Claims
- 1. An apparatus for cutting a plate-shaped brittle material into two plate pieces, the plate-shaped material including a surface having a cut groove, the apparatus comprising:
- a press table having a flat surface for supporting the plate-shaped brittle material such that the plate-shaped brittle material does not bend;
- a jig having a thread-shaped projection secured thereto with a constant height as measured in a direction perpendicular to the flat surface of the press table, said thread-shaped projection extending in conformity with a predetermined pattern positionally coincident with the cut groove formed on the surface of the plate-shaped brittle material; and
- an elastic member interposed between said jig and the press table and contacting the thread-shaped projection during cutting of the plate-shaped material, the elastic member and the press table defining a space therebetween for receiving the plate-shaped material,
- whereby movement of said jig toward said press table applies a compressing force to the plate-shaped brittle material at a right angle relative to the plate-shaped brittle material, the compressing force generating first tensile stresses, said first tensile stresses generating second tensile stresses in said plate-shaped brittle material by friction between said elastic member and the plate-shaped brittle material, said second tensile stresses fracturing the plate-shaped brittle material in conformity with said predetermined pattern.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said thread-shaped projection secured to each of said jig is formed by allowing said thread-shaped projection to continuously extend in conformity with said predetermined pattern.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein an elastic modulus of said elastic member is set to be smaller than that of said plate-shaped brittle material to be cut into two plate pieces.
- 4. An apparatus for cutting a plate-shaped brittle material into two plate pieces comprising:
- first and second jigs having surfaces facing each other, each jig having a thread-shaped projection secured to the surface with a constant height as measured from the surface of the other jig, said thread-shaped projection extending in conformity with a predetermined pattern; and
- first and second elastic members interposed between said jigs, the first elastic member contacting the thread-shaped projection of the first jig and the second elastic member contacting the thread-shaped projection of the second jig during cutting of the plate-shaped material, the first and second elastic members defining a space therebetween for receiving the plate-shaped material.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said thread-shaped projection secured to each of said jigs is formed by allowing said thread-shaped projection to continuously extend in conformity with said predetermined pattern.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 4, wherein an elastic modulus of each of said elastic member is set to be smaller than that of said plate-shaped brittle member to be cut into two plate pieces.
