- 6. The system of claim 5, wherein the voice command comprises a plurality of individual voice commands that each specify a dialed digit.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile unit further comprises a smart modem operable to extract digital information representing the authorized telephone number list communicated by the host controller, the smart modem further operable to pass the digital information to the processor.
- 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the host controller further comprises an input device to allow an operator to specify the authorized telephone number list.
- 9. A mobile unit for communicating using a cellular telephone network, comprising:
- a first communication device operable to receive an authorized telephone number list from a host controller remotely disposed from the mobile unit;
- a memory coupled to the communication device and operable to store the authorized telephone number list;
- a second communication device operable to initiate a call to a telephone number using the cellular telephone network; and
- a processor coupled to the memory and the second communication device, the processor operable to inhibit the call if the telephone number is not included in the authorized number list.
- 10. The mobile unit of claim 9, wherein the first communication device and the second communication device comprise a single cellular transceiver.
- 11. The mobile unit of claim 9, wherein:
- the first communication device comprises a smart modem coupled to a cellular transceiver; and
- the second communication device comprises a voice recognition module coupled to the cellular transceiver.
- 12. The mobile unit of claim 9, wherein the authorized telephone number list comprises a telephone number associated with the host controller that enables reporting of information on a vehicle coupled to the mobile unit.
- 13. The mobile unit of claim 9, further comprising:
- a microphone operable to receive a voice command; and
- a voice recognition module coupled to the microphone and operable to translate the voice command into digital information that specifies the telephone number.
- 14. The mobile unit of claim 9, further comprising:
- a handset having a plurality of numerical keys;
- circuitry to disable the numerical keys of the handset;
- a microphone operable to receive a voice command; and
- a voice recognition module coupled to the microphone and operable to translate the voice command into digital information that specifies the telephone number.
- 15. The mobile unit of claim 14, wherein the voice command comprises a plurality of individual voice commands that each specify a dialed digit.
- 16. The mobile unit of claim 9, wherein the mobile unit further comprises a smart modem operable to extract digital information representing the authorized telephone number list communicated by the host controller, the smart modem further operable to pass the digital information to the processor.
- 17. A method for communicating using a cellular telephone network, the method comprising the following steps performed at a mobile unit:
- receiving an authorized telephone number list from a host controller remotely disposed from the mobile unit;
- storing the authorized telephone number list in a memory;
- initiating a call to a telephone number; and
- completing the call if the telephone number is included in the authorized number list received from the host controller and stored in the memory.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the steps of receiving and completing are performed by a single cellular transceiver.
- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein the step of receiving an authorized telephone number list comprises:
- receiving a call from the remote host controller at a cellular transceiver;
- extracting digital information that represents an authorized telephone number list; and
- passing the digital information to a processor.
- 20. The method of claim 17, wherein the step of initiating a call comprises:
- receiving a voice command at a microphone; and
- translating the voice command into digital information that specifies the telephone number.
- 21. The method of claim 17, wherein the step of initiating a call comprises:
- disabling a handset of the mobile unit to prevent the dialing of numerical keys;
- receiving a voice command at a microphone; and
- translating the voice command into digital information that specifies the telephone number.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the voice command comprises a plurality of individual voice commands that each specify a dialed digit.
