Claims
- 1. Means for feeding a tab or the like from a pick-up position to an applying position comprising a pivotally mounted picker head movable between said pick up and applying positions and having a tab carrying face, to be presented at said positions, means for feeding tabs on a carrier web to said pickup position, means for applying vacuum to said tab carrying face at said pick up position to effect pick up of a tab on said carrier web, for maintaining said vacuum at said face during picker head movement between said pick up and applying positions to hold a picked up tab on said face during such movement, for releasing said vacuum at said face at said applying and for applying a positive air jet through said face at said applying station to deliver a tab held on said face away from said face under positive air pressure, air jet means disposed in opposed relation to said tab carrying face with said picker head at said pick up position to direct an air jet perpendicularly towards said pick up face against the back of a tab being picked up to drive the tab through a hole in said carrier web while against said face while vacuum is applied thereto, and means for moving said picker head between said pick up and applying positions.
- 2. Means for feeding tabs or the like as claimed in claim 1 in which said means for moving said picker head includes a resiliently displaceable driving element, and means are provided to displace said resiliently displaceable driving element immediately after said picker head has been moved to said pick up position to move said picker head initially slowly away from said pick up position.
- 3. Means for feeding tabs or the like as claimed in claim 1, in which the tabs are individually releasably mounted in seriatum on a carrier web and means are provided to advance said carrier web to move the tabs individually and successively to said tab pick up position to be presented individually at said tab pick-up position for pick-up by said picker head.
- 4. Tab feed and applying means for use in core winding apparatus having wound core transfer means to receive an ejected wound core at an unloading station and to move same to a tabbing station, said tab feed and applying means being adapted to deliver tabs, each having an adhesive carrying face and strippably adhered by said face in succession on a longitudinal carrier web having a series of feed perforations therethrough adjacent a longitudinal edge thereof successively to a pick-up position and to pick off the tab arriving at the pick-up position and deliver same to said tabbing station to bring the adhesive carrying tab face into contact with a wound core at said station to effect tabbing of the core, said tab feed and applying means comprising a rotatable wheel having a series of pin projections on the periphery thereof to engage the web perforation to effect web feed on wheel rotation to feed a web around the wheel to a point at the underside thereof constituting said pick-up position to deliver said tabs successively to said pick-up position, a picker head having an upper tab carrying face secured to the end of a shaft extending below said wheel in a direction axially thereof and slidably mounted in a guide sleeve secured to a rotatable shaft, a crank arm fixed to a rocker shaft and pivotably connected to said picker head and having a throw to swing said picker head from a first tab, pick-up, position in which the upper carrying face of said picker head contacts the outer face of a tab at said pick-up position at the underside of said wheel, to pick up such tab, downwardly, forwardly, and then upwardly to bring said head into a second, tab applying position in which the adhesive carrying face of a tab picked up by said picker head contacts the periphery of a wound core at said tabbing station, said picker head having port means leading from said pick-up face and in communication with a vacuum source; means to control said vacuum source to apply a vacuum at said picker head tab carrying face sufficient to overcome the adhesion of the tab to said carrier web with said picker head at said first tab pick up position to effect tab pick up and to hold said tab during transfer to said second tab applying position and to release the vacuum at said tab applying position, means responsive to the movement of the wound core transfer means to actuate said rocker shaft to effect picker head movement from said first to said second position on said wound core transfer means transferring a wound core from the unloading station to the tabbing station and to effect picker head movement from said second to said first position on return of the wound core transfer means to the unloading station, and means responsive to picker head movement from said first position to said second position and return to rotate said wheel sufficiently to advance a succeeding tab to said tab pick up position.
- 5. Tab feed and applying means as claimed in claim 4 in which the wound core transfer means is mounted on a main rocker shaft to move between said unloading and tabbing station and the means responsive to the core transfer means movement to actuate the picker rocker shaft comprises a crank arm connected to said main rocker shaft, a rack member connected to said latter crank arm and engaging a pinion rotatably mounted on said picker head rocker shaft, spring means providing a resilient drive between said pinion and said picker head rocker shaft, and guide means rotatably mounted on said picker rocker shaft through which said rack member operates to keep said rack member and pinion in mesh.
- 6. Tab feed and applying means as claimed in claim 4 in which means are provided to slowly incrementally rotate said picker head rocker shaft immediately subsequent to the arrival of said picker head at said tab pick up station in a direction to move said picker head downwardly from said tab pick up position to slowly draw off a tab prior to tab transfer to said tabbing position, said resilient drive between said pinion and picker head rocker shaft permitting said incremental picker head rocker shaft rotation.
- 7. Tab feed means as claimed in claim 6 in which said means to incrementally rotate said picker head rocker shaft comprises a control arm fixed to said picker head rocker shaft, an air cylinder, and a limit valve for controlling said air cylinder, said control arm being arranged to move into the path of the piston of said air cylinder and to operate said limit valve upon rotation of said picker head rocker shaft to move said picker head to said pick-up position, said limit valve on being operated effecting extension of the piston of said air cylinder to engage and slowly displace said control arm through a limited distance.
- 8. Tab feed and applying means as claimed in claim 4 in which means are provided to direct a jet of air through said port means leading from said picker head tab carrying face with said picker head at said second tabbing position to assist in tab application.
- 9. Tab feed and applying means as claimed in claim 4 in which the carrier web has a second series of openings therethrough underlying the tabs succesively adhered thereto and adapted to arrive successively at said tab pick up position, and said wheel has a series of peripheral openings adapted to register with said second series of web perforations and means are provided to direct a jet of air through said wheel opening arriving at said tab pick up position to direct air through the web opening underlying the tab at said tab pick up position during tab pick up by said picker head.
- 10. Tab feed and applying means as claimed in claim 4 in which said wheel is provided with a series of ratchet teeth around the face thereof, and said means responsive to said picker head movement to rotate said wheel comprises a rocker arm secured to said shaft on which said picker head shaft guide is secured and a pawl pivoted at its lower end to said rocker arm and having an upper free end co-acting with said ratchet teeth to effect wheel feed.
