Claims
- 1. A web lift system for lifting a web of polishing material comprising:
a platen having an upper support surface for supporting a web of polishing material during processing; and a first lift member coupled to a first side of the platen; the first lift member having a retracted position and an extended position relative to the platen, wherein the first lift member in the extended position lifts the web of polishing material from the platen.
- 2. The web lift system of claim 1 further comprising:
a supply roll coupled to the first side of the platen and having an unused portion of polishing material wound thereon, wherein the web extends from the supply roll over the first lift member and across the upper surface of the platen.
- 3. The web lift system of claim 1 further comprising:
a second lift member coupled to a second side of the platen opposite the first lift member.
- 4. The web lift system of claim 3, wherein the second lift member has a retracted position and an extended position relative to the platen, wherein the second lift member in the extended position lifts the web of polishing material from the platen.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the platen is rotatable on an axis substantially perpendicular to the upper support surface.
- 6. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
a first biasing means coupled to the first lift member.
- 7. The system of claim 6, wherein the first biasing means is at least one of a spring or actuator.
- 8. The system of claim 1 further comprising:
one or more fluid delivery nozzles adapted to dispose a fluid between the platen and the web.
- 9. A web lift system for lifting a web of polishing material comprising:
a platen; a web of polishing material having a first portion disposed on an upper surface of the platen; and a first roller coupled to a first side of the platen disposed lateral to the upper surface and having the web of polishing material passing thereover; the first roller having a first position that maintains the first portion of the web disposed on the platen and a section position that places the first portion of the web and platen in a spaced-apart relation.
- 10. The web lift system of claim 9 further comprising:
a supply roll coupled to the first side of the platen and having an unused portion of polishing material wound thereon, wherein the web extends from the supply roll over the first roller and across the upper surface of the platen.
- 11. The web lift system of claim 9 further comprising:
a second roller coupled to a second side of the platen and having a first position that maintains the first portion of the web disposed on the platen and a section position that places the web and platen in a spaced-apart relation.
- 12. The system of claim 9, wherein the platen is rotatable on an axis substantially perpendicular to the upper surface.
- 13. The system of claim 9 further comprising:
a first biasing means coupled to the first roller.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the first biasing means is at least one of a spring or actuator.
- 15. A web lift system comprising:
a platen adapted to support a web of polishing material; a first member disposed adjacent and coupled to the platen, the member adapted to support the web; and an actuator coupled to the platen and the first member, wherein the actuator moves the first member to an extended position that places the web in a spaced-apart relation to the platen.
- 16. A web lift system comprising:
a platen adapted to support a web of polishing material; a first member disposed adjacent to the platen, the member adapted to support the web; an actuator coupled to the platen and the first member, wherein the actuator moves the first member to an extended position that places the web in a spaced-apart relation to the platen; a second member disposed adjacent the platen opposite the first member, the second member adapted to support the web; and a biasing means coupled between the platen and the second member.
- 17. The system of claim 16 further comprising:
at least one of an actuator or a spring coupled between the platen and the second member.
- 18. The system of claim 16 further comprising:
a supply roll containing an unused portion of the web; and, a take-up roll containing a portion of the web which has advanced across the platen, wherein a predetermined length of web is unwound from the supply roll as the first member moves to the extended position and the unwound length of web is wound on the take-up roll as the first member returns from the extended position.
- 19. A processing system for processing substrates comprising:
one or more webs of polishing material; one or more polishing heads each adapted to retain the substrate while moving the substrate relative a respective web in a polishing pattern; one or more platens adapted to support a respective web of polishing material; a first lift member coupled to a first side of each platen; and a second lift member coupled to a second side of each platen, wherein at least one of the lift members is movable between a retracted and an extended position relative to the platen, the extended position adapted to place the web in a spaced-apart relation with the platen.
- 20. The system of claim 19 further comprising:
a carousel supporting the polishing heads.
- 21. The system of claim 19 further comprising:
a linear drive system supporting the polishing heads.
- 22. The system of claim 19 further comprising:
a first biasing means coupled to the first lift member for urging the first lift member to the extended position.
- 23. The system of claim 22, wherein the first biasing means is at least one of a spring or an actuator.
- 24. The system of claim 19 further comprising:
one or more fluid delivery nozzles adapted to dispose a fluid between each of the one or more platens and the respective web supported thereon.
- 25. The system of claim 19, wherein at least one of the first lift member and the second lift member is a roller.
- 26. A method for moving a web of polishing material comprising the steps of:
supporting a web of polishing material on a platen between a first member and a second member; and moving at least one of the first or the second members to an extended position relative the platen that places the web in a spaced-apart relation with the platen.
- 27. The method of claim 26, wherein the step of moving at least one of the first or the second members comprises moving the first member and the second member.
- 28. The method of claim 26, wherein the step of moving further comprises:
unwinding a portion of the web.
- 29. The method of claim 26, wherein the step of moving further comprises: at least partially extending the first member before extending the second member.
- 30. The method of claim 26 further comprising the step of:
winding a portion of the web to return any extended member to the retracted position.
- 31. The method of claim 26, wherein the step of moving pulls the web from a supply roll.
- 32. The method of claim 26, wherein the step of moving the first or the second member further comprises:
actuating a linear motion device.
- 33. The method of claim 32, wherein the linear motion device is a cylinder, solenoid or lead screw.
- 34. A method for moving a web of polishing material comprising the steps of:
polishing a first substrate on a web of polishing material support on a platen; and mechanically placing the web of polishing material and the platen in a spaced-apart relation after polishing the substrate.
- 35. The method of claim 34 further comprising:
advancing the mechanically spaced web.
- 36. The method of claim 35 further comprising:
mechanically lowering the web of polishing material back into contact with the platen; and polishing a second substrate
- 37. The method of claim 38, wherein the step of mechanically separating further comprises:
actuating a first roller guiding the web of polishing material onto an upper surface of the platen away from the platen.
- 38. The method of claim 37, wherein the step of mechanically separating further comprises:
actuating a second roller disposed on a side of the platen opposite the first roller and having the web of polishing material disposed thereover away from the platen.
- 39. A method for moving a web of polishing material comprising the steps of:
mechanically spacing a web of polishing material from a platen adapted to support the web of polishing material during processing; advancing the mechanically spaced web of polishing material across the platen; returning the web of polishing material into contact with the platen; and polishing a substrate on the platen.
- 40. The method of claim 39, wherein the step of mechanically spacing further comprises:
moving a roller disposed between a supply roll having a portion of the web of polishing material wound thereon and the platen.
