Claims
- 1. A system for locating vehicles using a cellular network, the cellular network comprising a plurality of cellular telephone systems, comprising:
- a cellular telephone in at least one vehicle that reads a system identification number emitted by a serving cellular telephone system operating in an area including the location of the vehicle, the cellular telephone transmits the received system identification number; and
- a remote host controller coupled with the cellular network, the remote host controller receives the system identification number transmitted by the cellular telephone, the remote host controller comprising a first memory containing geographical coordinates corresponding to system identification numbers for cellular telephone systems in the cellular network, the remote host controller determines the geographic location of the vehicle in response to an interrogation of the first memory with the transmitted system identification number.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the remote host controller comprises:
- a second memory including a cellular number of the serving cellular telephone system; and
- a communications device that initiates calls from the remote host controller to the vehicle using the cellular number.
- 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the remote host controller comprises a display at the remote host controller that displays the geographic location of the vehicle.
- 4. A method for locating a vehicle equipped with a cellular transceiver coupled with a cellular network, the cellular network comprising a plurality of cellular telephone systems, the method comprising:
- receiving at the cellular transceiver a system identification number emitted by a serving cellular telephone system operating in an area including the location of the vehicle;
- transmitting at the cellular transceiver the received system identification number;
- receiving at a remote host controller the system identification number transmitted by the cellular transceiver; and
- interrogating a first memory at the remote host controller in response to the transmitted system identification number to determine the location of the vehicle.
- 5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:
- interrogating a second memory at the remote host controller in response to the transmitted system identification number to determine a cellular number of the serving cellular telephone system; and
- initiating a call from the remote host controller to the vehicle using the cellular number.
- 6. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of displaying at the remote host controller the geographic location of the vehicle.
- 7. A method for communicating using a vehicle equipped with a cellular transceiver coupled to a cellular network, the cellular network comprising a plurality of cellular telephone systems, the method comprising:
- receiving at the cellular transceiver a system identification number emitted by a serving cellular telephone system operating in an area including the location of the vehicle;
- comparing the received system identification number to a list of authorized system identification numbers identifying authorized cellular telephone systems, the list of authorized system identification numbers being stored in a first memory on the vehicle;
- interrogating a second memory on the vehicle in response to the received system identification number to retrieve a dialing method to initiate a call in the serving cellular telephone system; and
- initiating a call from the vehicle using the retrieved dialing method.
- 8. The communicating method of claim 7, further comprising the step of receiving at the cellular transceiver a new system identification number if the received system identification number does not match a number in the list of authorized system identification numbers.
- 9. The communicating method of claim 7, further comprising the step of remotely programming a list of authorized telephone numbers being stored in a third memory on the vehicle from a remote host controller for inhibiting dialing of telephone numbers from the vehicle other than authorized telephone numbers, wherein the step of initiating a call further comprises:
- receiving a telephone number at the cellular transceiver;
- interrogating the list of authorized telephone numbers; and
- initiating the call if the received telephone number is in the list of authorized telephone numbers.
- 10. A system for locating vehicles using a cellular network, the cellular network comprising a plurality of cellular telephone systems, comprising:
- a cellular telephone in at least one vehicle that reads a system identification number emitted by a serving cellular telephone system operating in an area including the location of the vehicle;
- a first memory that stores a list of authorized system identification numbers identifying authorized cellular telephone systems;
- a microprocessor disposed on the vehicle and coupled to the first memory and the cellular telephone, the microprocessor receives the system identification number read by the cellular telephone, the microprocessor interrogates the first memory in response to the system identification number to determine if the cellular telephone is authorized to receive service from the serving cellular telephone system;
- wherein the cellular telephone transmits the received system identification number if authorized; and
- a remote host controller in communication with the cellular network, the remote host controller receives the System identification number transmitted by the cellular telephone, the remote host controller comprising a first database containing geographical coordinates corresponding to system identification numbers for cellular telephone systems in cellular network, the remote host controller determines a graphic location of the vehicle in response to an interrogation of the first database with the system identification number of the serving cellular telephone system transmitted by the cellular telephone.
- 11. The system of claim 10, wherein the remote host controller further comprises:
- a second database containing a cellular number of the serving cellular telephone system; and
- a communications device that initiates calls from the remote host controller to the vehicle using the cellular number.
- 12. The system of claim 10, wherein the remote host controller further comprises:
- a display at the remote host controller that displays the geographic location of the vehicle.
- 13. The system of claim 10, wherein the remote host controller remotely programs the first memory.
- 14. The system of claim 10, wherein the microprocessor directs the cellular telephone to receive a new system identification number if the system identification number does not match a number in the list of authorized system identification numbers stored in the first memory.
- 15. The system of claim 10, further comprising a second memory that stores dialing methods to initiate calls, wherein the microprocessor interrogates the second memory in response to the system identification number to determine the dialing method to initiate a call in the serving cellular telephone system.
- 16. The system of claim 15, wherein the remote host controller remotely programs the second memory.
- 17. A method for locating a vehicle equipped with a cellular transceiver using a cellular network, the cellular network comprising a plurality of cellular telephone systems, the method comprising:
- receiving at the cellular transceiver a system identification number emitted by a serving cellular telephone system operating in an area including the location of the vehicle;
- comparing at the vehicle the received system identification number to a list of authorized system identification numbers identifying authorized cellular telephone systems, the list of authorized system identification numbers being stored in a first memory on the vehicle;
- transmitting the System identification number if the received system identification number matches a number in the list of authorized system identification numbers;
- receiving at a remote host controller through the cellular network the transmitted system identification number: and
- interrogating a first memory at the remote host controller in response to the transmitted system identification number to determine the location of the vehicle.
- 18. The method of claim 17, further comprising:
- interrogating a second memory on the vehicle in response to the received system identification number to retrieve a dialing method to initiate a call in the serving cellular telephone system; and
- initiating a call from the vehicle using the retrieved dialing method.
- 19. The method of claim 17, further comprising:
- interrogating a second memory at the remote host controller in response to the transmitted system identification number to obtain a cellular number of the serving cellular telephone system; and
- initiating a call from the remote host controller to the vehicle using the cellular number.
- 20. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of displaying on a display at the remote host controller the geographic location of the vehicle.
- 21. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of remotely programming the list of authorized system identification numbers from the remote host controller.
- 22. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of remotely programming authorized telephone numbers from the remote host controller for inhibiting dialing of telephone numbers from the vehicle other than authorized telephone numbers.
- 23. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of receiving at the cellular transceiver a new system identification number if the received system identification number does not match a number in the list of authorized system identification numbers.
- 24. The method of claim 17, further comprising:
- reading a signal strength received by the cellular transceiver from the serving cellular telephone system; and
- determining whether the signal strength is sufficient to initiate a call.
