Claims
- 1. Apparatus for delivering air for air conditioning a zone of a building, said apparatus comprising, in combination, a mixing chamber having a first and a second air inlet, means for delivering primary, conditioned air through said first inlet to said chamber, means including an air bag actuator and effective to vary the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber between a maximum and a predetermined lesser rate, a fluidic valve having first and second discharge legs and operably connected to receive air circulated in the apparatus, means for conducting air between the first discharge leg of said fluidic valve and said air bag actuator, an outlet operatively connected to deliver air from said chamber to the zone of the building, and induction means operative to induce a flow of air into said chamber through said second inlet thereof for mixture therein with primary conditioned air and delivery therewith through said outlet to the building zone, whereby the energy required to power said means effective to vary the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber is provided by air circulated in the apparatus.
- 2. Apparatus for delivering air for air conditioning a zone of a building, said apparatus comprising, in combination, a mixing chamber having a first and a second air inlet, means for delivering primary, conditioned air through said first inlet to said chamber, means including an air bag actuator and effective to vary the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber between a maximum and a predetermined lesser rate, a fluidic valve having first and second discharge legs and operably connected to receive primary conditioned air, means for conducting air between the first discharge leg of said fluidic valve and said air bag actuator, an outlet operatively connected to deliver air from said chamber to the zone of the building, and induction means operative to induce a flow of air into said chamber through said second inlet thereof for mixture therein with primary conditioned air and delivery therewith through said outlet to the building zone, whereby the energy required to power said means effective to vary the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber is provided by primary conditioned air.
- 3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a heat exchanger positioned to transfer heat to the air being delivered through said outlet.
- 4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 3 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 further comprising a thermostatic control for said fluidic valve, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 8. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5 wherein said mixing chamber has a third air inlet and said induction means is operative to induce a flow of air therethrough and into said chamber and further comprising means including a second air bag actuator effective to vary the rate at which air is induced to flow through said second and third air inlets, a second fluidic valve having first and second discharge legs and operably connected to receive air circulated in the apparatus, and means for conducting air between the first discharge leg of said second fluidic valve and said second air bag actuator.
- 9. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6 wherein said mixing chamber has a third air inlet and said induction means is operative to induce a flow of air therethrough and into said chamber and further comprising means including a second air bag actuator effective to vary the rate at which air is induced to flow through said second and third air inlets, a second fluidic valve having first and second discharge legs and operably connected to receive primary conditioned air and means for conducting air between the first discharge leg of said second fluidic valve and said second air bag actuator.
- 10. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 11. Apparatus as claimed in claims 8, 9 or 10 further comprising a thermostatic control for one of said fluidic valves, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 12. Apparatus as claimed in claim 11 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 13. Apparatus as claimed in claim 11 further comprising a second thermostatic control for the other of said fluidic valves, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 14. Apparatus as claimed in claim 13 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 15. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein said mixing chamber has a third air inlet and said induction means is operative to induce a flow of air therethrough and into said chamber, and further comprising means including a second air bag actuator and means including a third air bag actuator and effective to vary the rate at which air is induced to flow through said second and third air inlets, respectively, a second fluidic valve having first and second discharge legs and operably connected to receive air circulated in the apparatus, means for conducting air between the first discharge leg of said second fluidic valve and said second air bag actuator, and means for conducting air between the second discharge leg of said second fluidic valve and said third air bag actuator.
- 16. Apparatus for delivering air for air conditioning a zone of a building, said apparatus comprising, in combination, a mixing chamber having a first, a second, and a third air inlet, means for delivering primary, conditioned air through said first inlet to said chamber, an outlet operatively connected to deliver air from said chamber to the zone of the building, induction means including a blower and operative to induce a flow of air into said chamber through said second and third inlets thereof for mixture therein with primary conditioned air and delivery therewith through said outlet to the building zone, means including an air bag actuator and effective to vary both the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber between a maximum and a predetermined lesser rate, and the rate at which air is induced to flow through one of said second and third inlets into said chamber, a fluidic valve having first and second discharge legs and operably connected to receive air circulated in the apparatus, and means for conducting air between the first discharge leg of said fluidic valve and said air bag actuator, whereby the energy required to power said means effective to vary both the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber and the rate at which air flows through one of said second and third inlets into said chamber is provided by air circulated in the apparatus.
- 17. Apparatus as claimed in claim 16 wherein said means effective to vary both the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber and the rate at which air flows through one of said second and third inlets into said chamber further includes a second air bag actuator.
