Claims
- 1. A process for setting up the xerographic system of an electrostatographic reproduction machine having different operating modes for processing different image types, said machine including a photoreceptor, corona means for charging said photoreceptor in preparation for imaging, exposure means for exposing said charged photoreceptor to produce latent electrostatic images on said photoreceptor, and developer means including at least one magnetic brush for developing said latent electrostatic images, comprising the steps of:
- a) for a first of said modes;
- 1) adjusting bias on said corona charging means and the intensity of said exposure means;
- 2) generating variable density test images on said photoreceptor, said test images including a firs test image representative of image background levels, a second test image representative of a relatively high image density, and a third test image representative of a relatively low image density;
- 3) measuring the potentials of said image test images generated on said photoreceptor;
- 4) comparing the potentials of said first test image and said second test image with one another to obtain a predetermined high contrast voltage;
- 5) comparing the potentials of said first test image and said third test image with one another to obtain a predetermined low contrast voltage;
- 6) repeating steps 1-5 until predetermined high and low contrast potentials are obtained;
- 7) generating additional test images on said photoreceptor;
- 8) measuring the potentials of said additional test images to determine the developer means bias requirements for said developer means;
- 9) using said developer means bias requirements, determining the developer bias setting for said magnetic brush; and
- b) repeating steps 1-9 for each of the remaining ones of said operating modes whereby to set up said machine for optimized processing of images in each of said operating modes.
- 2. A process for setting up the xerographic system of a multi-mode electrostatographic reproduction machine, said machine having a photoreceptor, corona means for charging said photoreceptor in preparation for imaging, exposure means for exposing said charged photoreceptor to produce latent electrostatic images on said photoreceptor, and developer means including at least one magnetic brush for developing said latent electrostatic images, comprising the steps of:
- a) adjusting bias on said corona charging means and the intensity of said exposure means;
- b) operating said xerographic system to generate image test patches representative of image background and relatively high density and relatively low density images on said photoreceptor;
- c) measuring the potentials of said image test patches generated on said photoreceptor;
- d) comparing the potentials of said image background and said relatively high density images with one another to obtain a high contrast voltage;
- e) comparing the potentials of said image background and said relatively low density images with one another to obtain a low contrast voltage;
- f) repeating steps a-e until predetermined high and low contrast potentials are obtained;
- g) operating said xerographic system to generate additional test image patches on said photoreceptor;
- h) measuring the potentials of said additional image patches;
- i) from the potentials obtained in step h, determining the developer means bias requirements for said developer means; and
- j) from the developer means bias requirements obtained in step i determining the developer bias to be applied to said magnetic brush.
- 3. A process for setting up the xerographic system of a multi-mode electrostatographic reproduction machine, said machine having a photoreceptor, corona means for charging said photoreceptor in preparation for imaging, exposure means for exposing said charged photoreceptor to produce latent electrostatic images on said photoreceptor, and developer means including at least one magnetic brush for developing said latent electrostatic images, comprising the steps of:
- a) adjusting bias on said corona charging means and the intensity of said exposure means;
- b) generating variable density test images on said photoreceptor, said test images including a first test image representative of image background levels, a second test image representative of a relatively high image density, and a third test image representative of a relatively low image density;
- c) measuring the potentials of said image test images generated on said photoreceptor;
- d) comparing the potentials of said first image and said second test image with one another to obtain a predetermined high contrast voltage;
- e) comparing the potentials of said first test image and said third test image with one another to obtain a predetermined low contrast voltage;
- f) generating additional test images on said photoreceptor;
- g) measuring the potentials of said additional test images to determine the developer means bias requirements for said developer means; and
- h) using said developer means bias requirements, determining the developer bias for said magnetic brush; and
- i) applying the developer bias from step h to said magnetic brush.
