Claims
- 1. A structure adapted to support a load comprising:
- a plurality of links, each of said links having a body extending along a central axis between axial ends, a central aperture extending through said links between said ends, a male ball at a first axial end of said body, a female socket at the second axial end of said body, said female socket having an inner surface corresponding to an outer surface of said male ball;
- said male balls being received within a female socket of an adjacent link, each said male ball being more resistant to radially inward deformation than said female socket; and
- a clamp tightened radially inwardly and having portions moving radially inwardly on the outer surface of said female socket and deforming said female socket radially inwardly against said more resistant male ball fixing said adjacent links, said more resistant male ball providing a strong base to allow said structure to carry heavier loads.
- 2. A structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said male ball has a wall thickness between said outer peripheral surface and said central aperture which is greater than the wall thickness of each said female socket between said inner peripheral surface and an outer peripheral surface of said female socket.
- 3. A structure as recited in claim 2, wherein said female socket having an extension portion extending into an aperture portion formed in said male ball, said extension portion also having a thinner wall thickness than said male ball, and a recess formed in said male ball, said extension having a bead extending radially outwardly from the remainder of said extension portion into said recess to secure said socket to said male ball.
- 4. A structure as recited in claim 3, wherein said male ball includes a central aperture portion defined by two stepped portions, a first stepped portion having a greater inner diameter than a second stepped portion, and said extension portion extending into said first portion, but not into said second portion.
- 5. A structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said clamp is disposed on said adjacent links, said clamp contacting both a portion of said female socket and a portion of said outer surface of said male ball, said clamp having an inner peripheral surface with a first section extending radially inwardly from a second section, a ledge portion extending generally perpendicular between said first and second clamp sections, said ledge portion abutting an axially outermost edge of said socket.
- 6. A structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said clamp includes two half-cylindrical sections which are tightened together to engage said clamp, and secure said adjacent links.
- 7. A structure as recited in claim 1, wherein said clamp is formed of a band which is tightened by a bolt to secure said adjacent links.
- 8. A structure adapted to support a load comprising:
- a plurality of links, each of said links having a body extending along a central axis between axial ends, a central aperture extending through said links between said ends, a male ball at a first axial end of said body, a female locking portion at the second axial end of said body, said female locking portion having an inner surface corresponding to an outer surface of said male ball;
- said male balls being received within a female locking portion of an adjacent link, each said male ball being more resistant to radially inward deformation than said female locking portion;
- said female locking portion including a clamp tightened to have surfaces moving radially inwardly to lock said female locking portion on said male ball fixing said adjacent links, said more resistant male ball providing a strong base to allow the plural links to carry heavier loads; and
- wherein said male ball being formed of a material that is harder than said female locking portion, and said ball being formed with serrations such that when said female locking portion is tightened radially inwardly, said serrations and said harder material of said male ball providing a strong base to result in a secure connection.
- 9. A structure as recited in claim 8, wherein said female locking portion also includes a socket attached to said male ball on one of said links and received between said clamp and said male ball on said adjacent link.
- 10. A structure comprising:
- a mount structure mounted to a base;
- a tool mounted at a location remote from said base;
- at least two links connecting said tool to said base, a first of said links being mounted in said mount structure and extending toward said tool, a second of said links being connected to said first link and extending further toward said tool; and
- said first and second links being connected by a ball and female locking portion structure, with a ball formed on one of said links and a female locking structure formed on the other, said ball being formed of a hardened material and having serrations on its outer periphery, said female locking structure including a clamp tightened to have surfaces moving radially inwardly to lock said female locking structure on said male ball, fixing said first and second links, said hardened ball providing a strong base to allow said links to carry a relatively heavy load.
- 11. A structure as recited in claim 10 wherein said female locking structure also includes a socket received between said clamp and said ball.
- 12. A structure as recited in claim 11, wherein each of said first and second links includes a ball at one end and a female locking structure including a clamp and socket at a second end.
- 13. A structure as recited in claim 10, wherein each of said links includes a ball at one end and a female locking structure at a second end.
- 14. A structure as recited in claim 10, wherein said tool is a gripper.