- 18. Apparatus as claimed in claim 15 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 19. Apparatus as claimed in claim 16 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 20. Apparatus as claimed in claim 17 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 21. Apparatus as claimed in claim 15 further comprising a thermostatic control for said fluidic valve, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 22. Apparatus as claimed in claims 16 or 19 further comprising a thermostatic control for said fluidic valve, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 23. Apparatus as claimed in claims 17, 18, or 20 further comprising a thermostatic control for said fluidic valve, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 24. Apparatus as claimed in claim 21, further comprising a second thermostatic control for said second fluidic valve which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 25. Apparatus as claimed in claim 24 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 26. Apparatus as claimed in claim 24 further comprising means including a slide valve movable between a first and a second position and operatively associated with said second thermostatic control, said means being operable in said first position and inoperable in said second position to render said second thermostatic control inoperable, and means for moving said slide valve between said first and second positions.
- 27. Apparatus as claimed in claim 26 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 28. Apparatus as claimed in claims 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 15, 18, 21, or 26 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 29. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2 further comprising a heat exchanger positioned to transfer heat to the air being delivered through said outlet.
- 30. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 31. Apparatus as claimed in claim 29 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 32. Apparatus as claimed in claims 29, 30 or 31 further comprising a thermostatic control for said fluidic valve, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 33. Apparatus as claimed in claim 32 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 34. Apparatus as claimed in claim 9 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 35. Apparatus as claimed in claim 34 further comprising a thermostatic control for one of said fluidic valves, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 36. Apparatus as claimed in claim 35 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 37. Apparatus as claimed in claim 35 further comprising a second thermostatic control for the other of said fluidic valves, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 38. Apparatus as claimed in claim 37 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 39. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2 wherein said mixing chamber has a third air inlet and said induction means is operative to induce a flow of air therethrough and into said chamber, and further comprising means including a second air bag actuator and means including a third air bag actuator and effective to vary the rate at which air is induced to flow through said second and third air inlets, respectively, a second fluidic valve having first and second discharge legs and operably connected to receive air circulated in the apparatus, means for conducting air between the first discharge leg of said second fluidic valve and said second air bag actuator, and means for conducting air between the second discharge leg of said second fluidic valve and said third air bag actuator.
- 40. Apparatus as claimed in claim 16 wherein said fluidic valve is operably connected to receive primary conditioned air, whereby the energy required to power said means effective to vary the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber is provided by primary conditioned air.
- 41. Apparatus as claimed in claim 40 wherein said means effective to vary both the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber and the rate at which air flows through one of said second and third inlets into said chamber further includes a second air bag actuator.
- 42. Apparatus as claimed in claim 2 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 43. Apparatus as claimed in claim 40 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 44. Apparatus as claimed in claim 41 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 45. Apparatus as claimed in claim 39 further comprising a thermostatic control for said fluidic valve, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 46. Apparatus as claimed in claim 40 or 43 further comprising a thermostatic control for said fluidic valve, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 47. Apparatus as claimed in claims 41, 42 or 44 further comprising a thermostatic control for said fluidic valve, which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 48. Apparatus as claimed in claim 45, further comprising a second thermostatic control for said second fluidic valve which control is responsive to zone temperature conditions.
- 49. Apparatus as claimed in claim 48 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 50. Apparatus as claimed in claim 48 further comprising means including a slide valve movable between a first and a second position and operatively associated with said second thermostatic control, said means being operable in said first position and inoperable in said second position to render said second thermostatic control inoperable, and means for moving said slide valve between said first and second positions.
- 51. Apparatus as claimed in claim 50 further comprising an air bar assembly and means for delivering air from said outlet to said air bar assembly.
- 52. Apparatus as claimed in claims 29, 30, 31, 34, 39, 42, 45 or 50 wherein said induction means comprising a blower.
