Claims
- 1. A method for making an ink having substantially no mutagenic leachates, comprising exposing a composition comprising pigment and a photopolymerizable compound having at least one ethylenically unsaturated double bond to radiation in the presence of a substantially non-mutagenic photoinitiator having photoinitiation activity similar to that exhibited by 4,4′-bis(dimethylamino)benzophenone under similar conditions, said photoinitiator having the formula
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein each A is independently lower alkyl.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein two As are methyl and two As are ethyl.
- 4. The method of claim 2, wherein three As are methyl and one A is ethyl.
- 5. The method of claim 2, wherein three As are ethyl and one A is methyl.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the photoinitiator is selected from the group consisting of 4,4′-bis(methylethylamino)benzophenone, 4-(dimethylamino)-4′-(methylethylamino)benzophenone, 4-(diethylamino)-4′-(methylethylamino)benzophenone, 4,4′-bis(methylethanolamino) benzophenone, 4,4′-bis(methylmethylacrylateamino) benzophenone, 4,4′-bis(maleimideamino) benzophenone, and 4-(methylethylamino)-4′-(aliphatic maleimideamino) benzophenone having the formula
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein each R is hydrogen.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the photopolymerizable compound comprises an acrylate.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the photopolymerizable compound is the majority component of the composition.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein the photopolymerizable compound is selected from the group consisting of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, n-butylacrylate, tert-butylacrylate, isooctyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethylmethacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, butylacrylate, isobutyl methacrylate, corresponding hydroxy acrylates, glycol acrylates, allyl acrylates, epoxy acrylates, aminoplast acrylates, vinyl acetate, vinyl halides, vinylidene halides, vinyl amides, vinylidene amides, butadiene, styrene, and vinyl toluene.
- 11. The method of claim 1, wherein the photopolymerizable compound is present in an amount of from about 90.0 percent by weight to about 99.8 percent by weight in the composition.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the photopolymerizable compound is present in an amount of from about 95.0 percent by weight to about 99.5 percent by weight in the composition.
- 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the photoinitiator is present in an amount of from about 0.2 to about 10 parts by weight of the composition.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein the photoinitiator is present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 5 parts by weight.
- 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the pigment is selected from the group consisting of zinc oxide, titania, basic lead sulfate, magnesium silicate, silica, clays, wollastonite, talcs, mica, chromates, iron pigments, wood fluor, microballons, hard polymer particles, glass fiber and glass flake.
- 16. The method of claim 1, wherein the pigment is present in an amount of from about 1 to about 40 percent by weight in the composition.
- 17. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition further comprises at least one component selected from the group consisting of polymerization inhibitors, fillers, ultraviolet absorbers and organic peroxides.
- 18. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition further comprises a coinitiator.
- 19. The method of claim 18, wherein the coinitiator is selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine, methyl-diethanolamine, ethyldiethanolamine and esters of dimethylamino benzoic acid.
- 20. The method of claim 18, wherein the coinitiator is present in an amount of from about 0.2 to about 25 percent by weight of the composition.
- 21. The method of claim 1, wherein said exposing step comprises exposing the composition to radiation having a wavelength of about 250 to about 350 nanometers (nm).
- 22. The method of claim 1, wherein said exposing step comprises exposing the composition to radiation having a wavelength of about 290 to about 325 nm.
- 23. The method of claim 1, wherein said exposing step comprises exposing the composition to radiation having a wavelength of about 308 nm.
- 24. A method for making an ink having substantially no mutagenic leachates and substantially free of epoxy resin, comprising exposing a composition comprising pigment and a photopolymerizable acrylate compound having at least one ethylenically unsaturated double bond to radiation in the presence of a substantially non-mutagenic photoinitiator having photoinitiation activity similar to that exhibited by 4,4′-bis(dimethylamino)benzophenone under similar conditions, said photoinitiator selected from the group consisting of 4,4′-bis(methylethylamino)benzophenone, 4-(dimethylamino)-4′-(methylethylamino)benzophenone, 4-(diethylamino)-4′-(methylethylamino)benzophenone, 4,4′-bis(methylethanolamino) benzophenone, 4,4′-bis(methylmethylacrylateamino) benzophenone, 4,4′-bis(maleimideamino) benzophenone, and 4-(methylethylamino)-4′-(aliphatic maleimideamino) benzophenone having the formula
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the photoinitiator is 4,4′-bis(methylethylamino)benzophenone.
- 26. The method of claim 24, wherein the photopolymerizable acrylate compound is selected from the group consisting of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, n-butylacrylate, tert-butylacrylate, isooctyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethylmethacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, butylacrylate, isobutyl methacrylate, corresponding hydroxy acrylates, glycol acrylates, allyl acrylates, epoxy acrylates and aminoplast acrylates.
- 27. The method of claim 24, wherein the photopolymerizable compound is present in an amount of from about 90.0 percent by weight to about 99.8 percent by weight in the composition.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein the photopolymerizable compound is present in an amount of from about 95.0 percent by weight to about 99.5 percent by weight in the composition.
- 29. The method of claim 24, wherein the photoinitiator is present in an amount of from about 0.2 to about 10 parts by weight of the composition.
- 30. The method of claim 29, wherein the photoinitiator is present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 5 parts by weight.
- 31. The method of claim 24, wherein the pigment is selected from the group consisting of zinc oxide, titania, basic lead sulfate, magnesium silicate, silica, clays, wollastonite, talcs, mica, chromates, iron pigments, wood fluor, microballons, hard polymer particles, glass fiber and glass flake.
- 32. The method of claim 24, wherein the pigment is present in an amount of from about 1 to about 40 percent by weight in the composition.
- 33. The method of claim 24, wherein the composition further comprises at least one component selected from the group consisting of polymerization inhibitors, fillers, ultraviolet absorbers and organic peroxides.
- 34. The method of claim 24, wherein the composition further comprises a coinitiator.
- 35. The method of claim 34, wherein the coinitiator is selected from the group consisting of triethanolamine, methyl-diethanolamine, ethyldiethanolamine and esters of dimethylamino benzoic acid.
- 36. The method of claim 34, wherein the coinitiator is present in an amount of from about 0.2 to about 25 percent by weight of the composition.
- 37. The method of claim 24, wherein said exposing step comprises exposing the composition to radiation having a wavelength of about 250 to about 350 nanometers (nm).
- 38. The method of claim 24, wherein said exposing step comprises exposing the composition to radiation having a wavelength of about 290 to about 325 nm.
- 39. The method of claim 24, wherein said exposing step comprises exposing the composition to radiation having a wavelength of about 308 nm.
