Claims
- 1. A vapor retention assembly for use in partial liquid ventilation, comprising:
- a housing defining a chamber and having a plurality of connecting ports formed therein, said chamber and said connecting ports comprising a gas flow passage through the chamber between the connecting ports, said assembly further comprising a fluorophilic exchange element positioned in said chamber so as to intersect said gas flow passage; and
- a breathable fluorochemical liquid having a vapor pressure of less than about 75 Torr dispersed in said chamber wherein at least a portion of said breathable liquid is reversibly associated with said fluorophilic exchange element.
- 2. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1 wherein said fluorophilic element comprises a halogenated material.
- 3. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1 wherein said fluorophilic exchange element comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, halogenated silicone, fluoroelastomers, polyethylene, polyesters, urethane and combinations thereof.
- 4. The vapor retention assembly of claim 3 wherein said compound is polytetrafluoroethylene.
- 5. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1 wherein said fluorophilic exchange element comprises a compound having a wetting angle less than 45 degrees when measured using perfluorooctyl bromide.
- 6. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1 wherein said fluorophilic exchange element comprises a support material coated with a halogenated compound.
- 7. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1 further comprising a hygroscopic element or an electrostatic element positioned in said chamber so as to intersect said gas flow passage.
- 8. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1 wherein said fluorophilic element comprises a substantially flat wafer positioned transversely with respect to said gas flow passage.
- 9. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1 wherein the breathable fluorochemical liquid comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of perfluorooctyl bromide and perfluorodecalin.
- 10. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1, wherein said fluorophilic exchange element comprises a fluorocarbon dispersed in a silicone matrix.
- 11. The vapor retention assembly of claim 10, wherein said matrix is coated onto a support.
- 12. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1, wherein said fluorocarbon is polytetrafluoroethylene.
- 13. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1, wherein said matrix is a foam.
- 14. The vapor retention assembly of claim 13, wherein said foam is urethane.
- 15. The vapor retention assembly of claim 1, wherein said fluorophilic exchange element comprises polytetrafluoroethylene dispersed in silicone and coated onto urethane foam.
