Claims
- 1. A method for producing colored patterns or images including the steps of
- (1) forming a polymer layer containing a dissolved pigment precursor component (a), a polymer or a natural or synthetic resin material (b') and optionally a catalyst for pigment formation (c), and
- (2) locally regenerating the pigment from the above soluble precursor by chemical, photolytical or thermal means, or by laser or other sources of irradiation,
- wherein said pigment precursor (a) is represented by formula
- A(B)x (I),
- wherein
- x is a number from 1 to 4,
- A is the residue of a colorant of the quinacridone-, anthraquinone-, perylene-, quinophthalone-, isoindolinone-, isoindoline-, dioxazine-, or azo series, which is linked to x groups B via N atoms, which nitrogens are part of A,
- B is represented by formulae ##STR81## and wherein in formulae II, III and IV m, n and p are each independently of the other 0 or 1,
- X is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylene or C.sub.2 -C.sub.8 -alkenylene,
- Y is a group --T--(CH.sub.2).sub.q --,
- Z is a group --T--(CH.sub.2).sub.r --,
- T is C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkylene,
- q is a number between 1 and 6,
- r is a number between 0 and 6,
- R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently of the other hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, halogen, CN, NO.sub.2, phenyl or phenoxy which are unsubstituted or substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or halogen,
- Q is hydrogen, CN, Si(R.sub.1).sub.3, a group C(R.sub.5)(R.sub.6)(R.sub.7), wherein R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are each independently of the other hydrogen or halogen and at least one of the residues R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 is halogen,
- a group ##STR82## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 have the same meaning as given above,
- a group SO.sub.2 R.sub.8 or SR.sub.8, wherein R.sub.8 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl,
- a group CH(R.sub.9).sub.2, wherein R.sub.2 is phenyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or halogen, or
- a group of formula ##STR83## and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are each independently of the other hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 -alkyl or a group ##STR84## wherein X, Y, R.sub.1, R.sub.2, m and n have the above given meaning, or R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 together with the nitrogen, on which they are bound, form a pyrrolidinyl-, piperidinyl- or morpholinyl residue, and wherein A(B).sub.x may contain additional ##STR85## .dbd.N--, --NH-- or --NH.sub.2 groups.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein component (b') is polystyrene, poly(vinyl alcohol), polyester, poly(vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate), polycarbonate or a mixture thereof.
- 3. A method according to claim 1, wherein said step (1) is carried out by
- (1a) forming a polymer layer containing a polymer or a natural or synthetic resin material (b') and optionally a catalyst (c), then
- (1b) ink-jetting an ink comprising a pigment precursor (a) onto the polymer layer in selected target areas.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, wherein said step (1) is carried out by
- (1a) forming a polymer layer containing a polymer or a natural or synthetic resin material (b') and optionally a catalyst (c), then
- (1b) superposing a donor layer comprising a pigment precursor (a) and a polymer or a natural or synthetic resin material (b') onto the polymer layer,
- (1c) locally heating the donor layer to transfer the pigment precursor in selected target areas, and
- (1d) removing the donor layer from the receiver layer.
- 5. A method according to claim 4, wherein said nitrogens being part of A are adjacent to or conjugated with a carbonyl group.
- 6. A method according to claim 4, wherein the polymer layer formed in step (1) contains a latent acid or base as said catalyst (c).
- 7. A method according to claim 4, wherein the polymer layer formed in step (1) contains a sulphonium salt as said catalyst (c).
- 8. A method according to claim 1, wherein said nitrogens being part of A are adjacent to or conjugated with a carbonyl group.
- 9. A method according to claim 1, wherein the polymer layer formed in step (1) contains a latent acid or base as said catalyst (c).
- 10. A method according to claim 1, wherein the polymer layer formed in step (1) contains a sulphonium salt as said catalyst (c).
