Claims
- 1. An electro-mechanical sensor system for sensing the presence and absence of yarn, the electro-mechanical sensing system comprising:at least one electro-mechanical yarn detector including a yarn contacting portion thereof positioned to abuttingly contract yarn being transported on a conveyor when being conveyed thereon a switch which activates when the yarn contacting portion is in a first yarn contacting position when contacting strands of yarn and when the yarn contacting portion is in a second yarn contacting position when not contacting strands of yarn, a rod member overlying the conveyor and connected to the yarn contacting portion, and a cam member connected to said rod member and positioned to abuttingly contact said switch for activation thereof; and a controller connected to said switch for controlling the speed of take-up of the yarn responsive to the activation of said switch so that yarn take up speed increases when yarn is present and yarn take up speed decreases when yarn is absent.
- 2. A yarn sensor as defined in claim 1, wherein the at least one electro-mechanical yarn detector comprises a first electro-mechanical yarn detector, wherein the switch comprises a first switch, and said yarn sensor system further comprising a second electro-mechanical yarn detector including a second switch, the second switch also being connected to said controller so that said controller further controls the speed of yarn being fed responsive to the activation of said second switch.
- 3. A yarn sensor system as defined in claim 1, wherein the yarn contacting portion has an arcuate shape to enhance contact control of the electro-mechanical detector with the yarn.
- 4. A method of sensing the presence and absence of yarn traveling on a conveyor, the method comprising the steps of:providing a yarn contacting portion thereof positioned to abuttingly contact yarn being transported on a conveyor when being conveyed thereon; activating a switch when the yarn contacting portion is in a first yarn contacting position when contacting strands of yarn; controlling the speed of yarn being transported on the conveyor responsive to the activation of the switch; abuttingly contacting the switch with a cam member connected to a rod member overlying the conveyor, the yarn contacting portion being connected to the rod member; and controlling the speed of take-up of the yarn responsive to the activation of the switch so that the yarn take-up speed increases when yarn is present and yarn take-up speed decreases when yarn is absent.
- 5. A method as defined in claim 4, wherein the yarn contacting portion has an arcuate shape to enhance contact control with the yarn.
- 6. An electro-mechanical sensor system for sensing the presence and absence of yarn, the electro-mechanical sensing system comprising:at least one electro-mechanical yarn detector including a yarn contacting portion thereof positioned to abuttingly contact yarn being transported on a conveyor when being conveyed thereon, a conveyor mounting member connected to and overlying the conveyor, a rod member having a pre-selected length, connected to the conveyor mounting member, and slidably connected to the yarn contacting portion so that the yarn contacting position adjustably slides along the pre-selected length of the rod member to a pre-selected position, and a switch which activates when the yarn contacting portion is in a first yarn contacting position when contacting strands of yarn and when the yarn contacting position is in a second yarn contacting position when not contacting strands of yarn; and a controller connected to said switch for controlling the speed of take-up of the yarn responsive to the activation of said switch so that yarn take-up speed increases when yarn is present and yarn take-up speed decreases when yarn is absent.
- 7. A yarn sensor system as defined in claim 6, wherein said at least one electro-mechanical detector further includes a cam member connected to said rod member and positioned to contact said switch for activation thereof.
- 8. A yarn sensor system as defined in claim 7, wherein the at least one electro-mechanical yarn detector comprises a first electro-mechanical yarn detector, wherein the switch comprises a first switch, and said yarn sensor system further comprising a second electro-mechanical yarn detector including a second switch, the second switch also being connected to said controller so that said controller further controls the speed of yarn being fed responsive to the activation of said second switch.
- 9. A yarn sensor system as defined in claim 6, wherein the yarn contacting portion has an arcuate shape to enhance contact control of the electro-mechanical detector with the yarn.