- 53. Apparatus for delivering air for air conditioning a zone of a building, said apparatus comprising, in combination, a mixing chamber having a first and a second air inlet, means for delivering primary, conditioned air through said first inlet to said chamber, means effective to vary the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber between a maximum and a predetermined lesser rate, an outlet operatively connected to deliver air from said chamber to the zone of the building, induction means operative to induce a flow of air into said chamber through said second inlet thereof for mixture therein with primary conditioned air and delivery therewith through said outlet to the building zone, a coil positioned for heat transfer with air flowing through the apparatus, means including a heat pump operatively connected for heat transfer with said coil, a temperature sensor operable to generate a signal reflective of the air conditioning load on the zone, and means responsive to the signal from said temperature sensor, said apparatus being operable
- (1) when the signal indicates an air conditioning load from a maximum to an intermediate load, to cause said heat pump to transfer heat from said coil at a rate which varies as a direct function of the air conditioning load, and to maintain the rate at which primary, conditioned air is delivered to the space at the maximum,
- (2) when the signal indicates an air conditioning load from an intermediate to a predetermined lesser load, to vary the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber as a direct function of the air conditioning load between the maximum and a predetermined lesser rate and to prevent heat transfer between said heat pump and said coil, and
- (3) when the signal indicates an air conditioning load from the predetermined lesser load to a minimum load, to maintain the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber at the predetermined lesser rate and to cause said heat pump to transfer heat to said coil at a rate which varies as an inverse function of the air conditioning load.
- 54. Apparatus for delivering air for air conditioning a zone of a building, said apparatus comprising, in combination, a mixing chamber having a first, a second, and a third air inlet, means for delivering primary, conditioned air at a given temperature through said first inlet to said chamber, means for delivering primary, conditioned air at a temperature higher than the given temperature through said second inlet to said chamber, an outlet operatively connected to deliver air from said chamber to the zone of the building, induction means including a blower and operative to induce a flow of air into said chamber through said third inlet thereof for mixture therein with primary conditioned air and delivery therewith through said outlet to the building zone, and means effective to vary the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber through each of said first and second inlets
- (1) to prevent the flow of primary air through said second inlet while causing a flow of primary air through said first inlet at a rate which varies between a maximum and a predetermined lesser rate as the air conditioning load on the zone varies between a maximum and a predetermined lesser load, and
- (2) to prevent the flow of primary air through said first inlet while causing a flow of primary air through said second inlet at a rate which varies as a direct function of load when the air conditioning load on the zone is below the predetermined lesser load.
- 55. Apparatus for delivering air for air conditioning a zone of a building, said apparatus comprising, in combination, a mixing chamber having a first and a second air inlet, means for delivering primary, conditioned air through said first inlet to said chamber, means effective to vary the rate at which primary conditioned air is delivered to said chamber between a maximum and a predetermined lesser rate, said last-named means comprising a valve and an air bag actuator therefor, a fluidic valve having first and second discharge legs and operably connected to receive air circulated in the apparatus, and means for conducting air between the first discharge leg of said fluidic valve and said air bag actuator, an outlet operatively connected to deliver air from said chamber to the zone of the building, induction means operative to induce a flow of air into said chamber through the said second inlet thereof for mixture therein with primary conditioned air and delivery therewith through said outlet to the building zone, a coil positioned for heat transfer with air flowing through the apparatus, and means including a heat pump operatively connected for heat transfer with said first coil.
- 56. Apparatus as claimed in claim 55 which additionally includes a control operable in a first position to cause said heat pump to transfer heat to said coil and operable in a second position to cause said heat pump to transfer heat from said coil.
- 57. Apparatus as claimed in claim 56 further comprising a temperature sensor operable to generate a signal reflective of the air conditioning load on the zone wherein the position of said control is dependent on the signal generated by said temperature sensor.
- 58. Apparatus as claimed in claim 55, 56 or 57 which additionally includes means for receiving water from the building and delivering the water to said heat pump for heat transfer therewith.
- 59. Apparatus as claimed in claim 55 which additionally includes a second coil positioned for heat transfer with air flowing through the apparatus and a second heat pump which is of a higher capacity than said heat pump and is operatively connected for heat transfer with said second coil.
- 60. Apparatus as claimed in claim 59 which additionally includes a control which is operable in a first position to cause said heat pump to transfer heat from said coil, operable in a second position to cause said second heat pump to transfer heat from said second coil, operable in a third position to cause said heat pump to transfer heat to said coil and operable in a fourth position to cause said second heat pump to transfer heat to said second coil.
- 61. Apparatus as claimed in claim 60 further comprising a temperature sensor operable to generate a signal reflective of the air conditioning load on the zone wherein the position of said control is dependent on the signal generated by said temperature sensor.
- 62. Apparatus as claimed in claim 59, 60 or 61 which additionally includes means for receiving water from the building and delivering the water to said heat pump and said second heat pump for heat transfer therewith.
- 63. Apparatus as claimed in claim 55, 56, 57, 59, 60 or 61 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 64. Apparatus as claimed in claim 58 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
- 65. Apparatus as claimed in claim 62 wherein said induction means comprises a blower.
