Claims
- 1. A powder coating composition comprising a hydroxy-functional resin, an aminoplast condensation product as a curing agent, and from about 0.05 to about 1 part per hundred parts by weight of the combined weight of the resin and the curing agent of an amine salt of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid having a pH of from about 4.5 to about 10 as a catalyst; said composition having a hot plate melt flow of at least about 50 mm at 375.degree. F., with the proviso that if it is more than 150 mm at said temperature, the composition must have a gel time not greater than about 280 seconds.
- 2. The powder coating composition of claim 1 wherein the curing agent is an alkoxylated aminoplast.
- 3. The powder coating composition of claim 1 wherein the resin is a polyester.
- 4. The powder coating composition of claim 3 wherein the catalyst has a pH of at least about 6.5.
- 5. The powder coating composition of claim 1 wherein the resin is an epoxy resin.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amount of catalyst is from about 0.2 to about 0.8 phr.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the resin is a hydroxy-functional acrylate or methacrylate resin.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein the amine is diethylamine.
- 9. A method for imparting a wrinkle finish to a coating on a substrate comprising applying a powder comprising a hydroxy-functional resin, an aminoplast condensation product as a curing agent, and from about 0.05 to about 1 part per hundred parts by weight of the combined weight of the resin and the curing agent of an amine salt of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid having a pH of from about 4.5 to about 10 as a catalyst to a surface of the substrate and curing the powder, said powder having a hot plate melt flow of at least about 50 mm at 375.degree. F., with the proviso that if it is more than 150 mm at said temperature, the powder must have a gel time not greater than about 280 seconds.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the curing agent is an aminoplast condensation product.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the curing agent is an alkoxylated aminoplast.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the catalyst is the diethylamine salt.
- 13. The method of claim 9 wherein the amount of catalyst is from about 0.2 to about 0.8 phr.
