Claims
- 1. Process for adjusting for optimum toner concentration in an electrostatographic reproduction machine having a photoreceptor, corona means for charging said photoreceptor in preparation for imaging, exposure means for exposing said charged photoreceptor to produce latent electrostatic images on said photoreceptor, developer means for developing said latent electrostatic image, interdocument erase lamp means for exposing said photoreceptor to erase unwanted images prior to development by said developer means, and toner dispensing means for supplying fresh toner to said developer means, comprising the steps of:
- a) operating said erase lamp means to selectively expose portions of said photoreceptor to create latent electrostatic images on exposed portions of said photoreceptor;
- b) developing said latent electrostatic images to provide developed images on said photoreceptor;
- c) from said developed images, determining the current toner concentration;
- d) where said current toner concentration is below said optimum toner concentration, actuating said toner dispensing means to add toner to said developer means while continuing steps a-c until said toner concentration is above said optimum toner concentration;
- e) inactivating said toner dispensing means to terminate the addition of toner to said developer means; and
- f) continuing steps a-d until said toner concentration is substantially equal to said optimum toner concentration.
- 2. Process for adjusting for optimum toner concentration in an electrostatographic reproduction machine having a photoreceptor, corona means for charging said photoreceptor in preparation for imaging, exposure means for exposing said charged photoreceptor to produce latent electrostatic images on said photoreceptor, developer means for developing said latent electrostatic image, interdocument erase lamp means for exposing said photoreceptor to erase unwanted images prior to development by said developer means, and toner dispensing means for supplying fresh toner to said developer means, comprising the steps of:
- a) biasing said developer means to a predetermined level;
- b) adjusting said corona means to provide a preset charge on said photoreceptor;
- c) exposing said charged photoreceptor using said erase lamp means to produce latent electrostatic images on said photoreceptor;
- d) developing said images;
- e) determining the density of said images;
- f) from said image density, determining current toner concentration;
- g) where said current toner concentration is greater than said optimum toner concentration, continuing steps c-f whereby to reduce the amount of toner in said developer means until said toner concentration is less than said optimum toner concentration;
- h) actuating said toner dispensing means to add toner to said developer means;
- i) continuing steps c-f until said toner concentration is greater than said optimum toner concentration;
- j) inactivating said toner dispensing means to terminate the addition of toner to said developer means;
- k) continuing steps c-f to reduce the amount of toner in said developer means until said optimum toner concentration is obtained.
- 3. The process according to claim 2 including the step of disabling said exposure means.
- 4. Process for adjusting the toner concentration in an electrostatographic reproduction machine having a photoreceptor, corona means for charging said photoreceptor in preparation for imaging, exposure means for exposing said charged photoreceptor to produce latent electrostatic images on said photoreceptor, developer means for developing said latent electrostatic image, and interdocument erase lamp means normally operable to expose said photoreceptor and erase unwanted images prior to development by said developer means, comprising the steps of:
- a) biasing said developer means at a predetermined level;
- b) adjusting said corona means to provide a preset charge on said photoreceptor;
- c) producing images on said photoreceptor using said erase lamp as an image source;
- d) developing said images;
- e) using said developed images to monitor current toner concentration;
- f) where said current toner concentration is greater than said optimum toner concentration, continuing to produce images whereby to reduce the percentage of toner in said developer means while monitoring toner concentration;
- g) when said toner concentration is less than said optimum toner concentration, adding toner to said developer means;
- h) continuing to add toner to said developer means and produce images while monitoring toner concentration until said toner concentration is greater than said optimum toner concentration;
- i) when said toner concentration is greater than said optimum toner concentration, terminating the addition of toner to said developer means; and
- j) continuing to produce images whereby to reduce the percentage of toner in said developer means while monitoring toner concentration until said optimum toner concentration is obtained.
- 5. Process for adjusting for optimum toner percentage in the developer of an electrostatographic reproduction machine having a photoreceptor, corona means for charging said photoreceptor in preparation for imaging, exposure means for exposing said charged photoreceptor to produce latent electrostatic images on said photoreceptor, developer means for developing said latent electrostatic image, interdocument erase lamp means for exposing said photoreceptor to erase unwanted images prior to development by said developer means, and toner dispensing means for supplying fresh toner to said developer means, comprising the steps of:
- a) operating said erase lamp means to create latent electrostatic images on said photoreceptor;
- b) developing said latent electrostatic images to provide developed images on said photoreceptor;
- c) from said developed images, determining the percentage of toner in said developer;
- d) where said percentage of toner in said developer is below said optimum toner percentage, adding toner to said developer while continuing steps a-c;
- e) when the percentage of toner in said developer is above said optimum toner concentration, terminating the addition of toner to said developer; and
- f) continuing steps a-c until said optimum toner percentage is achieved.
