each other. The front and rear sections have overlapping portions, each of which has an inverted U-shape with vertically extending legs and a horizontally extending base between them. The U-shapes nest together with side latches being provided between adjacent legs of the front and rear sections to draw the two pieces vertically together and secure them in place.




Other features of the invention include a sealing member that is positioned between the nested roof sections and a gutter that is created between the sealing member and the rear roof section. The gutter helps to effectively direct water away from between the two roof sections and the vehicle. Additionally, an improved air vent is provided that allows air to flow out from the interior of the vehicle without letting water enter the vehicle through it.

Claims
  • 1. A method for securing front and rear roof sections of a multi-piece hardtop to each other over forward and rearward areas of a passenger vehicle, said method including the steps of:(a) positioning the rear roof section over the rearward area of the vehicle, (b) positioning the front roof section over the forward area of the vehicle, (c) overlapping adjacent portions of the front and rear roof sections, each of said overlapping portions having an inverted substantially U-shape with two substantially vertical legs and a substantially horizontally extending base therebetween, (d) drawing at least one of the overlapping portions of said front and rear roof sections substantially vertically toward the other overlapping portion to a first position using engagable members respectively mounted on adjacent overlapping legs of said overlapping portions of the front and rear roof sections, and (e) securing said front and rear sections to each other in the first position of step (d).
  • 2. The method of claim 1 further including the limitation of guiding said overlapping portions of said front and rear roof sections into a predetermined alignment with each other using a recessed member on one of the adjacent overlapping legs and a mating protruding member on the other adjacent overlapping leg.
  • 3. The method of claim 1 wherein step (d) draws the overlapping portion of the front roof section substantially vertically downwardly toward the overlapping portion of the rear roof section.
  • 4. The method of claim 1 wherein step (e) includes the further limitation of securing the front and rear roof sections to each other between adjacent overlapping legs of the overlapping portions.
  • 5. The method of claim 1 further including the step of providing a sealing member between the overlapping portions of said front and rear roof sections including the overlapping bases and legs of said overlapping portions.
  • 6. The method of claim 1 further including the step of removably attaching the front and rear roof sections respectively to the vehicle.
  • 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said vehicle has a windshield and the front roof section is removably attached thereto.
  • 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the rear roof section is first attached to the vehicle and the overlapping portion of the front rear roof section is subsequently drawn vertically downwardly toward the overlapping portion of the rear roof section.
  • 9. The method of claim 1 further including the step of providing a gutter between said front and rear roof sections adjacent said overlapping portions to direct water away from between the front and rear roof sections.
  • 10. A multi-piece hardtop having front and rear roof sections respectively positionable over forward and rearward areas of a passenger vehicle, said front and rear roof sections having overlapping portions, each of said overlapping portions having an inverted substantially U-shape with two substantially vertical legs and a substantially horizontally extending base therebetween, said multi-piece hardtop further including a mechanism to draw at least one of the overlapping portions substantially vertically toward the other overlapping portion to a deployed position, said mechanism having first and second engagable members respectively mounted on adjacent overlapping legs of the overlapping portions of the front and rear roof sections, and an arrangement to secure the front and rear roof sections to each other in said a deployed position.
  • 11. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 10 wherein one of said adjacent overlapping legs has a hole therethrough with one of said engagable members being extendable through said hole to engage said other engagable member.
  • 12. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 10 wherein said arrangement to secure the front and rear roof sections to each other in said first position secures the front and rear roof section to each other between adjacent overlapping legs of the overlapping portions.
  • 13. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 12 wherein said arrangement to secure includes said first and second engagable members.
  • 14. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 10 further including a recessed member on one of the overlapping legs and a mating protruding member on the other overlapping leg to aid in aligning said overlapping portions of said front and rear roof section into a predetermined alignment with each other.
  • 15. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 10 further including a sealing member positioned between said overlapping portions when said front and rear roof sections are in said first position.
  • 16. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 14 wherein said sealing member has portions extending between the bases and legs of the overlapping portions when said front and rear roof sections are in said first position.
  • 17. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 14 wherein the sealing member is mounted to one of the overlapping portions and forms part of a gutter between the front and rear roof sections to direct water horizontally outwardly from between the front and rear roof sections adjacent the bases of the inverted U-shapes of the overlapping portions and to direct water vertically downwardly between the front and rear roof sections adjacent the legs of the inverted U-shapes of the overlapping portions.
  • 18. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 16 wherein said gutter has an inverted U-shape with two substantially vertical legs and a substantially horizontally extending base therebetween and wherein the bottoms of the legs of said inverted U-shape are inclined downwardly and outwardly to direct water away from the front and rear roof sections and to prevent the water from collecting in the gutter.
  • 19. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 10 wherein said front and rear roof sections are respectively removably attached to said vehicle.
  • 20. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 18 wherein the vehicle has a windshield and the front roof section is removably attached to said windshield.
  • 21. The multi-piece hardtop of claim 10 wherein the front and rear roof sections are removably secured to each other.
