Claims
- 1. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned; an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing; a liquid dispensing system comprising: a liquid dispenser associated with the base module for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted on the base housing and having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle associated with the base housing and adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover the dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; the improvement comprising:the base housing including a socket for selectively receiving the recovery tank and an enclosed chamber formed longitudinally of the socket, the chamber mounting the vacuum source.
- 2. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the enclosed chamber is positioned forwardly of the socket.
- 3. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 2 and further comprising a brush roll mounted on the housing and wherein the vacuum source includes a motor which is drivingly connected to the brush roll to drive the brush roll.
- 4. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to clam 3 wherein the base housing includes a lower section and a motor cover which are connected together to define the chamber therebetween.
- 5. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the vacuum source includes a suction fan driven by the motor and the chamber has a suction fan-holding cavity and further comprising an air inlet conduit connected to the suction fan-holding cavity.
- 6. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the base housing includes a lower section and a motor cover which are connected together to define the chamber therebetween.
- 7. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the vacuum source includes a suction fan driven by a motor and the chamber has a suction fan-holding cavity and further comprising an air inlet conduit connected to the suction fan-holding cavity.
- 8. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned; an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing; a liquid dispensing system comprising: a liquid dispenser associated with the base housing for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted on the base housing having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle associated with the base housing and adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover the dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; the improvement comprising:the liquid supply tank is in the form of a flexible bladder that is mounted within the recovery tank.
- 9. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned; an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing for movement from an inclined use position to an upright position at least partially overlying the base; a liquid dispensing system comprising: a liquid dispenser for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid and removably mounted to the base housing; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted on the base housing and having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; and a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned, wherein the liquid supply tank is in the form of a flexible bladder that is mounted within the recovery tank.
- 10. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 9 and further comprising a detergent supply tank for holding a supply of concentrated cleaning solution and operably fluidly connected to the liquid supply conduit for supplying a mixture of concentrated cleaning solution and water to the dispenser.
- 11. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the detergent supply tank is also mounted on the base housing.
- 12. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned; an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing for movement from an inclined use position to an upright position at least partially overlying the base; s a liquid dispensing system comprising: a liquid dispenser for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid and removably mounted to the base housing; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted on the base housing and having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; and a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned, and further comprising a detergent supply tank for holding a supply of concentrated cleaning solution and operably fluidly connected to the liquid supply conduit for supplying a mixture of concentrated cleaning solution and water to the liquid dispenser.
- 13. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the detergent supply tank is also mounted on the base housing.
- 14. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned; an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing for movement from an inclined use position to an upright position at least partially overlying the base; a liquid dispensing system mounted at least in part to the base housing comprising: a liquid dispenser for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted on the base housing having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; and at least one of the recovery tank and the liquid supply tank form a portion of a multi-chamber tank removably mounted on the base housing and comprising at least two fluidly isolated chambers.
- 15. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned; an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing for movement from an inclined use position to an upright position at least partially overlying the base; a liquid dispensing system comprising: a liquid dispenser for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted on the base housing having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; and at least one of the recovery tank and the liquid supply tank form a portion of a multi-chamber tank removably mounted on the base housing, wherein both of the recovery tank and the fluid supply tank are included in the multichamber tank.
- 16. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the multi-chamber tank is mounted within a socket in the base housing.
- 17. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 14 wherein the multi-chamber tank is mounted within a socket in the base housing.
- 18. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned and including a socket and a chamber in horizontal juxtaposition to each other in the base housing; an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing; a liquid dispensing system mounted at least in part to the base housing comprising: a liquid dispenser for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted in the base housing socket and having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; a vacuum source mounted in the base chamber in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned.
- 19. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned; a liquid dispensing system mounted at least in part to the base housing comprising: a liquid dispenser for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted on the base housing having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; and an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing for movement about an axis passing through the recovery tank and between an inclined use position to an upright storage position at least partially overlying the base.
- 20. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned and including a socket; a liquid dispensing system mounted at least in part to the base housing comprising: a liquid dispenser for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted in the base housing socket and having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; and an upright handle having depending arms through which the handle is pivotally mounted to the base housing with the arms spanning the base housing socket.
- 21. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 20, wherein the handle pivots about an axis passing through the socket.
- 22. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned; an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing; a liquid dispensing system comprising: a liquid dispenser for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of water and removably mounted to the base housing; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank removably mounted on the base housing and having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a detergent supply tank removably mounted to the base housing and fluidly coupled to the liquid supply conduit for supplying a mixture of concentrated cleaning solution and water to the liquid dispenser.
- 23. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 22, wherein one of the liquid supply tank and the recovery tank is in the form of a flexible bladder.
- 24. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 23, wherein the liquid supply tank is in the form of a flexible bladder within the recovery tank.
- 25. A portable surface cleaning apparatus, comprising:a base housing adapted for movement along a surface to be cleaned; an upright handle pivotally mounted to the base housing for movement from an inclined use position to an upright position at least partially overlying the base; a liquid dispensing system comprising: a liquid dispenser for applying liquid to a surface to be cleaned; a liquid supply tank for holding a supply of cleaning liquid and mounted to the base housing; a liquid supply conduit fluidly connected to the liquid supply tank and to the dispenser for supplying liquid to the dispenser; a liquid recovery system comprising: a recovery tank mounted on the base housing and having a liquid recovery chamber for holding recovered liquid; a suction nozzle adapted to draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; a working air conduit extending between the recovery chamber and the suction nozzle; a vacuum source in fluid communication with the recovery chamber for generating a flow of working air from the nozzle through the working air conduit and through the recovery chamber to thereby draw dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned through the nozzle and working air conduit, and into the recovery chamber to thereby recover the dirty liquid from the surface to be cleaned; and wherein one of the liquid supply tank and the recovery tank is in the form of a flexible bladder that is mounted within the other of the liquid supply tank and the recovery tank.
- 26. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the liquid supply tank is in the form of a flexible bladder and is positioned within the recovery tank.
- 27. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 20 and further comprising an accessory hose mounted at one end to a rear portion of the base housing for optional above floor cleaning; a unitary duct connected at a first end to the accessory hose one end and, at another end, connected to the working air conduit at an accessory hose inlet; and a conversion valve in the working air conduit between the suction nozzle and the accessory hose inlet to selectively connect the vacuum source to either the suction nozzle or to the accessory hose.
- 28. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 27 wherein portions of the unitary tank are flat.
- 29. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 27 wherein at least one of upper and lower portions of the unitary duct are flat.
- 30. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 29 wherein an intermediate portion of the unitary duct extends beneath the recovery tank.
- 31. The portable surface cleaning apparatus according to claim 27 wherein an intermediate portion of the unitary duct extends beneath the recovery tank.
