Claims
- 1. A method of making a recording head for use with magnetic recording media, said method comprising the steps of:
providing a substrate, a read element, and a pair of shields on opposing sides of said read element; depositing material forming a coil and inorganic insulation surrounding said coil on one of said pair of shields; creating a surface for deposition of a main pole; and depositing a main pole on said insulation.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of depositing material forming a coil and inorganic insulation surrounding said coil on one of said pair of shields further comprises the steps of:
depositing inorganic material forming a write gap; applying photoresist defining a location of a coil; depositing material forming said coil; depositing inorganic material forming a shield above said coil; and removing said photoresist.
- 3. The method according to claim 2, further comprising the step of removing said photoresist defining the location of said coil, and depositing photoresist defining a location of said inorganic material forming a shield, between the steps of depositing material forming said coil and depositing inorganic material forming a shield above said coil.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of depositing material forming a coil and inorganic insulation surrounding said coil on one of said pair of shields further comprises the steps of:
depositing material forming a lower layer of inorganic insulation; depositing material forming said coil; depositing material forming an upper layer of inorganic insulation; depositing photoresist over a portion of said coil and inorganic insulation, defining excess material forming said coil and said insulation surrounding said photoresist; removing said excess material; removing said photoresist; and depositing material forming an inorganic write gap.
- 5. The method according to claim 4, wherein said step of removing said excess material is performed by ion milling.
- 6. The method according to claim 5, wherein said milling is performed at an angle selected to produce a tapered coil and insulation assembly.
