Claims
- 1. An overcoat composition for image recording elements comprising:
30 to 95 weight percent, based on the dry laydown of the overcoat, of hydrophobic polymer particles having an average size of 0.01 to 0.5 micrometers, said hydrophobic polymer being a homopolymer of the monomer described in Structure 1 or a copolymer containing at least 30 weight percent, based on the total weight of monomers, of the monomer described in Structure 1 and 5 to 70 weight percent of gelatin, based on the dry laydown of the overcoat: 28wherein: R is H, CH3, C2H5, and C3H7; and X1, X2, X3, X4 and X5 are H, F, Cl, Br, I, CN, CH3O, C2H5O, C3H7O, C4H9O, CH3, C2H5, C3H7, n-C4H9, sec-C4H9, tert-C4H9, CF3, 2F5, C3F7, iso-C3F7, n-C4F9, sec-C4F9, tert-C4F9, CH3NH, (CH3)2N, n-C5H C4H9, n-C6H13, n-C7H15, n-C8H17, n-C9H19, n-C10H21, or n-C12H25.
- 2. The overcoat composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrophobic polymer comprises polymer particles of 0.02 to 0.2 micrometers in average size.
- 3. An imaging element comprising:
a support; at least one image recording layer; and an outer layer overlying the at least one image recording layer, the outer layer comprising the composition of claim 1.
- 4. The imaging element of claim 3 wherein the image recording layer is a light sensitive silver-based emulsion layer and the element is a photographic element.
- 5. The imaging element of claim 3 wherein the image recording layer is an ink-receptive layer and the element is an ink-jet receiver.
- 6. The imaging element of claim 3 further comprising an antistatic layer superposed on the support.
- 7. The imaging element of claim 3 further comprising a transparent magnetic layer superposed on the support.
- 8. The imaging element of claim 3 wherein the support is transparent.
- 9. The imaging element of claim 3 wherein the support is reflective.
- 10. The imaging element of claim 5 wherein the support is partially transparent and partially reflective.
- 11. An image recording element having a protective overcoat thereon, the protective overcoat formed by the steps of:
providing an image recording element having at least one image recording layer, said image recording layer selected from a silver-based light-sensitive emulsion layer and an ink-receptive layer; applying to the at least one image recording layer an aqueous coating composition comprising 30 to 95 weight percent, based on the dry laydown of the overcoat, of hydrophobic polymer particles having an average size of 0.01 to 0.5 micrometers, said hydrophobic polymer being a homopolymer of the monomer described in Structure 1 or a copolymer containing at least 30 percent by weight, based on total weight of monomers, of the monomer described in Structure 1 and 5 to 70 weight percent of gelatin, based on the dry laydown of the overcoat; processing the at least one silver-based light sensitive emulsion layer to provide an image or applying ink to the ink-receptive layer to provide an image; and fusing the hydrophobic polymer particles to provide an image recording photographic element having a protective overcoat: 29wherein: R is H, CH3, C2H5, or C3H7; and X1, X2, X3, X4 and X5 are H, F, Cl, Br, I, CN, CH3O, C2H5O, C3H7O, C4H9O, CH3, C2H5, C3H7, n-C4H9, sec-C4H9, tert-C4H9, CF3, 2F5, C3F7, iso-C3F7, n-C4F9, sec-C4F9, tert-C4F9, CH3NH, (CH3)2N, n-C5H C4H9, n-C6H13, n-C7H15, n-C9H17, n-C9H19, n-C10H21, or n-C12H25.
- 12. The imaging element of claim 11 wherein the image recording layer is a light sensitive silver-based emulsion layer and the element is a photographic element.
- 13. The imaging element of claim 11 wherein the image recording layer is an ink-receptive layer and the element is an ink-jet receiver.
- 14. The imaging element of claim 11 further comprising an antistatic layer superposed on the support.
- 15. The imaging element of claim 11 further comprising a transparent magnetic layer superposed on the support.
- 16. The imaging element of claim 11 wherein the support is transparent.
- 17. The imaging element of claim 11 wherein the support is reflective.
- 18. The imaging element of claim 13 wherein the support is partially transparent and partially reflective.
- 19. The overcoat composition of claim 1 wherein the hydrophobic polymer comprises 70 to 100 weight percent, based on the total weight of monomers, of the monomer described in structure 1.
- 20. The overcoat composition of claim 1 further comprising biocides, surfactants and lubricants.
- 21. The image recording element of claim 11 wherein the fusing step comprises the application of heat.
- 22. The image recording element of claim 11 wherein the fusing step comprises the application of heat and pressure.
- 23. The image recording element of claim 11 wherein the at least one silver-based light sensitive emulsion layer or ink-receptive layer is applied simultaneously with applying the overcoat composition.
