Claims
- 1. A crosslinkable composition comprising
- (a) a polymer selected from the group consisting of poly(mide), poly(aryl ether ketone), poly(aryl ether sulfone), poly(quinoline), poly(quinoxaline), and nonaromatic fluoropolymer having aliphatic C-H groups and
- (b) a bistriazene compound of the formula ##STR30## wherein --R.sub.1, --R.sub.2, --R.sub.3, and --R.sub.4 are independently --H, --C.sub.6 H.sub.5, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 Y, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; --R.sub.5 -- is --O--, --SO.sub.2 --, ##STR31## --R.sub.6 is --F, --Cl, --Br, --CH.sub.3, or --CF.sub.3 ; r is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4; and --Y is halogen, --NO.sub.2, --C.sub.6 H.sub.5, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; the bistriazene compound being present in an amount sufficient to crosslink the polymer.
- 2. A crosslinkable composition according to claim 1, wherein in the bistriazene compound --R.sub.5 -- is ##STR32##
- 3. A crosslinkable composition according to claim 1, wherein in the bistriazene compound each of --R.sub.1, --R.sub.2, --R.sub.3 and --R.sub.4 is methyl and r is 0.
- 4. A crosslinkable composition according to claim 1, wherein the bistriazene compound has the formula ##STR33##
- 5. A crosslinkable composition according to claim 1 or 4, wherein polymer (a) is a poly(imide) comprising a repeat unit selected from the group consisting of ##STR34##
- 6. A crosslinkable composition according to claim 1 or 4, wherein polymer (a) is a poly(aryl ether ketone) selected from the group consisting of ##STR35##
- 7. A crosslinkable composition according to claim 1 or 4, wherein polymer (a) is a poly(aryl ether sulfone) selected from the group consisting of ##STR36##
- 8. A crosslinkable composition according to claim 1 or 4, wherein polymer (a) is a poly(quinoline) having a repeat unit ##STR37## wherein --L.sub.1 -- is a direct bond or --O-- and --L.sub.2 -- is --C.sub.6 H.sub.5, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, or a fluorinated divalent moiety.
- 9. A crosslinkable composition according to claim 1 or 4, wherein polymer (a) is poly(quinoxaline) having a repeat unit ##STR38## where --K.sub.1 is --H or --C.sub.6 H.sub.5 ; --K.sub.2 -- is a direct bond, --O--, --S--, --SO.sub.2 --, --CO--, or --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --; and --K.sub.3 is --C.sub.6 H.sub.5, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, or --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 C(CF.sub.3).sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --.
- 10. A crosslinkable composition according to claim 1 or 4, wherein polymer (a) is a nonaromatic fluoropolymer having aliphatic C-H groups selected from the group consisting of poly(vinylidene fluoride), ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, poly(vinyl fluoride) tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoroisobutylene copolymer, vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene copolymer, vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, vinylidene fluoride-tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether) copolymer, and tetrafluoroethylene-propylene copolymer.
- 11. A method of crosslinking a polymer, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a polymer selected from the group consisting of poly(imide), poly(aryl ether ketone), poly(aryl ether sulfone), poly(quinoline), poly(quinoxaline), and nonaromatic fluoropolymer having aliphatic C-H groups;
- (b) forming a composition comprising the polymer and a bistriazene compound of the formula ##STR39## wherein --R.sub.1, --R.sub.2, --R.sub.3, and --R.sub.4 are independently --H, --C.sub.6 H.sub.5, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 Y, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; --R.sub.5 -- is --O--, --SO.sub.2 --, ##STR40## --R.sub.6 is --F, --Cl, --Br, --CH.sub.3, or --CF.sub.3 ; r is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4; and --Y is halogen, --NO.sub.2, --C.sub.6 H.sub.5, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl; the bistriazene compound being present in an amount effective to crosslink the polymer; and
- (c) heating the composition to a temperature between about 300.degree. and about 450.degree. C. to crosslink the polymer.
- 12. A method according to claim 11, wherein in the bistriazene compound --R.sub.5 -- is ##STR41##
- 13. A method according to claim 11, wherein in the bistriazene compound each of --R.sub.1, --R.sub.2, --R.sub.3 and --R.sub.4 is methyl and r is 0.
- 14. A method according to claim 11, wherein the bistriazene compound has the formula ##STR42##
- 15. A method according to claim 11 or 14, wherein polymer (a) is a poly(imide) comprising a repeat unit selected from the group consisting of ##STR43##
- 16. A method according to claim 11 or 14, wherein polymer (a) is a poly(aryl ether ketone) selected from the group consisting of ##STR44##
- 17. A method according to claim 11 or 14, wherein polymer (a) is a poly(aryl ether sulfone) selected from the group consisting of ##STR45##
- 18. A method according to claim 11 or 14, wherein polymer (a) is a poly(quinoline) having a repeat unit ##STR46## wherein --L.sub.1 -- is a direct bond or --O-- and --L.sub.2 -- is --C.sub.6 H.sub.5, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, or a fluorinated divalent moiety.
- 19. A method according to claim 11 or 14, wherein polymer (a) is a poly(quinoxaline) having a repeat unit ##STR47## where --K.sub.1 is --H or --C.sub.6 H.sub.5 ; --K.sub.2 -- is a direct bond, --O--, --S--, --SO.sub.2 --, --CO--, or --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --; and --K.sub.3 is --C.sub.6 H.sub.5, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 OC.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 SO.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --, or --C.sub.6 H.sub.4 C(CF.sub.3).sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --.
- 20. A method according to claim 11 or 14, wherein polymer (a) is a nonaromatic fluoropolymer having aliphatic C-H groups selected from the group consisting of poly(vinylidene fluoride), ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, poly(vinyl fluoride) tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoroisobutylene copolymer, vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene copolymer, vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, vinylidene fluoride-tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoro(methyl vinyl ether) copolymer, and tetrafluoroethylene-propylene copolymer.
